Virginia Cherrill Martini dies at 88 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Virginia Cherrill Martini, a former wife of Cary Grant whose acting debut came as a blind flower girl in Charlie Chaplin's silent classic City Lights, has died. She was 88.

Martini died late Thursday at a Santa Barbara hospital. She was in few movies after the 1931 classic and stopped acting after marrying Grant in 1933. "I was no great shakes as an actress." she once said. She met Grant at the premiere of Blonde Venus, in which he had the Associated Press lead. They divorced after two years.

The famous City Lights scene in which Chaplin's little tramp meets the flower girl and falls in love with her was shot more than 300 times before Chaplin was satisfied. Martini later married an English earl: they divorced in 1946. She worked with the American Red Cross and other charities in England during World War II. It was there she met Florian Martini, who became a decorated war ace. After the war, the couple were married in the United States in 1948, settling in Santa Barbara in 1950.

Martini is survived by her husband. Dog that was dragged behind truck almost is ready to high-tail it home WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Fred has nearly licked his wounds. The keeshond that almost was dragged to death behind a truck Sept. 26 could be released and sent home soon.

And some have found his story so fetching they've donated money for the veterinary bills. "Trucking Traveling Fred" had been waiting on the end of a leash at a Texas truck stop to get back on the road with his companion, Jim Rutlege. But another truck ran over his leash and dragged the Associated Press dog for half a mile. Rutledge drove Fred to Purdue University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where the dog has undergone many hours of skin-graft surgery. Rutlege had said he was considering selling his other truck to pay for his dog's treatment, estimated to total about $4,000.

Since then, hospital staff members report that people have called, sent cards and donated money. "Most want to stay anonymous," Dr. Julia Hawthorne said. "They leave money and say they just want to help out Fred.".
