TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 1992 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- D-7 IROC cars at Speedway for feasibility test ,1 JSfr though there is no plan at this time for such a race, the Speedway management has approved this feasibility test." I Signore said the drivers were pleased with the initial testing. "They felt the cars were very comfortable and that they never were on the edge," he said. Currently the series Involves four races, each at a different site. "It would be premature to say that we're thinking of bringing an IROC event here.

We still have a lot to learn about the cars on this track," Signore said. "One idea we've had since the beginning of IROC in 1973 was to someday have a special IROC legends race in Indy featuring Indianapolis 500 winners. Al INDIANA Our 36th Year By HANK LOWENKRON ASSOCIATED PRESS A new type of race car was challenging the walls and treacherous four left turns Monday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the first step of what may lead to another race at the fctmed oval. The cars were completing laps around the 2V2-mile track at more than 150 mph some 70 mph slower than the Indy-cars which will begin testing for the Indianapolis 500 on May 2. But, safety was of more concern than speed to the three members of the International Race of Champions testing team piloting Dodge Daytona race cars.

"We're kind of pleased to have the opportunity to see what our cars can do here," said Jay Signore, IROC's president. "We're happy with the first day. Our drivers weren't trying to set any records, they're mainly looking for the right tire compounds and trying various adjustments. "It's a very complex procedure adjusting to a new track, as soon as you try something, a driver wants to change a spring and then it's a whole new Signore said the trio of Davis Marcis, Jim Sauter and Dick Trickle completed laps around the 2'2-mile track at an average speed of 153 mph during their early practice session. "They were reaching 162 on the straightaways but were leaning on the safety side the entire day," Signore said.

"They still have a lot to learn about the track." Speedway president Tony George said no decision had been made to bring an IROC event to the oval, which will host the 76th Indianapolis 500 on May 24. "We have always been intrigued by the concept of involving Indianapolis 500 winners in a race of this type for our fans. Since it is not practical to use Indy cars for such an event, we are interested in evaluating how the IROC cars run at the Speedway. "For now we do not have a specific schedule or timeline in mind." The owners said their new proposal would be presented to the players committee on Tuesday morning. But NHL Players Association executive director Bob Goodenow expressed disappointment at the day's developments, saying that the sides had moved further apart in the area of free agency. "We felt with what we presented to the owners we would "have the basis for an agreement," Goodenow said at a news conference. At his news conference, held before Goodenow's, NHL president John Ziegler dismissed the players' new proposal, a plan formulated over the weekend. "No votes were taken on it," Ziegler said, "(because) none (of the proposals) went to the key issues.

"(The players' proposals) were helpful, but they were something that wasn't going to help the owners' position. Driving toward an agreement, it wasn't high-octane gas." The owners' new proposal marked the first time that they had changed their position since March 28, when they made what they called their "last offer." It was this offer that the players had twice rejected before going on strike on April 1 During the course of both news conferences Monday, it became apparent that the parties were still far apart in the area of licensing. The issue of the division of revenue from hockey cards has become one of the main divisive issues in the negotiations. The players now get about $11 million a year from trading cards and use some of the money to finance their union. Although such revenue has gone to the players for more than 20 years, the owners, who also have their own agreement, want to negotiate for the rights to this money.

The players have said all along that this issue is non-negotiable. Ziegler emphasized at his news conference that he didn't see hockey cards as the players' legal right. "Then we have a serious problem, no question," Goodenow said when informed of Ziegler's remark. Goodenow said that Ziegler had made an alteration in one of the owners' proposals on free agency that set back the negotiations a bit. "This clarification statement (by Ziegler) renders a different interpretation of what we thought we had already agreed to," Goodenow said.

BY ORDER OF THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS Dated: October 22, 1991 nature lover, the recent episode we described of a red-winged blackbird shucking out sunflower seed kernels like a cardinal and other well-known seed eaters may not have been as unusual as we thought.

Last week, as we sat sipping the morning coffee in the same chair and watching birds feed at the same sunflower seed dispenser just outside the glass doors, a male purple grackle came feed at roughly the same spot on the deck where we had observed the red-wing. Just as the red-wing had done It, the grackle worked the sunflower seed back to the in its beak, turned it sideways and teased the kernel out of the seed with that strange little pincher motion of the upper and lower mandibles. We have arrived at the conclusion that the strangeness of this activity may be brought year it was changed to April to reduce stress on fish caught in the survey. "By insuring the continued integrity of Turtle Creek Reservoir, Hoosier Energy will be able to continue to provide public recreation opportunities at the lake," a company news release stated. "Once the survey is completed, Turtle Creek will be open for fishing.

The lake will be open to fishing 24 hours a day when it reopens." Turtle Creek charges a user fee of $1 per day for fishing for those 16 years old and younger and those 65 years old or older. Others pay $3 per day. Boats on Turtle Creek are restricted to 10 horsepower or less. MORE ON BLACKBIRDS Although it was a first for this ARTHUR L. DUNNE IT'S HERE! However late i( may be, the spring mushroom season appears to be getting started in the southern part of the state.

Now all we need is some rain, warmer temperatures and sunshiny days. Reports are filtering in from the southern third of the state on some finds of little black and gray morels, but for the most part the mushrooms have been rather small (typical of this ear-ly-'spring member of the morel family) and there have not been an awful lot of them. The little blacks and grays usually are found on wooded stream banks especially where sycamore trees are found and along hillsides which face the south. However, you might find them anywhere the earth's surface offers good humus with a generous covering of leaves to hold in the moisture. Goosenecks, the little egg-shaped morel caps with long, white stems which allow them to peek up from a deep leaf cover, also will be coming along soon, but there is little pattern to this member of the morel family.

You Just pick them when and where you find them and enjoy. The' goosenecks, incidentally, usually are very light in color and don't get much darker than cream-colored when they are aged. We have not yet heard of any mushroom finds north of a line from Bloomington to Columbus, but reports from the southern third of the state are becoming more numerous every day. Of course, one look at the wild-flowers in that southern region will tell the story. Spring beauty, bloodroot, adder's tongue and a host of other wildflowers bordered on their explosion over the last weekend and the warmer air tempera JUDGE McKenna, Storer, Rowe, White Farrug 200 North LaSalle Street Chicago, Illinois 60601 (312)558-3900 Attorney for Defendant Simon Spitalli 55 West Wacker Drive Chicago, Illinois (312)641-1100 Attorneys for Plaintiff and the Class about by the fact that members of the blackbird family are not often observed feeding at such close range.
