FREE A. -I-D BUSINESS MACHINES REX Lloyd Ruby, like Andy JGranatelli, asked the question "Why" yesterday and was at war with- in himself to find the answer.

"I just don't think it's to be for us," the soft-spoken Texan said as he stood in his garage. "This is getting to be a habit out here, and it's not much fun." Ruby was out in front and buzzing towards auto racing's great golden bonanza when a coil started popping behind him in the fourth turn of the 175th lap. IT WAS A carbon copy of 1966, when Ruby led for 68 laps, more than anyone else in the race, only to be black-flagged for an oil leak while sitting on a 48-second lead. His crew ran to the garage and back again, establishing a meet record for the distance, repaired the coil and gave Lloyd's No. 25 Gene White Special its much-needed coil and pushed Ruby away to an eventual fifth-place finish.

But, even as they worked, is was obvious all hope for victory, again so close, was again gone. "It was just one of those things," Ruby said. "You could run a coil for years and never have it go bad. So it just picked that particular time to go bad. What can you do?" GRANATF.LLI lost his shot at a first "500" victory on the 192d lap, when Joe Leonard's turbine gasped and died.

And while Granatelli got sympathy from every newsman in Indiana, Ruby stood by himself in front of his locker, calmly studying the crowd that was ignoring him in his own garage. Ruby, like just about everyone else, had thought the turbines would walk away from everything. "Frankly, the turbines didn't run nearly as well as I thought they would," he said, "but that doesn't mean I've changed my mind about 'em any. "FAR AS I'M concerned, they're still a different class of machine, and they should be running in separate races. They don't belong here." Heartbreak or no, though, Ruby is determined to keep taking shots at the fame he has so long deserved and, somehow, never received.

He is determined to one day win the 500-Mile Race. "Sure, I'll be hack next year. No doubt of it. Next May, don't worry, I'll be here. "Our luck's got to change some day." J.H.

It might have been a beautiful race. I was sitting there on the pit wall watching.

But I didn't see anything. I was too miserable. had my sights set on Joe Leonard. 1 thought to myself, "man, I am going to be leading the first lap." Then I looked at my gauges. Trouble.

The waste gate that is supposed to throw the excess junk out of the engine was stuck and keeping it in. Just like Parnelli, last year, Joe had it and the wheel of fortune spun the other way. BOBBY UNSER drove a good, tough race. He was shooting for all the marbles all the way.

He really had that machine singing a song. Bobby is a nice fellow, but he sure is getting greedy. He won't let the rest of us win anything this season. It must have been a great race for the spectators with the leaders having a real dogfight almost all the way. We were fortunate to have a nice, clean race.

With all the rain and little time to practice, we all were a little worried. But everything went fine and that's a tribute to the drivers and to the mechanics who worked so hard to get the cars in shape.
