Valerian Ruminskl, a 33-year-old Buffalo native based in New York City, won the $20,000 first-place award in the professional division of the nationally known, Indianapolis-based competition for young professional and student opera singers. Singing repertoire seldom heard at mainstream American opera houses, Ruminski performed arias from 19th-century French composer Anibroise Thomas' be Caid and The Tempest, an English baroque work that has been attributed to Henry Purcell.

Ruminski, who is set to sing roles at the Metropolitan and New York City opera companies next season, emerged from among dozens of young professional singers being judged in Indianapolis. Counting student singers as well, there were about 200 young opera performers in the city for the MacAllister Awards. Before the top winners had been announced from among 10 finalists, one of the judges, Gail Robinson of the University of Kentucky voice faculty and formerly executive director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council competition, told The Indianapolis Star that she thought this year's finalists were quite competitive as a whole. "I think these singers represent a cross section of the best Ameri can young singers," she said. "In the eight or nine years I've been coming, this competition has grown." The $7,500 second prize went to Stephanie Novacek, a mezzo-soprano based in Minneapolis.

She sang Charlotte's Letter Aria from Werther and Mon Coeur S'Ouvre A Ta Voix from Samson et Delila. Those performances brought the mezzo up a notch in the MacAllister Awards. The mezzo, who often has sung at the Houston Grand Opera and is scheduled to do more there, won third place in the Indianapolis contest two years ago. Twyla Robinson, a soprano from Louisiana set to be an Adler Fellow at the San Francisco Opera Center next season, won the $5,000 third prize. Robinson sang arias from Giuseppe Verdi's Due Foscari and Arabella by Richard Strauss.

The $3,000 fourth prize went to Don Frazure, a tenor from Mississippi and based in New York City. A former Juilliard Opera Singer young artist, Frazure performed selections from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Rossini's The Barber of Seville. Other finalists, all of whom won cash prizes, Included Daniel Belcher, a baritone from St. Joseph, Scott Hendricks, a baritone from Pennsylvania; Daniel Mobbs, a baritone from Louisville, Jane Redding, a coloratura soprano from Baton Rouge, Jacqueline Venable, a soprano from Kansas City, and Don-ita Volkwijn, a soprano from Capetown, South Africa, and based in San Francisco. There's no fresh spin or intriguing angle to this story. Basically, there is no ACDC story in Y2K. The long-running band is touring in support of another album, Stiff Upper Lip, on which they do one thing and do it well. It's the same thing spine-tingling boogie rock ACDC has always done. It's also enough, a full two decades after the band's impact era, to attract a crowd of 13,000 on a Sunday night.

Chalk it up to brand loyalty. ACDC has an image that's never been tweaked. They play chords that have never evolved. As Neil Young once told a heckler who petitioned for variety, "It's all one song." That's one wry comment from Neil Young. When applied to ACDC songwriter-guitarist Angus Young, it's an illuminating fact.

Ebbing and flowing isn't on the menu. Leave your expectations for momentum or dynamics at the door. There is occasional logic to the program, such as a rowdy pairing of The Jack and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Earlier, Hard As a Rock and Shoot to Thrill were efficient head-banging partners. All of Young's solos were great, and what's more comforting than the image of his school-boy threads and Gibson SG guitar? Meanwhile, let's recognize the parallels between ACDC vocalist Brian Johnson and Bruce Springsteen two hard-hat rockers with identical facial expressions.

Consider Johnson a randy relative of Springsteen's. A Roger Clinton or Billy Carter to the Boss' Bill or Jimmy. Opening act Slash's Snakepit () was overamplifled to seemingly dangerous levels.
