Please tend resume rience at the moderately-sized university campuses, while currently only the large Blooming-ton and Indianapolis campuses have housing programs, and the latter is quite limited." In view of several other major construction priorities, prospects for traditional, university-owned residence halls would not be feasible, IU officials said. IU has regional campuses in Fort Wayne, Gary, Indianapolis, Kokomo, New Albany, Richmond and South Bend.

Additional discussion on the Idea is expected this fall. As expected, trustees voted Saturday to strengthen the university's Investment policy regarding firms that do business In South Africa. The vote was to not allow the university to Invest directly in securities of a firm with direct investments or employees in South Africa unless the products the company manufactures or sells do not further the policy of apartheid. The policy states that firms also would have to adhere to a statement of principles designed to oppose apartheid and assist blacks. Also, the trustees approved a plan to explore selling the main building of the old university warehouse complex known as the Showers Building, located west of the Bloomington campus on the northwest corner of Eighth and Morton streets.

The building originally was part of the Showers Furniture Factory, purchased by IU in 1959. RN's NEW PAY RATES! Lot's of Shifts Available! $24Hr. Thru Critical Core Med Surg Needed 253-0611 Kokomo. Discussion was based on a preliminary report from a task force named by IU President Thomas Ehrlich on March 2. "University enrollment has been growing steadily overall, and full-time enrollment at regional campuses has followed this trend, leading to a growing interest in the development of student housing on those campuses," the report stated. "We were terribly disappointed when we had to go home as civilians," Wyall said. "But it's fascinating the way the women developed when they got out of the service.

It seemed to have a big impact. They became aviators, educators, developers. Once they made up their mind, they could do what they wanted and started new careers." Wyall went back to Indiana and flew for the Reconstruction Finance which had bought trainers from the military to recondition and sell. Her role as historian came much later. The WASPs, who had grown close during their training, met periodically after the war.

But by 1951, Wyall said, many had focused more on their careers or families. In 1964, Wyall invited several WASPs to get together at the international convention in Cincinnati of the Ninety-Nines, the international women's pilots association. The group got its start under Amelia Earhart, its name based on the number of responses the famous flier got when she tried to organize female pilots in 1929. Wyall's efforts netted 86 WASPs at the convention and Cochran as speaker. Wyall said the good times prompted them to decide to meet again.

They now get together every other year. Wyall was voted permanent historian in 1978. "It's interesting and it keeps me busy," she said. "I inherited scrapbooks, letters, photos, things people have written. I've got a whole guest house full of stuff.

I made an inventory In 1987 there are lots of videos and over 300 slides, newsletters, personal letters and many magazine articles." Wyall also has files on the effort to make the civilian WASPs who lost 38 women during the war part of the military. In 1977, Congress recognized the women as veterans. Two years later, the Air Force accepted them under its auspices. In 1984. each WASP was awarded the Victory medal, and those who served for more than a year also received the American Theater medal.

"Everybody wrote letters to their congressmen," Wyall explained. "1 have a scrapbook showing WASPs from every state wrote that we should be militarized. It worked." Wyall's interest in flying continued after the war and her marriage to Gene Wyall. The mother of five bought her own plane in 1966. She delivered freight and provided passenger service with the single-engine Cessna 182 out -of Baer Field in Fort Wayne.

When the plane became too expensive in 1971, the Wyalls sold it. For the next five years, Wyall worked as an instrument pilot for two Fort Wayne businessmen. "I love flying," said Wyall, who no longer has a current pilot's license. "It's Just that you have a chance to get off by yourself. like to turn off the radio and get out and fly.

You can't do that much anymore they follow you so they know exactly what altitude you're at and where you're going. It's not as much fun as 40 years ago." The trip to the Soviet Union gave her a chance to think back. She put on her original-issue blue uniform It still fits for some of the meetings with the Soviet women. She said she'd always wanted to meet one of the "Night Witches" because she'd read so much about the women who flew in combat and ferried planes. Wyall said it took a while to get the reserved Soviet women to open up.

Eventually, she said, they relaxed and, before too long, everyone was singing songs from the war and dancing in a big conga line. "It was a true friendship that we felt, almost a bond," Wyall said. "We wanted to hear about what they did. They were grandmothers like we were, and I'm sure they hadn't thought about their war experiences for some time. They told us wonderful stories.

It was a chance for them to get together and reminisce, too." Continued from Page 1 lots to obituaries of six women who claimed to have been WASPs but whose names never appeared on training rosters. She keeps most of the material In a small converted bunkhouse on the farm where she lives south of Fort Wayne. The WASPs flew during World War II ferrying aircraft, towing targets, testing planes and flying all types of fighters. Their work helped release male pilots for combat duty overseas. Nine WASPs live in Indiana, according to Wyall, whose count includes Josie Orr, wife of for-mer Gov.

Robert D. Orr, who how is ambassador to Singapore. The women's flying wing got its start in 1942 through the efforts of two women. Jacqueline Cochran and Nancy Harkness Cochran proposed a training school for female pilots as part of the Army Air Forces. Love wanted women who already knew how to fly to serve "as civilian pilots with the Air Transport Command, ferrying 'planes from factories to fields.

The two groups were launched independently and were com-jbined by August 1943 Into the WASPs. with Cochran leading the group and Love as director of Its ferrying division. About 25,000 women applied to Join the WASPs. Wyall said, 'and 1,830 were accepted. In 1.074 finished the difficult training regimen.

Wyall started flying after graduating from DePauw Univer-'slty in 1943, often using the I former Sky Harbor Airport In Indianapolis. In May 1944, at age 21. Wyall then Mary Martin began training as a WASP. She was in the last 'class of WASPs before the group 'was deactivated in December 1944. She spent her final days as a WASP moving planes from Avenger Field In Sweetwater.
