TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1988 1 ML INUIANAFULIS STAR (j. 7 U.S. coach predicts divers may take 5 Olympic medals ted McCormick a silver. She placed eighth in that meet. Although McCormick finished third behind two Chinese divers at the Seoul International Diving Meet in early June, she isn't concerned by the Chinese.

"It's going to be a great competition, but I'm not worrying about it." said McCormick. "You start worrying about them, you start psyching yourself out already." Wendy Lucero will Join McCormick in the battle on the springboard. Her 529.98 in the Trials finals was a silver-medal score in 1984. McCormick and Lucero will be pressed by LI Qlng and Gao Min, both of China, and Soviet Irena Lashko. Michele Mitchell will try to trade her 1984 silver for Seoul gold.

Both Mitchell and Wendy Lian Williams surpassed the 1984 gold-medal score with their final-round totals at the Trials. Soviet and Chinese women will be the principal opponents on the platform, too. As for the men, Greg Louganis will be favored to sweep the springboard and platform as he did In 1984. If he triumphs, Louganis will be only the second diver to win gold medals in two Olympics. American Patricia McCormick, Kelly's mother, was the first in 1952 and 1956.

Louganis will be challenged by Chinese athletes, but O'Brien said the schedule in Seoul favors him. By JOANNE LYNCH STAR STAFF WRITER Five is the magic number for the Olympic diving team. Olympic coach Ron O'Brien said Sunday the divers will do well to bring home five medals from Seoul, South Korea. "Everything's got to go Just right to do that," said O'Brien, "but I wouldn't change my prediction that if we get five medals over there, we'll be doing a real good job and anything over that would be phenomenal." In the 1984 Games at Los Angeles, America won eight diving medals as all of its divers medaled. However, the Sovl- et divers stayed home and the Chinese athletes were just emerging as medal threats in 1984.

All the diving powers will be in Seoul, which probably means fewer American triumphs. "I think we're going to have the most competition in the women's events from the Chinese, primarily," said O'Brien. "They (the Chinese) have the capability of going one-two in both events. The Russians have some good girls, too." Judging by the scores at the Olympic Trials, which ended Sunday in the Na-tatorium at IUPUI. the United States will send some good girls, too.

Kelly McCormick scored 578.22 points to win the 3-meter springboard. That would have given her the gold medal in Los Angeles instead of the silver she took. A 578 at the 1986 World Championships would have net board first, then get a five-day rest before the tower. Mark Bradshaw and Patrick Jeffrey, who will compete in their first Olympics, don't have to worry about doubling. Bradshaw scored 714.21 points' in the final round of the Trials springboard competition enough to have given him the silver medal in 1984.

The Ohio State graduate finished fourth behind Louganis and two Chinese divers at an international meet in Boca Raton. Fla in May. Jeffrey, another Ohio State grad. finished fourth in the same meet on the platform. His final-round score at the Trials would have been good for a silver medal in Los Angeles.

In the women's 10-meter platform. Louganis will compete in the spring Pocono gets a bumpy response from drivers seeking smooth ride The main straightaway was repaved two years ago and Turn Two which goes over a tunnel has been repaved a number of times. Some of the top drivers spoke of the state of the track and the need to make it smoother. Comments gathered during the race weekend ranged from diplomatic to blunt, but all were in agreement that resurfacing the 2V2-mile tri-oval would be in order. "This is a great place to come to race provided they do resurface it," said Rick Mears, who has won this race twice in the last four years.

"The drivers think it's a fun track, a great track." "It would be nice if they would resurface It like they're doing at Indianapolis now," added Sullivan, who won here in 1984 and declined to say more. "My response to the situation is that when I look around and see what other tracks are doing. I don't understand why what they're doing at this track isn't commeasurate with the others," said Bobby Rahal, who won Sunday's Quaker State 500 here. Emerson Fittipaldl, however, was more critical. "If you want my opinion, we shouldn't run here.

The surface is so rough. In one practice session, I missed my pit twice because I couldn't get the car stopped It bounced." As for what might happen to Pocono for '89, a future meeting between CART officials and PIR President Dr. Joseph Mattioli and General Manager Joseph Mattioli III will determine the fate of the race. Track spokesman Bob Pleban said that PIR was willing to listen to CART proposals concerning the facility and Implement them if feasible. "We're planning to have the race next year," Pleban said.

UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Dallas quarterback Steve Pelluer looks for running room after Chicago defense forces him out of the pocket. By RICK SHAFFER STAR STAFF WRITER Long Pond, Pa. Since hosting its first 500-mile Indy-car race in 1971, the Pocono International Raceway has presented a unique challenge to the drivers. It offers what no other super-speedway on the circuit can offer in the form of three turns banked at different angles (14, eight and six degrees, respectively) and the longest straightaway In Indy-car racing. When drivers talk about setting up a car for the track, the word "compromise" gets used a lot.

As 1985 Indianapolis 500 winner Danny Sullivan will tell you, it's unlike any other track they race. "It's like comparing an apple to an orange," Sullivan said. "At Indianapolis, you really have to worry about two different turns one and three and two and four. At Michigan, you have a turn on each end. "At Pocono, they're all different you do have to compromise on the setup." And by coincidence, it's a compromise that may be needed if Championship Auto Racing Teams are to return here next year.

That's because In addition to the variety of turns, PIR also has the distinction of being the roughest track in the CARTPPG World Series. The cold winter weather which prevails in the Pocono Mountains has taken its toll on the track. Efforts to patch the numerous cracks with tar have simply given it a washboard Wright named starting QB by Green Bay FROM STAR WIRE SERVICES Randy Wright was awarded the Green Bay Packers' quarterback job by Coach Lindy Infante on Monday, but another longtime starter. Phoenix' Neal Lo-max, found his position in a bit of jeopardy. -Infante announced that Wright, the incumbent off-and-on for the last four years, would start the opening game Sept.

4 NFL ROUNDUP against the Los Angeles Rams ahead of Don Majkowskl, with whom he shared it last year, and Marc Wilson, the former Los Angeles Raider. "This thing needs to get over with." said Infante, who said he felt Wright had the best grasp of his offense. "You always have doubts because if you don't have a secure position or if you don't think you do, you always think the worst, "you think the best, you always have a million thoughts going through your mind," said Wright, who clinched the job with two touchdown passes Saturday night in a 21-21 tie with Kansas City. Phoenix Coach Gene Stall-ings, meanwhile, said he's starting to worry about Lomax, the two-time Pro Bowler who just signed a $1.4 million a year contract extension. "Neil may not be concerned about the preseason, but I am," Stallings said after watching films of Sunday night's overtime loss to Minnesota.

"I need to see some production." In three preseason games, Lomax has completed just 39 percent of his passes, 22 of 56, for 258 yards and no touchdowns. He was intercepted three times in Sunday night's game, which dropped Phoenix's preseason record to 0-3. Brown completed the final year of his four-year contract with Los Angeles in 1987, but the Rams retain his contract rights. Brown did not qualify for an Olympic berth during last month's U.S. Trials. DALLAS 17, CHICAGO 9 Dallas' ball-hawking defense created six turnovers Monday night, including Manny Hen-drix's 34-yard interception return for a touchdown with 39 seconds left, to give the Cowboys a 17-9 NFL preseason victory over the Chicago Bears. Dallas won Its second consecutive preseason game, a feat the Cowboys hadn't accomplished since the 1985 season.

Chicago dropped to 1 -2.
