Swindell, who started from the pole II i In the 15-lap IMCA Modified main event. NASCAR veteran Kenny Schrader led flag-to-flag for the victory. Fortvllle's Ken Dayton ran second to Schrader, while Fort Wayne's Steve Christman took third and Columbus' Russ Petro finished fourth. Greenfield's Rob Young, who clinched the IMCA title last weekend, was 17th. The 60-lap late model stock-car feature had three leaders, with Willie Kraft of Lakefield, taking the win.

Kraft assumed the lead on Lap 56 after Kris Patterson experienced engine trouble and dropped out. Ray Guss finished second, Martinsville's Don O'Neal was third and Bob Hill, who led the first 49 laps, settled for fifth. Mil il Swindell position, captured both Fairgrounds' jap features on mile in his Swindell chassis to Starting 11th, Kinser charged to second and earned enough points to clinch his 12th WOO championship. Glidden posted an elapsed time of 7.155 sec- onds and a top speed of 1192.47 miles per hour. JGeoffrion, still looking for his first victory in six final- round appearances this I season, experienced mechanical problems and -slowed to a 8.467 and ASSOCIATED PRESS Houston Rockets reserve forward Chancellor Nichols remained in stable condition at Hermann Hospital on Sunday after a fall during a preseason game against the Indiana Pacers. Nichols told officials Saturday he had no feeling from the waist down after a fourth-quarter fall in the Pacers' 126-86 rout of the Rockets in preseason play. "Nichols regained feeling in his legs at approximately 11:30 Saturday night," Rockets spokesman Jay Goldberg said Sunday. "All X-rays and tests conducted at Hermann Hospital proved negative." Goldberg said further tests were expected, but team officials believed Nichols would be released Monday.

Charlotte's Dell Curry sank the ensuing two foul shots and Johnny Newman hit two of his own with 3:04 left for a 111-107 lead.

HOCKEY Gartner moves up record list Mike Gartner of the New York Rangers moved into 10th place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list Sunday night by scoring his 542nd career goal in a game against the New York Islanders.

Gartner deflected a shot by James Patrick past goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick at 7:40 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. The goal moved him past Hall of Famer Stan Mikita, who scored 541 goals for the Chicago SAN ANTONIO 102, DETROIT 92 Sean Elliott scored 16 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the visiting Spurs rallied in the second half for a victory over the Pistons. Detroit led 54-48 at halftime. but San Antonio started the second half with a 12-2 run, getting six points each from David Robinson and Vinnie Del Negro. The Spurs pulled away and led 87-73 by the end of the third quarter.

Both offenses stalled in the fourth, but the Pistons were unable to cut San Antonio's lead to less than 10 points. Elliott led all scorers, while Robinson added 17 and Del Negro 15. LA CLIPPERS 111, MILWAUKEE 105 Stanley Roberts scored eight of Los Angeles' final 22 points as the Clippers outran the Bucks in the final quarter.

The Clippers (2-0) led 69-60 in the third quarter after a 15-8 run. The Bucks (0-2) pulled within 89-88 in the fourth quarter but were outscored 22-17 In the final seven minutes. Ken Norman led the Clippers with 24 points and Kiki Vandeweghe had 16. Anthony Avent scored 16 for the Bucks. Alaa Abdelnaby added 15, Including seven in the third quarter as Milwaukee tried to keep the Clippers from pulling away from their 54-52 halftime lead.

Ky. colt sets earning record Mountain Cat became the leading money-winning 2-year-old throughbred in U.S. history Sunday when he earned a $1 million bonus after gradually pulling away at the top of the stretch to post a half-length victory over Living Vicariously in the $200,000 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland Race Track in Lexington, Ky. Ridden by Pat Day, Mountain Cat ran the 1-116 miles on a fast track in 1:45 25. The sleek colt won the bonus by sweeping the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund Series, which included the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs, the Ellis Park Juvenile and the Alysheba Stakes at Turfway Park.

The colt is owned by William T. Young of Lexington and trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Mountain Cat has won six of seven races and will make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Gulfstream Park Oct. 31.

TENNIS Courcol wins Volvo title Daniel Courcol of Mississippi State defeated Mark Merklein of Florida. 6-4. 7-6 (7-3). Sunday in the title match of the Volvo Tennis Collegiate Championships at Austin. The victory made Courcol the first player to win the first two legs of the Collegiate Grand Slam.

Courcol won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Clay Court Championships three weeks ago in Richmond, Va. Courcol also teamed with Laurent Miquelard on Sunday to beat Stanford's Robert Devens and Michael Flanagan, 6-4, 6-2, in the doubles final. Courcol, a senior from France, came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Merklein.

The Blackhawks snapped a three-game losing streak as Belfour stopped Vancouver's big gun, Pavel Bure, six times. Belfour, the 1990-91 Vezina Trophy winner, was 0-2-1 in his first three loss was on Nov. 13. 1991 against Washington.

PHILADELPHIA 5, WINNIPEG 4 Rod Brind'Amour and Doug Evans scored in the final 1:36 Sunday night to lift the host Flyers over the Jets, snapping the Flyers' three-game losing streak.
