Religion Tin: Indianapolis Star I)-8 SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 1991 TRENDS 9 1 'ft Evangelical group assails 'cults My Answer Founders label Mor-monism and several other faiths "pseudo-Christian." By CAROL ELROD STAR RELIGION WRITER LA gusta Hartlng believes IJl that orthodox Christian ity la uiiuri uiidiiv from cults, non-tradi li New Age practices have their roots In Hinduism. Critics of organizations like Families Against Cults say labeling a religious group a cult Is a form of name-calling. What ts a cult to one group may not be to another. Stephen J. Stein, chairman of the department of religious studies at Indiana University, said it Is common In the United States to use the words "sect" and "cult" as pejoratlves, much as the word "communist" was used in the 1950s.

Not automatically bad He and other researchers do not use the terms that way, Stein said. They define sects and cults as "voluntary associations that dissent from the norms of the society In which they are found." While there may be associations that have a bad effect on their members and even may abuse them, a cult or sect Is not In Itself bad, Stein said. "It's not automatically negative just because (members) dissent from what most people think." The degree of the dissent from society "Is all on a continuum. Churches are on one end and these groups (that are considered to be cults) are on the other." Both cults and mainstream churches, for example, use special techniques to teach beliefs to their members. While cult critics may say the cult Indoctrinates Its members, the mainstream churches really do the same thing.

"You can call this Sunday School (In the mainstream church), but It's a cultivation of attitudes." Families Against Cults may be reached through its noon to midnight hotline, (317) 844-8055. The ex-Jehovah's Witnesses have a 24-hour hotline, (317) 271-3178. She and her husband, Dan, had been Mormons 15 years. After they left the Mormon Church, the Hartlngs organized the Indlanapolis-arca chapter of the national organization Ex-Mormons for Jesus, They started Families Against Cults when they "met some folks who were ex-Jchovah's Witnesses and they also felt called Into ministry," said Harting. The ex-Witnesses "had been helping those who came out of that organization to find normalcy and to find the real Jesus Christ," said Hartlng, now a member of Northside Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist congregation.

Hartlng and Families Against Cults are particularly concerned these days about the Influence of the New Age and a renewed emphasis on paganism. She and Jenny Anderson, the Families Against Cults co-leader, were appalled at the New Age content of the recent Indiana-polls meeting of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. New Age and Hinduism Workshops attended by the psychotherapists were on such subjects as dancing for universal peace, drumming and healing through dream Imagery. Anderson took color pictures of the convention's opening ritual, which Harting described as "a fertility rite." They said It particularly disturbed them that emotionally vulnerable people might unwittingly go to therapists who espouse these New Age beliefs. What Hartlng objects to most In New Age Is "there's nothing right and nothing wrong and nothing for sure.

There's no eternal punishment and per se no sin." This represents a shift to Eastern thought and away from "Jesus Christ's absolutes and values." Both she and Larson said 5 My husband was ffJtjB only 54 when he died unexpectedly from a heart attack about a year ago. I don't think 1 will ever get over it. Why did God make him die when he should have had many more years ahead of him? To be honest, I am angry at God for doing this. Mrs. L.K.

A I wish I had a full answer to your question but I don't, because we don't always know all the reasons why God allows certain things to happen. God knows everything; we do not. As the Bible says, "The secret things belong to the Lord our God" (Deuteronomy At the same time, we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that God directly causes everything that happens, even tragedies. He may allow them but He doesn't necessarily cause them. But the most Important thing 1 can tell you is that God understands your grief and your anger and He wants to help you, because He loves you.

Your reaction Is understandable but don't let It cut you off from the very source of help you need. Yes, you may have a hard time believing right now that God cares for you but He does. The proof Is that Christ went to the cross to save you and give 'you the hope of eternal life. Let me suggest a prayer something like this: "God, I don't understand why this happened. And you know how I feel about It.

But I need you, God, and by faith I give you my life. 1 confess my sins to you. and I invite Jesus Christ, your Son, to come Into my heart to forgive me and cleanse me and guide me every day. In Jesus' name." Tribune Media Services A STAR STAFF PHOTO JEFF ATTEBERRY Agusta Harting of Carmel and her husband helped found Families Against Cults after leaving the Mormon faith. tional groups that call themselves Christian and by the New Age.

And she Is not alone. Tune In Pat Robertson's 700 Club show or John Ankerberg on WHMB-Channcl 40. Pick up a book by Dave Hunt, Texe Marrs or Dob Larson. Listen to conservative Christians talk and you will hear about their fears. Hartlng, a Cannel resident, did more than talk.

She formed Families Against Cults to aid those who are trying to break free from cults and those who feel frightened by America's religious landscape. The group also provides a rallying place for those who want to spread what they believe Is the true Christian message. Webster's Third New International Dictionary defines a cult as a "system of beliefs and ritual connected with the worship of a deity, a spirit or a group of de- Itlcs." A second meaning Is a religion regarded as unorthodox or counterfeit. But Hartlng and those who write books about cults from an evangelical or fundamentalist Christian viewpoint are more specific. Out of the mainstream She says cults have interpretations of the Bible which are different from the mainstream.

Many times, there are extra writings the cult's leaders put on the same level with the Bible. The cult also may have a charismatic leader whose words are considered sacred. Particularly dangerous to the unwary are the "pseudo-Christian" cults which pervert the main doctrines of Christianity, Hartlng says. They have little in common "with biblically orthodox Christianity other than the terminology." Families Against Cults, the cult expert Bob Larson In his book Larson 's Book of Cults and the Watchman Expositor Cult Catalog for 1991 Include In their list of cults such well recognized religious groups as the following: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science. Unity School of Christianity and the Unitarlan-Universalist denomination.

All meet the cult definition In some way, Hartlng said. The cult list also includes such lesser known groups as the Church Universal and Trium phant, Eckankar, The Way International and the Unification Church. The number of cults Is difficult to pin down. Hartlng says there are 5,000 In the United States alone. In his 1988 book.

Larson estimated the number at between 1,500 and 3,000. Hartlng believes that as time goes on, "we will see more false prophets. It's one of the signs of the end times. I believe that." Rejected Mormon beliefs Her work against cults began In 1981 when, during an Illness, she began reading her Bible, watching religious television programs such as Pat Robertson's 700 Club and reading books that characterized Mormonlsm as a cult.
