The company went public two years later and now has 14 million subscribers nationwide. Listed by Forbes behind Denver oilman Phil Anschutz among Colorado's richest businessmen, Magness was worth an estimated $1 billion. Gov.

Roy Romer, a close friend to Magness, called him one of Colorado's greatest citizens. "He was a man with as large a heart as anyone I know in Colorado," Romer said. "He was generous, and his wisdom and vision in knowing where cable was going years ago brought a lot to Colorado." Magness had been TCI's chairman since giving the chief executive duties to Malone in 1973. But he remained Involved in the company, recently presiding over TCI's plans to spin off Its broadcast satellite television subsidiary Into a company analysts estimated would be worth up to $3 billion. He was 72. Magness, a billionaire listed by "Forbes magazine as Colorado's sec-. -ond-richest businessman, died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville late Friday. Virginia Cherrill Associated Press SANTA BARBARA. Calif. Virginia Cherrill Martini, a former wife of Cary Grant whose acting debut came as a blind flower girl in Charlie Chaplin's silent classic City Lights, has died. She was 88. Martini died late Thursday at a Santa Barbara hospital.

She was In few movies after the 1931 classic and stopped acting after marrying Grant In 1933. "1 was no great shakes as an actress," she once said. She met Grant at the premiere of Blonde Venus, in which he had the He was elder emeritus of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Carmel. He also was a member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, Oriental Masonic Lodge and Murat Shrine.

Mr. Bryant served on the Altenhelm Community board and was chairman of its resident council. He also was chairman of the advisory board for Crooked Creek Tower. He was the widower of Mary Adams Bryant and Marfan F. Bryant.

Survivors: niece Ruth A. Woods, nephew Robert K. Bryant; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; 10 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. The Rev. OLUE HOSKINS BARGER, 76, Indianapolis, died Nov.

The famous City Lights scene in which Chaplin's little tramp meets the flower girl and falls In love with her was shot more than 300 times before Chaplin was satisfied.

Martini later married an English earl: they divorced In 1946. She worked with the American Red Cross 'and other charities in England during World War II. It was there she met Florian Martini, who became a decorated war ace. After the war, the couple were married In United States In 1948, settling in Santa Barbara in 1950. Martini is survived by her husband.
