"There's No Business Like Show-business" which became a popular classic, was written as a "throwaway," to let the theater curtain come down so the next scene could be set. He readily admits being an incorrigible romantic and Howard Dietz, an AiSCAP colleague, has quipped that the current concern about the population explosion can be "largely attributed to Irving Berlin's love songs." His contributions to worthy causes have been more than generous; he has donated all the royalties from both "God Bless America," it earned more than $356,000 and "This Is the Army" musical show about $10,000. His first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy," was published when he was 19.

It earned him 37 cents in royalties. HE IS TIIE only Academy Awards "presenter" ever to give himself an Oscar, according to WiOR's Joe Franklin, King of Nostalgia. When Berlin opened the fateful envelope in 1942 and read the winner of the best song, it was his own ''White Christmas." Referring to Easter Parade," "God Bless America" and "White Christmas," Stanley Adams, president of Ai-CAP the American Society of Composers and Publishers of which Berlin is a charter member said, "He's the only man I know in the music business ho has cornered the market on American holidays." His "White Christmas" still holds the record for record sales in history, more than 99 million worldwide.

Berlin wrote the song as a somewhat satirical comment on a group of wealthy movie stars lolling around a Hollywood pool. 'Tutzi" Hanfstaengel, a Bavarian pianist and intimate of Adolf Hitler, recently revealed that nothing would calm the excited and upset Hitler better than playing Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" for him. Hanfstaengel, of course, never let Hitler know that the composer was a Russian-born American Jew. Berlin has no hobbies ex cept his work, but he is known as a gourmet. Unlike a great many other prominent songwriters, he is a modest person, which is illustrated by the wire he sent to fellow composer Cole Porter when the latter's "Kiss Me Kate" opened on Broadway: "Anything I can do you can do better." HE DEBUNKS the story that he composes with just one or two fingers on the piano, insists he uses all his fingers, "but very badly."
