The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which climbed slowly for two days, chieved a peak of more than 1,001 in iarly trading before it turned back. At flie close, the Dow was down 4.33 at 995.01. The Dow average last dosed above on July 14, at 1,005.16. 'DECLINING ISSUES on the New jYork Stock Exchange outnumbered advances about 7 to 6 yesterday, Big Board trading was on the slug-gish side at 17.15 million shares compared with 18.5 million Tuesday, "There is a tendency to take profits around 1,000 simply because it has worked that way so many times," one analyst said.

Other concerns on investors minds were the pause that has developed in the economic recovery and the outcome of the GOP presidential convention at Kansas City, brokers said. THE PROFIT TAKING that appeared at the 1,000 mark centered on jnany of the market's high-priced Burroughs slumped 3 to 89'4; Eastman Kodak, Vk to 97V4; Du Pont, yk to 137V4, and Disney, Vk to 49. Gold stocks were lower because of harp declines in bullion prices on European markets. The most active NYSE-listed stock Jvas Household Finance, up to 20 on 217,800 shares over all. Stanley L. Hawkins, Shot Tuesday, Dies Stanley L.
