THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR CCCTRY MUSIC THEATER Akins promotes the old way i i tr rn 5 rertormances make reter ran soar t- -A -Jilt 1 Peter Pan r-r Vo Author Based on the play by Sir James rjarrie, with music by Mark Charlap and Jule Styne and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Etetty Comden and Adolph Green. Cast Shorey Walker as Peter Pan, Erik Stein as Captain Hook, Jacqueline Mil-debrand as Wendy. Location: Beef Boards Dinner Theatre, 9301 Michigan Road. When: Tuesday-Sunday through July 28, performances at 8 p.m. nightly with 1 p.m.

matinees on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets: Call (317) 872-9664. Star ratings: 4 excellent, 3 good, 2 lair, 1 poor. Walker brings this Peter to life with her ragamuffin looks, her gymnast's body and her powerful voice. Jacqueline Hildebrand as Wendy has the remarkable ability to be both a young girl and future mother all In one package.

Nick Steele and George Wiley, playing Michael and John, respectively, are both sixth-graders, but Nick Is a short little dumpling of a Michael and George Is a long, tall John. They work well together, particularly when flying. Ah, yes, the flying. It's not nearly so spectacular as It was at Civic because of Beef Boards' -thrust stage. Peter flies in, toward the audience, and Michael Lay-ton's lighting does nothing to obscure the wires.

But I must say I never saw a wire being attached or detached from a flier, and the In-air ballet Is lovely. Tlnkerbell Is a floating white By Marion Garmel STAFF WRITER re two Peter Pans in one season too many for Indlan-AAapolIs? Not if the second is at Beef Boards Dinner Theatre. While not nearly as technically proficient or lavishly produced as the Peter Pan at Civic Theatre earlier this season, this one Is more emotionally charged. It is blessed with a Peter (Shorey Walker) who is all tomboy, with a voice she can belt to the back of the house. It is blessed with a Captain Hook (Erik Stein) who towers over everyone and has perfect timing in every Joint of his long, loose limbs.

And it is blessed with a director (Suzanne Stark) who once played Peter herself and has a keen understanding of the role as the embodiment of youth all joy, energy and self-congratulation. But she also understands the pathos of Peter, whose existence as a boy who won't grow up robs htm of any chance of finding a deeper emotional relationship. Stark's Peter Pan is staged as an adolescent dream, full of pirates and Indians and adventure. As Peter shouts when he comes to the rescue of Wendy and the lost boys, about to be forced to walk the plank of Captain Hook's pirate ship: "It is Peter Pan. the Avenger!" And he taunts, flying over Hook's head in a swordflght he's sure he will win: "I'm youth.

I'm Joy. I'm freedom." STAFF WRITER Hghen Rhett Akins and his management were looking for a way to break Akins' second album, Somebody New (Decca), they took a page from the Reba McEntlre book which is only natural, considering he's managed by Reba's husband, Nar-vel Blackstock. At any rate, the page they borrowed was the one titled "Hit the Bricks, Shake the Hands, Sign the Autographs, Sell Yourself, and the Album Sales Will Follow." And that's the page that will bring Akins to Indianapolis Tuesday for a round of TV and radio visits and an in-store appearance. He'll be at the Wal-Mart on East Main Street in Plainfleld from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

"Narvel and them were saying back when Reba and George Strait and all those guys were starting out, this was what you did," Akins said. "We got away from that. We rely solely on radio and CMT, I guess, to sell our records." Tried-and-true method "Well, this is the reason Reba and George are still around they started at the earliest point and went and saw the people face-to-face. And so we thought, 'Let's take it back to the old What Akins and his management decided was to choose the top 20 cities in America where his first record did well, and go there to promote the new disc. "And guess what?" he said.

"Indianapolis is consistently in the Top 5. I'm from Georgia, and you'd think that somewhere in the South would be my biggest cities, but it's Houston, Dallas, L.A., Minneapolis and Indianapolis." The recognition came on the strength of his breakthrough single, That Ain't My Truck, a radio light that seems too large and diffuse to be a tiny fairy. But Stein's Hook is a marvel of comic timing, particularly when he slithers in and out of a hole to get Into the underground home of Peter and the lost boys. He's equally commanding as Mr. Darling, giving that usually thankless role plenty of laughs, Stark's clever direction Is full of little tricks and sight gags, making It as funny as It is musical.

Fine performances are turned by all, including Jessica Cogan-Ost as a sympathetic Mrs. Darling, Ty Stover as a funny Smee and Jennifer Ladner as a wonderful Tiger Lily. Melody Finchum a featured dancer with American Cabaret Theatre is terrific as the big, white floppy dog, Nana, who is the children's nurse. Just watch her roll over to have her tummy rubbed. They all, except Nana (who doesn't sing), are in fine voice.

The songs have never seemed more appropriate to their characters. Thorn Hoffman's costumes are mostly traditional, but he's costumed the lost boys to look like something out of Dickens. Well, why not? This is a Victorian fantasy, after all. The show runs 2'2 hours with two intermissions, necessary for changing the scenery. There also are a number of scenes with pirates and Indians running through the aisles, and one where Peter teaches Tiger Lily to crow that is done totally off stage while omore" and Nick Shannon, from Roncalll, was given $100 for having the "most promising 'Broadway' sound." More than 100 students were auditioned at 15 Indiana locales to select the 41 seml-finallsts for the competition.

Judges were Everett McCorvey, head of the University of Kentucky's vocal department; Ruth Golden, voice teacher at New York's Long Island University; Jo Ann Domb, head of the of I C3 File Photo CLASSIC VILLAIN: Erik Stein as Captain Hook is a marvel of comic timing. the pirate ship Is turned Into the Darling bedroom. Michael Layton's scenery is a little threadbare In the Neverland scenes, but he redeems himself In the Darling bedroom and the pi- rate ship. Doug King's choreography Is frenetic but fun, except for a bj-j zarre moment when Peter's shad- ow appears as a man wrapped bv black to dance a duet with him. But none of this subtracts from! the Joy of the production.

As onel member of the audience said as; she rose to applaud the cast at curtain call, "Isn't this great?" For the most, yes It Is. competition vocal department; Sam Sclfres, head of the voice department at Illinois Wesleyan University, and Roger Havranek, who heads the; department at Indiana University. It made a difference this year at Fan Fair, too. It was the second of Akins' still-new career. You don't have to be a star "What I found out last year was, being a newcomer doesn't affect you that much," he said. 'The fans accept you with open arms, even if they've never heard you before. They're kind of on your side already, hoping you're gonna do good.

"Having some good songs In a row (Truck, What They're Talkin' About, 1 Brake For Brunettes and She Said Yes) made this year bigger," he added so big that he couldn't accommodate all the fans in his daily two-hour autograph session. "It's good that that many people want to see you, but it's bad for the people who waited in line for so long when we had to leave. The first two days, anybody who waited in line, we gave them a number and they got to stand in line first the next day. And then the last day, I signed for about a half an hour longer.
