Six hours and one plane flight later, Johncock was making a personal appearance at a tool rental outlet In Carmel, Ind.

By 3 p.m., both Johncocks were back In the field. Sunday, Johncock, 54, will become the second-oldest driver to start an Indianapolis 500, behind A.J, Foyt, 56, in the field for the 34th straight year. But Johncock, a two-time Indy 500 winner, might be the first to brave the brickyard suffering from tractor lag. "Yeah, we shut off both tractors about two hours ago, and my Dad picked us up in the field with a six-wheeler," Johncock said before the promotional appearance. "Then we rushed up to the house to shower and dress, and here we are In Indianapolis." Johncock raises corn, hay and cattle on his 335-acre spread, which he began farming two years ago.

He qualified 33rd for Sunday's 33-car field in a Ron Hemelgarn-owned 1990 Lola-Cos-worth at 213.812 mph, the fastest time ever for the final position. Johncock insists that he entered May more driven to prepare his fields for planting than plant himself in the "500" field for the 23rd time. "I had a (ride) going the first of the month, then it didn't pan out. So I came down here for the first weekend of qualifying, and It didn't look like anything was going to happen. So we went back home to start working the fields." The next morning, Johncock returned from the fields to find a message from Hemelgarn, whose two primary cars already had been qualified by Stan Fox and Buddy Lazier.

"So here I am," said Johncock. Johncock's Indy victories were in 1973 and '82 for owner Pat Patrick of Jackson. He has made no more than three Indy-car starts In any season since 13 races In 1984, but says he doesn't approach each "500" as his last. "But I've often thought about wanting to be the oldest driver to ever run here. That would be awful nice.

How old Is A. By CURT CAVIN STAR STAFF WRITER True story. A newspaper reporter approaches Indy-car owner Dick Simon about the escalating costs of his sport's equipment. "How much did you pay for a rear wing five years ago?" the reporter asked, "Two thousand dollars. 'Chalky' (Eamon Ful-lalove) made It for me," Simon answered.

"How much does one cost now?" "Twelve Interview continues. "How much Is a "How much Is a "How much Is a Simon, remembering the conversation, can only sit and chuckle. "That's the way he asked the questions," he said. "1 answered every one honestly, but I didn't get to elaborate. There is more to the story.

"I asked a guy one time what a loaf of bread costs. He said he didn't know. I remember when It was 1 1 cents. Look how much a loaf has gone up. "The thing is, I don't care how much a loaf of bread costs because I'm going to buy it.

My only concern Is how I'm going to pay for It." Simon believes that theory relates to Indy-car racing. "Most of the media Is caught up In the escalating costs of racing, that we're making It so expensive that we're forcing people out," he said. "We (the owners) are creating our own situation. Right now, my team Is working on a device which allows the driver to put more pressure in the right rear shock with the flip of a switch. Some day everyone may want one at $20,000 a pop.

"I don't have to buy, for example, five (computerized) PI dashboards at $32,000 each, but I want to win. I'll spend whatever It takes. The cost Is for us to decide. If nobody buys the PI, the price will come down until we think it's fair." Even though Simon could sell ol) to Pennzoll, he does have a point. Eighteen years ago he purchased an Eagle chassis from Dan Gurney for $53,000 (minus motor).

This year, a new Lola arrives in Simon's garage for $315,000 (minus dashboard). STAR STAFF ILLUSTRATION "And you can't get there overnight." Simon has taken that approach to his sponsors, who seem to be upping the kitty at a significant pace. Amway came on board a few years ago for $1.2 million. This year they've contributed more than $5 million. Hoechst Celanese, a conglomerate, began with $500,000 for four races, Including Indy.

They're over three times that for '91 and racing at 11 venues. That helps Simon put a package together for Brayton's Chevy V-8. A new front wing and nose kit, which Is created through extensive research and development, costs $16,000. Time in a wind tunnel, where aerodynamics are scrutinized and detailed, can cost as much as $1,800 per day. A lack of mass production also skyrockets the cost.

"People keep saying we have to cut costs, but what CART needs to do is come up with a program to help teams who don't know how to attract sponsors and how to make sure those sponsors are happy," he said. "There are a lot of teams who know how to race and set up a car, but they don't know how to market one. "That's the cost area we must Improve." "Yes, It's expensive, but the whole damned world has gotten more expensive," he insists. Simon Is a mix of every owner involved with the 1991 Indianapolis 500. He has a Chevrolet-powered Lola (Scott Drayton's), a '90 LolaCos-worth (Tero Palmroth's) and a '91 LolaBuick pro Matsushita's) In Sunday's race, Simon Isn't Indy's other PPG (Penske, Patrick and Galles), but he's trying to climb the ladder.

Success doesn't come overnight and neither does the equipment. For several years, Simon's team worked out of a "firehouse" which cost $55,000. Before that, the team operated out of an IMS garage (no air conditioning, no abundance of space). This summer, Simon will open his state-of-the-art facility west of the speedway. It is a project years In the making.

"I think you have to leave a Penske as your goal for whatever you're doing, race car, equipment or otherwise," Simon says. "It should be 'How can we come up to his rather than bringing him down to ours.
