1 V. THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 7, 1978 THE INDIANAPOLIS SMtC Alleged Slayer Who Made Threats To Judge Escapes NEW DNFLDENC COURS SEWI '11 HAVE During the first day of the trail, the proscution's key witness, a 15-year-old boy, testified that he saw Stankewitz shoot the young woman at point-blank range and then boast about the deed, saying, "Did I drop her or did I drop her?" Authorities said that Stankewitz also had threatened to kill the youth after learning he would be called as a witness. The other three defendants are awaiting a separate trial. Miss Graybeal was kidnapped from a Modesto shopping center and driven by her abductors to Fresno.

Witnesses said that after they arrived Stankewitz forced the woman out of the car in a deserted area and shot her in the head. Stankewitz has a history of trouble with the law. In 1973, when he was 16, he was riding in a stolen car which was involved in a high-speed chase with the Highway Patrol. The 17-year-old driver of the car as shot and killed after he had shot a policeman in the face with a shotgun. Fresno.

Calif. (UFI) An alleged murderer who had threatened the judge and jury hearing his case escaped from a holding cell Wednesday. Police immediately started a manhunt for Douglas Stankewitz, 21. Special protection was established for the judge and jurors whom Stankewitz had threatened with death. Stankewitz escaped from a sixth-floor holding cell in the Fresno County Courts Building.

Apparently the cell door had been left unlocked or had a malfunctioning lock. "We are assuming the lock on the holding cell door failed to engage properly," Assistat Sheriff Rober Saum said. "There were no keys to the door missing and there were no signs that the lock was picked or forced." Saum said Stankewitz was placed without handcuffs in the holding cell by a court bailiff who then went to another courtroom. When he returned about 20 minutes later, Stankewitz was gone. He last was seen running through a downtown shopping mall adjacent to the courthouse.

He was wearing street clothes. Stankewitz was brought to the courthouse from the county jail for his trial. He and three other persons were charged with the fatal shooting of Theresa Graybeal, 22, Modesto, last Feb. 8. During his trial, which began two weeks ago, Stankewitz repeatedly threatened Superior Court Judge Robert Martin and his family, as well as the jury.

Last week after Martin threatened to have him shackled and gagged, Stankewitz said. "I already know the outcome of this trial. I know I'll be doing 10 to 15 years and I don't want any part of this." Referring to the jury, which was out of the courtroom at the time, Stankewtiz said, "You know them rats got a number coming." During the same exchange with Martin, Stankewitz asked the judge for his address and the number of members in his family. The questions were ignored by Martin. Saum said security would be provided for Martin and the jury members, but he refused to go into detail.

Former Hughes Aide Flees Island Refuge Smallpox Chief Dies As Probe Clears Lab Birmingham, England (UPI) Professor Henry Bedson, chief of a laboratory suspected to be the source of a smallpox outbreak, died from self-inflicted throat wounds Wednesday just hours before an initial investigation absolved his lab. Officials at Birmingham University said a preliminary inquiry by the Birmingham Area Health Authority "could find no fault with the safety precautions in Bedson's smallpox reference laboratory" at the university. A spokesman for the British Department of Health and Social Security, however, said that until the department's official investigation was completed, the lab couldn't be ruled out as a source of the virus that infected a hospital worker two weeks ago. Bedson, 49, was rushed to hospital five days ago with the self-inflicted injuries.

The Birmingham Accident Hospital announced his death in a one-line statement: "Professor Bedson's condition deteriorated during the night, and he died peacefully at 10:20 a.m." The sources said the king also had planned to withdraw Meier's Tongan diplomatic passport, which he used to flee Sydney, Australia, in July to avoid extradition to the United States. The sources said Meier's whereabouts were unknown, but they noted that he held Canadian citizenship and believed he had returned to his family there. Meier is wanted on federal charges of obstruction of justice in Utah and income tax evasion in Nevada. Wellington. They said he probably is in Canada.
