The'' 43-year-old mayor, who was appointed to the top city position last February by the. Southport City Council, when a vacancy occurred, said last night he was not expecting such a large margin. He attributed his election to a "lot of hard work and good help from a lot of good people." The large turnout "shows the people of Southport are interested" in their city, Anderson said. Grist, 41, a general contractor seeking elective office for the first time, said of Bis defeat: "We did better than what we had expected to do. I'm not displeased" at the outcome.

"We know what we were up against when we went. into this," Grist said in reference to Southport's large Republican registration. We had a good program. I thought we could do the job. I knew we cdlild beat the man but I didn't know whether we could beat the (Republican) party," Wical said. "I'll do the best job I know how." WICAL, 56, had' campaigned hard on the issue of becoming a full-time mayor here. Wical is employed by L.

Strauss Co. at Castleton and has sajd he would quit his job if elected. Wical said the present administration was a government for "a special few" and had criticized lack of traffic control and the park department's operation. This is Wical's first attempt at public office, which he considered was a "break, not being a politician." He carried his aampaign from door-to-door and said he had a "small personal organization" helping him. About 56 per cent of Noblesville's registered voters went to the polls.

Geshwiler said he won his home precinct over Petrecca, a 45-year-old regional- sales manager: for a chemical company, by a 3-2 ratio.

The two which were lost to the Republicans were precincts where apartment completes have a heavy influence on the vote, the mayor said.
