WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1977 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR PAGE 39 It I IMS HAS iVIfillT UUUIMI Yanks Club Sox For 8-3 Victory A.L.Baseball Chicago (AP) Graig Nettles blasted a three-run homer and Mickey Rivers collected five hits in five at bats and drove in three runs last night to power the New York Yankees to an 8-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Mike Torrez (15-10) gave up 11 hits, struck out three and walked one in posting his 14th complete game. Nettles homer, his 30th of the season, capped a four-run New York uprising in the eighth and provided Torrez with added insurance after Rivers snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh with an RBI single, his fourth straight hit off loser Wilbur Wood (6-6). Thurman Munson opened the New York eighth with a double and scored as Reggie Jackson singled. Jackson went to second on a sacrifice bunt and Chris Chambliss reached first on an error to set the stage for Nettles' homer into the right field stands.

Rivers also had a two-run single when the Yankees scored three times in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Chicago battled back to tie the game however, with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Royals 5, Orioles 2 Kansas City (UPI) Home runs by George Brett and John Mayberry last night carried the Kansas City Royals to their sevennth straight victory, a 5-2 decision over the Baltimore Orioles. Kansas City, which has now won 18 of the last 20 games at home, scored four runs in the fourth inning with the help of an error by Ken Singleton. After Mayberry opened the inning with his 20th homer, Singleton dropped Darrell Porter's fly ball for a three-base error.

Fred Patek then walked and, with two outs, Brett connected for his 16th homer to give Kansas City a 4-2 lead. Baltimore had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth, scoring a pair of unearned runs after Singleton singled, Lee May walked and Andres Mora reached base on an error by Brett. Singleton scored on an infield out and May crossed on a wild pitch by Colborn. Kansas City added its final run in the seventh on a triple by Hal McRae and a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis. Jim Colborn gave up six hits in 8 13 innings to gain his 14th triumph in 26 decisions while Mike Flanagan (9-10) went the distance in absorbing the loss.

Twins 7, Bosox Bloomington, Minn. (UPI) Dave Goltz allowed only one hit a single by Jim Rice in the fourth inning for his 16th triumph last night and hurled the Minnesota Twins to a 7-0 victory over Boston which knocked the Red Sox out of first place in the American League East. Goltz walked three and struck out 10 in recording his 14th complete game. Rod Carew had a homer and Lyman Bostock and Glenn Adams had three hits apiece to lead the Twins' 14-hit attack. Brewers 4, Rangers Arlington, Tex (AP) Sal Bando's two-run homer and Cecil Cooper's solo shot powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers last night behind the pitching of Mike Caldwell and Bill Castro.

Jays 8, A's 1 Oakland (UPI) Otto Velez stroked a bases-loaded double to key a five-run sixth inning last night which staked rookie Jim Clancy to his second major league victory in an 8-1 decision by the Toronto Blue Jays over the Oakland A's.
