ii T'! a p- iu 'T'" i 'T V't SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1979 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SEC. 8 PAGE 11 THE STXWS TflAVEL REPORT Don't Overlook Hawaii's Uncrowded Maui I Maui, Hawaii iUPI) ODDS ARE THAT if you tell people you are going to Hawaii on vacation most will assume you mean Honolulu or, even more specifically, famed Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu. Oahu has long been the No. 1 destination for visitors to the mid-Pacific islands which now comprise the 50th U.S. state.

fx numerous points of interest for visitors historical as well as scenic. It is the second largest of the islands, after Hawaii, measuring nearly 730 square miles in area. Shaped like a turtle with its head extended upwards, it has mountain ranges in both the small west sector and the large east region linked by flat central plains dotted with huge sugar and pineapple plantations. Lahaina on the east coast was the capital of King Kamehameha who unified the islands in the late 170ns, and remained the seat of the kingdom until King Kamehameha HI moved to Honolulu in 1843. It also was the 19th century whaling capital of the Pacific and the site of numerous clashes between Bible-quoting missionaries and women- and whiskey-starved whalers.

courses. The tennis club has 10 courts, a clubhouse, pro shop and The Grill and Bar are nearby. A unique extra is a whale-watching station built by the hotel at the tip of a promontory reaching into the narrow Molokai channel. The warm waters are the breeding grounds for migratory humpback whales from December through May and the huge mammals, spouting end sporting, are easily visible from the shore. Party boats are available for even closer looks.

KAPALUA IS about one hour's ride from Kahului but only about 15 minutes from the Kannapali airport, which is serviced by commuter planes from Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii, where the big jets land. Maui, which lies about midway between Oahu on the northwest and the Big Island of Hawaii on the southeast, has The Wailea Resort complex includes five beaches, two 18-hole golf courses and a clubhouse, a tennis clubhouse and 11 courts three with lights for night play and three condominium villages with more than 380 units available for vacation rental. There also is the Wailea Town Center, for shopping, and an arts center which offers a variety of courses for visitors and residents. THE AREA ON the southwest coast is about a 30-minute drive from the island's main airport at Kahului, serviced by Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines and commuter lines. Rental cars are available at the airport and are recommended if you plan to stay a while.

Taxi, limo and bus services are also available. A word of caution, however: Don't drive at night if possible. Most roads are narrow, two-lanes, winding, poorly lighted and marked. And there are some unpaved roads and prohibited areas, according to the map provided with a Budget rent-a-car, which are "driven at your own risk and expense." Maui's newest hotel is Rockresorts' Kapalua Bay, on the northwest coast beyond Napili Kai. The hotel is owned by a subsidiary of the Maui Land 'and Pineapple which owns some 23,000 acres of land in the area.

It is the first time Laurance Rockefeller has allowed his Rockresorts to operate a property he did not create. THE 196-ROOM hotel was opened last December and is the focal point of a 750-acre leisure complex called Kapalua, and which includes golf courses, tennis courts, three beaches, water sports, restaurants, shops and condominiums for living or vacation rental. The hotel is constructed in the shape of a modified with a series of Polynesian peaked roof buildings step It still is, but recently more vacationers have been discovering the so-called Neighbor Islands, particularly Maui. The second hotel, Western International's Wailea Beach, was opened last September about one-half mile away. It offers 350 rooms with similar views, a beach, a pool with a separate Jacuzzi, seven restaurants, lounges and bars and a game room, among other facilities and amenities.

About 20 minutes by plane from Honolulu, Maui currently is the second most popular holiday island after Oahu. Its major attractions include miles of uncrowded beaches, all kinds of water and land activities and sports, luxurious resort hotels, a sleeping volcano and fantastic scenery. Maui's first planned resort complex, Kaanapali, was opened in 1962. Today, there are more than 60 hotels, condominiums and cottage colonies on the island, mainly on the west coast, from Napili Kai in the north to Wailea in the south.
