The 42-lap. 75-mlle race for a total purse of $750,000 Included a mandatory pit stop for two tires and 5 gallons of fuel by each of the 10 starters. Rahal. who Jumped into the lead at the start, passing pole-starter Raul Boesel of Brazil, led until he pitted on lap 32. "My car was loose and I wanted the left-side tires changed." Rahal said.

"We had agreed to change right side tires before the race because it is quicker. "When I came in, I was yelling 'left side, left But my crew didn't get the message. They put the right (side) tires on anyway. Luckily, the car straightened itself out." Rahal was then able to hold off strong challenges from Danny Sullivan and Emerson Flttipaldl to win the race. Flttipaldi inherited the lead and dashed off to a big lead, building the margin to as much as 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, Rahal passed Boesel for second on lap 25 and Sullivan, dogging Rahal's rear wheels, moved past the Brazilian to take third two laps later. When Flttipaldi pitted for his mandatory two tires and 5 gallons of fuel on lap 32, Rahal regained the lead. But Flttipal-di's crew got him out of the pits in just 10 seconds, allowing the two-time Formula One champion to get back onto the 1.784-mlle. nine-turn Tamiami Park circuit just ahead of Sullivan. Flttipaldi then went after the lead, chopping deeply into Rahal's lead until he trailed by Just 2.4 seconds at the end of lap 40.

A few drops of rain began falling, but the hard racing continued until, suddenly, Fittlpal- di's car slowed and, on the final lap, he stopped on the track, apparently out of fuel. Sullivan sped past to take second, place, finishing 8.327 seconds behind Rahal's March. Boesel. a substitute in the race for injured Roberto Guerrero of Colombia, finishing third. Fittipaldi wound up fourth.

Al Unser the only other entry running at the end, was fifth. Sullivan earned $135,000 for second, while Boesel earned $90,000 and Fittipaldi $70,000. No starter earned less than $20,000. Rick Mears.
