I Not that wc or he didn't want to. But Allen, host of the syndicated This Week In Baseball for all Its 15 years, was too busy to talk when reached at home In Connecticut last week.

"I'm watching the Yankees-Ned Sox game," he said, "and I have to, lor work." "Have to?" "Work?" It is, of course, a lie. Oh, sure, it Is "work" In the sense that a paycheck Is Involved. Hut Allen, a baseball announcer since the 1930s, loves what he does. And some week, we'll talk to him about what It's like to have been around the game for more than 50 years. Hut for now, let us consider what It means for his weekly show to have been around for 15 years.

When the highlights show started In 1977, there was little else like it. "It gave baseball and baseball fans something that had never really existed before," said producer Stu Klrshenbaum. CNN and ESPN, and their nightly roundup of scores and plays, didn't exist. Satellite technology wasn't sending two leagues full of highlights to the local TV station every day. Nor were those highlights being sent to TWIB.

either. In Its early years, the show had to arrange for Its own cameraman at each park to tape the whole game. The tapes then were shipped to New York from all over the country, usually In time for that weekend's show. But the tapes "might come on Friday, they might come on Monday." Klrshenbaum said. "You never knew." Staffers then would watch every tape and document every play, so producers could go through later and find exactly what they wanted.

Today, all the viewing about 250 hours worth a week Is done In New Jersey. There, staffers tape all games via satellite. Kirshenbaum said TWIB avoids competing with the nightly cable shows by concentrating on Its strengths the perspective a week offers. It's not much, but It's something. "We can do something In depth, which they really can't do," Kirshenbaum said of CNN and ESPN.

"Every night, they've got to show highlights from any number of games. There's only so much time you can budget." TWIB can spend a little of that time to decide what was Important during the week, and package It differently. Today, for example, there will be a newsreel-style wrapup of a week full of fantastic finishes. In Indianapolis, the show can be seen at 1 1 :30 a.m. Saturdays on WMCC (Channel 23).

Together again The last time Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis shared a track, Johnson won and then lost. So Lewis, who had lost, won. It was the 1988 Olympics In and Ben Johnson of Canada beat Carl Lewis of the United States In the 100-meter dash. Johnson set a record of 9.79 seconds, which lasted about as long as it took him to test positive for steroid use. Lewis got the gold.

Johnson got to leave the country. Now, they get their drug-free (it Is hoped) rematch. It happens Monday at the International Track and Field Grand Prix In Vllleneuve d'Ascq, France. It starts at 5 p.m. on Black Entertainment Television.

Low power, low profile A new low-power station has been broadcasting In Indiana-polls for more than a month, not that you'd notice. One reason Is, It Involves the primitive world of Before Cable. W27AR (Channel 27) Is a Ul IF station which for now Is simulcasting the signal for WTHR (Channel 13). But occasionally, it carries other NBC programming which WTHR takes a pass on. The only place to see the golfers at today's Mazda LPGA Championship Is to tune In Channel 27.
