They have their own version of a new girl in town, and it is quite an interesting beauty. This is the Audi, which actually is an old-line German automobile.

It is new to Indianapolis, however, and represents one of the more unique engineering approaches to automotive design which often are the hallmarks found in imported motor cars. THE AUDI STARTS out by dling characteristics of all front drives, it considerably enhanced the stability both in turns and on wet slippery surfaces. But an unexpected factor was it rode more like an American automobile than a European one. The ride was relatively soft and produced a definite degree of body float. This also contributed to some body lean and roll when pulling through fast, sharp turns.

Steering was easy, even with no power assist, and there was no wheel fight when power was applied to the front wheels in the turns. They would straighten out instantly, however, if the driver lets go of the steering wheel. Probably control is helped by the fact the power isn't sufficient to really break everything loose, but it does move the machine about with ample flexibility. Zero to 60 miles an hour at Indianapolis Raceway Park took 12.86 seconds. Passing is moderately quick by downshifting into third gear.

The test car was equipped with a tachometer, and this is quite useful when using a four-speed gearbox. The engine is much happier if the revs are 1970 Audi MOOtL: 100 LS four -door ledjn. Price: J4.0KI.S0. Bine: EQUIPMENT ON CAR. Radio.

The Audi bears the typical marks of Teutonic workmanship which virtually is standard with German automobiles. Everything fits tight. The ist-terior appointments have a touch of old world plushness about them. And the exterior paint has a depth of finish often found only on custom-built automobiles. The Audi is being represented by the Kline Porsche-Audi agency here, and the 100-LS model which the agency's general manager, Jim Osborne, had available for a test car last week represented one of the more expensive versions on this marque.

11 kept above about 1,800. In heavy, slow traffic it often is necessary to drop into second when the other cars suddenly begin to move out. THE AUDI has deep foot wells both front and rear which give passengers a considerable amount of foot room. The front bucket seats, which have reclining backs, arc fairly comfortable, although a driver who likes to sprawl out will find the seat portion just a bit narrow. Fuel consumption, of course, is on the small side since the powerplant displaces but 107.5 cubic inches.

Gas mileage amounted to 24.4 miles per gallon for overall city and highway driving. There were some things which we thought were inconvenient about the car. They were minor but annoying. The front doors had catchall trays on their bottom forward edges, and you tend to kick them exiting from the scats. The door handles were not easy to grip to open the doors.

And there was some play in the drive train, bijthis did not interfer in any way with an exceptionally smooth gearbox shift pattern. QUALITY CONTROL on the body was very good. Mechanically, the speedometer tended to be a little fast in the upper speed ranges, and the throw out bearing for the clutch was noisy. The 1970 Audi 100 LS four-door sedan is represented In Indianapolis by Kline Porsche-Audi, 5158 North Keystone Avenue. (Next Week: Camaro) doing a number of things different than the average automobile.

It features front-wheel drive which in itself now is no stranger to the American motorists, and it achieves maximum forward tractive effort by mounting the engine ahead of the front wheel. Power is by a Mercedes-de I signed four-cylinder engine which puts out up to 115- horsepower. But'in the of any great numbers of our flying friends these days it is necessary to rely upon another harbinger of the coming warmth. This is Harlan Fcnglcr's annual Cars Of Fame exhibition at.

Dayton, 0., and it again is time to display a brand-new lineup of famous cars. With the event slated to be held in the Coliseum at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton Friday, Saturday and' Sunday, Harlan, who is better known to Indianapolis residents as the chief steward of the 500-Mile Race, again has come up with a varied selection of machinery. Some of it represents sonic quite vivid history of the automotive industry. Some have contributed to the history of the Speedway. And some will play a part in history yet to be made.

From a futuristic standpoint, the United States Steel Corp. is contributing its Innovari II vehicle which looks like something right out of the 21st Century. Chevrolet Motor Division will present its Astro III, and there will be a Wankel engine display showing the rotary powerplant which currently is causing much excitement in Europe and Japan. The machines which caught more of our personal interest, however, had to do with the past. These were the two Cum-, mins Diesel racers, circa 1934 and 1952, the 16-cylinder Sampson Sph, which utilized the engine from the wrecked Frank Lockhart' Daytona Beach mile straightaway record and Augie Duesenberg's own Duesenberg roadster whose engine had a racing head designed by brother Fred Duesenberg for the A Duesie jobs of the early 1930s.

The roadster holds some special memories, because many times some years ago we -used to view it in its resting place In Augic's workshop next to the chicken house on the farm. After Augie got along in years to where he couldn't work on it any more he parked it there. It wasn't too long-before the chickens made it a home away from home, and when the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum mechanics came to pick it up for a restoration job we understand there was one hell of a battle between the hens and the wrench twisters, for possession of the old Duesenberg. Aside from the past, there is a wide scope of equipment on tap at the Cars show. It takes in about everything from the Oldsmobile 4-4-2 pace car to the go-karts, and it represents one of the broadest selection of speed machinery in the Midwest.

IT WOULD APPEAR that at times auto racing makes some strange bedfellows. After all, it is not every day that a National Association For Stock Car Auto Racing engine which was declared illegal is mated to a Gold Cup boat. Louis (Sonny) Meyer who has been connected for years with the Ford racing engine, and a retired Los Angeles fireman named Walter Knudsen, have done just that. The two have dropped a pair of Ford's 427-cubic-inch single overhead cam V-8s into an unlimited hydroplane, and just to be a bit different they have made it a rear engine boat. Knudsen was in town at the Meyer shop with some of the pieces last week.

Of special interest was the V-drive which he designed and built himself. The drive, whose 5-degree shaft angle is the lowest ever made, was specially built to handle the two single-stick V-8s back-to-back. Instead of having the engines in line. Sonny ilMiave jone Jurning, ift a direction and the -other, counter clockwise. Walt, who has been working on the boat for eight years, jhas come up with a craft which is 28 feet long and 12 feet wide.

The two Fords are expected to provide something like 1,400 horsepower to drive it over the water in what they hope will be in excess of 200 miles an hour. Sonny will do the driving. He has held the 48-cubic Inch world straightaway record twice, has been competition champion twice and has been American Power Boat Region 12 champion for three different years. The two fellows are trying to supplant money with know-how, and are undaunted even with some of the engineers at if "Wy Our Hitlers I SIZE REPLACES PRICE F78-14 7.75-14 $26 $2.55 G78-14 8.25-14 $28 $2.67 H78-14 8.55-14 $30 $2.93 F78-15 7.75-15 $26 $2.61 G78-15 8.25-15 $28 $2.77 H78-15 8.55-15 $30 $2.98 J78-15 I 8.85-15 $32 $3.08 All prices plus trade-in tires. Sometimes, what's believed to be a rear end noise is eventually traced to front wheel bearings that are grease-starved, loose or scuffed.
