"Million-Dollar Bill" has a more natural ring to it than "Million-Dollar Davey." But Davey Allison is the one making an assault this season on the bank vault only Bill Elliott has cracked in stock-car racing. Allison raced to a front-running victory in Sunday's Winston 500.

Parlayed with his Day-tona 500 triumph Feb. 16, it left him only one victory shy of the Winston Million-dollar bonus that goes to a driver can win three of NASCAR's four majors. Only Elliott has claimed the Million, in 1985. And it was El-liott. a four-time winner this sea-son, who lurked at the rear bumper of Allison's Ford Thun-derbird in the lead pack for the final 44 laps of Sunday's race.

I race because I love to race." It's little wonder that Allison regards Talladega Superspeed-way as his favorite track.

His dramatic emergence from a four-abreast duel out of the final turn to win the 101 -mile International Race of Champions sprint here Saturday was a record seventh triumph on the track, including four in ARCA-sanctioned events in his formative racing years. Now, the record is eight. Allison, born in Hollywood but a Hueytown, resident most of his life, clearly was the favorite of most in an estimated throng of 145,000. Five caution periods for 21 of the 188 laps slowed his average speed to 167.608 mph. But many of his race laps were faster than Ernie Irvan's pole-winning 192.831 because of drafting in packs, which increases the pace.

All four accidents were single-car mishaps, a departure from recent history on the Day-tona and Talladega speedways. lengths. Elliott nipped Earnhardt by a bumper for the runner-up spot. "I was going to try to make a move on Davey," Elliott said, "but it just never panned out." Consequently, Ford's winning streak over General Motors products was extended to 13 races dating to September. Allison secured a $100,000 first installment of the Winston Million.

That's the carrot for the first driver who wins two of the four majors. He can collect the remaining $900,000 by capturing the May 24 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, N.C., or the Sept. 6 Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington, S.C. The money's great, Allison admitted. But the prize for him is the NASCAR championship, and with his third victory of 1992 and his third in the past six runnings of the Winston 500 he increased his lead over Elliott to 67 points nine races into a 29-race campaign.

He always sticks his head right in the grass," Whiting said. "I wanted him to tell me he was OK." Instead, Lil E. Tee stood motionless on the lawn, his head held high. Whiting placed his hand on Lil E. Tee's neck.
