THE FIESTA, INTRODUCED last Friday, offers sports-car feel in a quality-built, small-car package.

It is a front wheel drive with a 1.6-liter Kent overhead valve engine with a fully synchronized floor mounted four-speed manual transmission. The Fiesta has EPA fuel ratings of 46 miles a gallon highway driving, 34 miles mpg city and a combined highwaycity of 38 mpg. It is offered in one model, a three-door hatchback with a number of options, including air conditioning. Benton said the Fiesta represents the most extensive car program in Ford history an expenditure of $800 million and seven years of research, design, development and new plant facilities. Built at Ford of Germany's Saarlouis plant, more than 118,000 Fiestas were sold by Ford dealers in Europe during the car's first six months on the market.

THE FORD GRANADA for 1978 receives its first major styling changes since its introduction in 1974. It has a bright grille with rectangular headlamps, wrap-around taillamps and a bright center bar that splits opera windows on the two-door models. The standard engine is a 4.1-liter (250 CID) six-cylinder engine. Optional is a five-liter (302 CID) V-8. A new top of the line Diamond Jubilee Edition Thunderbird and a sports decor option will be added to the 1978 T-Bird series.

The decor group includes a blackout grille, deck-lid straps, dual remote control mirrors and a vinyl roof with color-keyed rear window moldings. Thunderbird's standard equipment includes a five-liter (302 CID) V-8 engine, automatic transmission, power front disc brakes, power steering, power brakes, special handling suspension, radio, clock and dual horns. Two V-8 engines are optional. THE PINTO WILL BE offered in three body styles, a two-door sedan, a three-door Runabout and a station wagon. The standard power train is a 2.3-liter overhead cam engine with four-speed manual transmission.

A 2.8-llter V-8 engine with automatic transmission is optional. The Mustang II for 1978 comes in hardtop and three-door fastback models. A fashion package for women will be offered for the first time. It will include a driver side illuminated visor vanity mirror, a four-way adjustable driver's seat and a variety of other comfort and convenience features. THE LTD II continues with its midsize car comfort, styling and mid-size price for 1978.

There are two and four-door models in three series. The wagon will be discontinued with the introduction of the new Fairmont wagon. The standard power train is a five-liter (302 CID) V-8 with automatic transmission. The family-size LTD hardtops and wagons continue for the 1978 model year with a number of engineering changes, options and a new color choice. The regular-size LTD is still capable of towing travel trailers with loaded weights up to 7,000 pounds and its heavy duty trailer towing package is a 1978 model option.

Ford's Club Wagon has received a number of functional changes, including a four speed overdrive transmission and tilt steering wheel. RMay (W.14-12) 9 4 113 3 WP Rvan 2. 2:25. A 10,103. WESTERN DIVISION Pet.

LAST YEAR, PINTO occupants accounted for 11 of 942 fatalities in fire-associated car crashes, the company said. "In 1976, Pintos accounted for about 2 per cent of all cars in operation, while the involvement rate in fire-associated fatality reports was only 1.17 per cent," Misch said. "This is evidence with substance objective statistics on how the Pinto performs in 'real-world' accidents and it totally discredits the opinions of the alleged safety experts quoted by Mother Jones." The article's author, Mark Dowie, claimed Ford President Lee Iacocca was in a hurry to start making the Pinto in 1970. Dowie said the company ignored tests showing the fuel tank was susceptible to gasoline leaks after an accident because it was too close to the rear bumper. Ford admitted yesterday that the early Pintos did not pass rear-impact tests at 20 miles an hour.

But it denied charges that the test results meant the early Pintos were not safe compared with other cars at the time. Misch said Ford tested 1971 Pintos to find out what changes would have to be made so the model could meet federal rear-impact requirements for the future. "The truth is that in every model year, the Pinto has been tested and met or surpassed the federal fuel-system-integrity standard applicable to it," Misch said. (The fuel-integrity standard is how much gasoline is permitted to leak Krukow (L.8-11) 7 7 4 4 4 5 Giustl 1 2 0 0 0 1 John (W.I6-S) 7 1-3 8 1 1 2 I Rautzhan 2-3 0 0 0 0 1 German 1 0 0 0 1 1 Detroit AP) Older Ford Pintos are not firetraps and the subcompact "appears to be superior" in crashes compared to similar cars, its manufacturer said yesterday. The Ford Motor Co.

statement answered accusations from consumer advocate Ralph Nader and a magazine, which charged Aug. 10 that Ford officials sold Pintos for six years even though they knew the fuel tank could rupture in rear-end accidents. Nader urged an immediate recall of the three million 1970-76 Pintos now on the road. He said the company had modified the 1977 models. BUT FORD BLASTED the charges, which appeared in the September-October issue of Mother Jones, a West Coast-based publication circulated to 150,000 subscribers.

The company repeated its earlier comment that the article contained "distortions and half-truths." "There is no 'serious fire hazard' in the fuel system of the Ford Pinto, nor are any Pinto models exceptionally vulnerable to rear-impact collision fires," Herbert Misch, Ford vice-president for environmental and safety engineering, said. Misch said federal statistics refute the magazine's claim that 70 or more persons burn to death each year because of fuel-tank fires in Pintos. Figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Admirustration show that 848 people died in car accidents involving fires in 1975. Twelve of the 848 were in Pintos, and two of the 12 had been thrown from their cars, Misch said. The contract, along with the existing Save German (9).

"Starting tomorrow, I'm just one more ordinary citizen and I won't have any more responsibilities about defending the title," a smiling Monzon, 35, told a news conference. Sitting next to Monzon was Rodrigo Valdez of Colombia, the Argentinian's last challenger.

They fought in Monaco last July, and Monzon retained the title on a 15-round decision. Monzon repeatedly had said this year that after the fight against Valdez, he was going to retire. Immediately after the fight, he again said he was not going to defend the title again What Monzon did last night was formally send telegrams to the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council announcing his decision to vacate the title. chief executive officer, says the expansion was required by the "success of the company's nationwide aluminum consumer recycling program."
