Al- though he didn't rule out going as far as the West Coast, he said the Rocky Mountains would be a more practical limit to westward expansion. In that direction, it appears Bradley of the Missouri Valley Conference has dropped any plans to join the MCC, but two other possibilities remain: Creighton and Drake. Now that Duquesne, from the Atlantic 10 Conference, and LaSalle of the Metro Atlantic have made their moves, there Is the possibility that St. Joseph's (Philadelphia, Atlantic 10) and Loyola (Baltimore, Metro) could follow. But DiEdwardo sees no further expansion before 1993.

The MCC, which may have a new name by spring, expects to grow to as many as 16 members whose athletic teams would com- pete in two divisions. East and West. The commissioner said the conference has had discussions ')' with "eight or nine" schools which he would not identify. The first sports In which the -new schools will compete next T. fall most likely will be men's soccer, women's volleyball and cross country and men's golf, DiEdwardo said.

"I imagine the first championship they'll com-, pete in will be the men's golf tournament at Notre Dame (next fall)." he added. The MCC receives automatic qualification to NCAA championships in men's soccer, baseball and men's and women's basketball. Women's volleyball is granted automatic qualification to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The present lineup increases the number of television households in the MCC coverage area, thus boosting the conference's revenue potential. The addition of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh brings to three the number of members in the top seven markets and six of the top 10.
