THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 1991 B-8 Bubka, Foster take gold in World Trad 1 m. 3. 1. I -X 1 (Til After clearing his first attempt at I8-8V4, he passed until 19-4 'A. He missed his first try at that height, then passed, and missed again In his first shot at the next height, 19-6'A.

At that point, he was sixth. And had he been unsuccessful on his next attempt, he would have finished there and Istvan Bagyula of Hungary would have won. But just as he did in the '88 Olympics, the world record holder won on his final Jump, clearing 1 9-6 'A and breaking the championship record of 1 9-2lA he set In 1987. Like Bubka, the 33-year-old Foster Is unbeaten in World Championship finals, and just like the Soviet, he set a championship record. Both he and Pierce were timed In 1 3.06 seconds, but Fos ter outleaned him and was declared the winner.

Pettigrew, a senior at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C., and the 1989 and 1991 U.S. champion, scored the biggest victory of his career in the 400, clocking 44.57. Lewis, already the winner of the 100-meter dash In a world-record 9.86 and winner of seven gold medals In seven world championship events, served notice that he was on target for another gold by leaping 28-1 in the long Jump qualifying. O'Brien, who missed the decathlon world record total of 8,847 points by Britain's Daley Thompson by three points at the U.S.

Championships in June, totaled 6,396 through seven events, Just 12 points of Thompson's record pace. Dan O'Brien gained the lead midway through the decathlon. Bubka, meanwhile, has been battling his emotions over the political tension in the Soviet Union as well as injuries to both heels.

He had trouble with his feet Thursday. To curb the pain, he was given an injection 90 minutes before the competition and another late in the competition. By BERT ROSENTHAL ASSOCIATED PRESS Tokyo Sergei Bubka didn't know If he could win, and Greg Foster didn't know if he did win. But with one last leap and one last lean, both had gold medals for the third straight time at the World Track and Field Championships. Foster edged Jack Pierce in the 110-meter high hurdles on Thursday, while an ailing Bubka of the Soviet Union soared 19 feet, 4 'A inches for a dramatic victory in the pole vault.

It was a bittersweet day for the Americans, though. Antonio Pettigrew won the 400 meters. Carl Lewis prepped for today's long Jump final with the best mark ever in qualifying. It turned out all right." One thing MacPherson has learned Is New England made two good moves on draft day when it selected Southern Cal offensive tackle Pat Harlow and Arizona State running back Leonard Russell fn the first round. They will be in the starting lineup Sunday. "Both have exceeded where we thought they would be at this stage." he said. "Both have made a dynamic impact." BASEBALL Michael defends Taylor pact New York Yankees general manager Gene Michael, answering remarks by former owner George Stelnbrenner, defended his decision to give top draft pick Brlen Taylor a record $1.55 million contract. "If he (Stelnbrenner) were here, he would have signed him," Michael said.

"1 guarantee you. We did the right thing." By avoiding a major league contract, the Yankees do not have to save a spot for the 19-year-old pitcher on the 40-man roster or next year's 15-man roster that will be used to protect players from the two expansion teams. Michael made his remarks in a short and fiery meeting with reporters before Thursday night's game with the Toronto Blue Jays. Michael's comments were prompted by an Interview published In Newsday, In which Stelbrenner said that Michael should be "ashamed" for signing Taylor to a contract worth $1.55 million. Michael contended that everyone in the Yankee organization wanted Taylor signed, regardless of price.

He criticized Stelnbrenner for distorting facts and said he was being undermined by him. Ironically, Stelnbrenner had hired Michael last August as general manager In his last final act before he was banned from making baseball decisions. Only four days ago. Stelnbrenner had told Newsday that Michael "ought to be shot" if he failed to sign Taylor, a comment that many thought was responsible for Michael's willingness to pay Taylor $1.55 million. 8-2 BJ for anybody who could catch some fish. "There's plenty for everybody," he said. We got there too late on the first day to get bait and all the gear lined up for perch, but Skip took us out for trout and salmon and that turned out Just as successful. Hot weather had moved these fish to deep water, too. But we found the chlnook salmon and lake trout about 8 miles offshore In water that ranged between 80 and 100 feet deep and worked them over with larger spoons fished with downrlggers.

Actually, the angler writes his own ticket when he goes for Skip's "Combo American Plan," which provides for two fishing trips on Lake Michigan, one night at the nearby Holiday Inn Holl-dome, and a fish dinner there on the evening of the first day of fishing (with the fish you caught). There also Is continental breakfast on the boat and a box lunch for the second day of fishing. The anglers decide whether they want to fish for trout and salmon or perch. There are other trips, of course, but the combo goes for $149.99 per person (six anglers per trip), and this Is very hard to beat especially when you go home with those trout and salmon filets. 8- (( 9- 1 Saturday il-OOOO ST. JOSEPH, Mich. "There they are right where they were supposed to be," Capt. Skip Stafford said, pointing to the screen on one of several fish-locating gadgets that rested on the console of his "Trophy Fishing" boat. We were 3 or 4 miles out from this beautiful little city on Lake Michigan's shores and if you can believe an electronic gadget, a huge school of yellow (ring) perch, the thing that had lured me there, was right below us.

They were 57 feet below to be exact, smack on the bottom. While I took care of anchoring chores. Skip was baiting up little spinning outfits with two-hook bottom fishing rigs for his two daughters, Katy, 7, and Kassy, 4. Live shiner minnows less than 1 V2 Inches were placed on plain hooks and the treble hooks of small spoons known as Arrowheads. If I had any doubts about the truthfulness of that electronic equipment, they were erased about the time I got back to the stern of the boat.

For there was Katy, cranking the handle of her reel while the little rod throbbed and a "Jumbo" perch came to the surface. In a matter of seconds I had a line In the water and headed for the bottom thanks to half an ounce of lead. Dave Mull, a freelance writer from Elkhart, and Greg Sand-qulst, the cameraman who films Capt. Skip's "Trophy Fishing" television shows, had moved in Just behind us, and they were after them, too. That was the way this whole thing got started.

I had been at St. Joe earlier this summer, but that was for salmon and trout. While there I was quizzing Skip about the Jumbo perch fishing and he had Invited me to come up when he made a perch-fishing By "BAYOU BILL" SCIFRES segment of his show later. He had expected cooler water temperatures to bring the perch In close by now, but the hot weather held and the perch remained far off shore. Incidentally, If you want to see a 7-year-old girl work me over at perch fishing, Skip said this segment of his show, "Trophy Fishing," will be aired in January or February.

At any rate, Skip said since the perch did not come In, we would go out after them. The two-hook bottom rig used for this kind of fishing Is nothing more than a strong length of monofilament line (about 18 Inches long) with a double-eyed swivel on one end and a snap swivel on the other. The line is tied to the free end of the double-eyed swivel and a bell sinker of the angler's choice is snapped on the other end. Between the two are either two hooks spaced so they cannot easily get together. We modified the rig slightly by using the Vfe-ounce Arrowhead (Rebel Lures) on the bottom and It worked like magic.

A slow, up-and-down motion with the rod tip seemed to bring best results, but the fish took the minnows even without motion. "How do smaller boats or those with less sophisticated electronics find the fish?" we asked during a lull. "Look around!" Skip said. There were eight or 10 smaller boats moving In on our spot. "They know we're on 'em," he said, adding that he was happy Taylor Made WOODS MANUFACTURERS OVERSTOCK SALE LAB0E5T INVENT IN THE STATE OFF Please Call!
