They didn't leave disappointed. In a game filled with sparkling plays, both offensively and defensively, the Braves proved to have a few more weapons in beating the Bison 46-27. "It was an exciting football game, and I'm just glad we were able to make as many big plays as we did," said Alcorn State coach Cardell Jones. "We have a lot to be proud of. Our offense and defense really performed well." Most of that offensive firepower was Ignited by freshman quarterback Steve McNair, who completed 23 of 36 passes for 433 yards three touchdowns, all to senior wide receiver Cedric Tillman.

"McNair had an outstanding day," Jones said. "1 hope he can continue to throw like that for the next few years. He and Tillman are a great combination." Tillman also had an outstanding day with ten receptions for 161 yards. "We had the right chemistry going and took advantage of it," McNair said. "I saw that Cedric kept beating his man so I kept throwing to him.

He doesn't need a whole lot of room to be effective." The Braves (4-1) broke open a close game by scoring 13 unanswered points In the third quarter, breaking a 21-21 tie. Sophomore running back Harry Brown (96 yards in 23 carries) scored from the Bison 2, then McNair fired a perfect 39-yard touchdown strike to Tillman, giving Alcorn State a 34-21 lead. Howard cut the lead to 34-27 after a 10-yard touchdown pass from Carr to running back Robert Taylor in the fourth, but the Braves responded with a 30-yard scoring run by Mark Merchant, making it 40-27. A 1-yard run in the final minutes by the Braves' Cherone Harness made it 46-27. "They had a lot of guys hurt us," said Howard coach Steve Wilson.

"It seemed like when we got i back into the game, they would make a big play to knock us back. I'm sure it was an entertaining game for all the fans, but I wished we'd stopped them when we had to." magie vkou Alcorn Stall 7 14 13 12-44 Howard 7 14 0 4-27 How Heathcock 1 run (Mooya kick) ASU-Tillman 20 pass from McNair (While kick) ASU-McNair 4 run (White kick) ASU-Tillman 44 pass from McNair (White kick) How Carr 45 run (Mooya kick) How-Harrell 29 pass from Carr (Mooya kick) ASU-Brown 2 run (White kick) ASU-Tillman 39 pass from McNair (kick failed) How-Taylor 10 pass from Carr (kick failed) ASU-Merchant 30 run (kick failed) ASU-Harness 1 run (kick failed) ASU How First downs 29 20 Rushes-yards 50-222 32-187 Passing 433 214 Return Yards 23 10 Comp-Att-int 24-34-0 18-39-3 Punts 3-37 8-33 Fumbles-Lost 3-2 0-0 Penalties-Yards 11-93 10-77 Time of Possession 32:13 27:47 INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS I RUSHING-Alcorn Brown 23-96, McNair 4-45, Merchant 7-42. It appeared as though the explosive Braves were going to dispose of the Bison (2-3) early, building a 21-7 lead in the second period. Howard struck first, taking advantage of an Alcorn State fumble that they recovered on the Braves' 40. Two plays later, running back Gary Harrell came around on a reverse and raced 38 yards.

That set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Ryan Heathcock, giving Howard an early 7-0 advantage. The Braves answered later in the period as a result of a little trickery. McNair, who consistently carved up the Bison defense, flipped the ball to Bryant Herrien, who gave it back to McNair who drilled a 20-yard touchdown strike to Tillman that tied the game at 7-7. McNair then scored on a 2-yard run before lofting a 44-yard strike to Tillman that gave the Braves a 21-7 lead with 10:06 left in the half. The Bison struck back with two big plays to tie the game at 21-21 just before the half ended.

The first came on a Classic record 65-yard run on a keeper by quarterback Donald Carr. Carr later connected with the speedy Harrell for a 29-yard scoring play. The Braves had a chance to regain the lead on the last play of the half, but a fourth down run by Brown from the Howard 2 was stopped short of the goal line with two seconds left.
