Texas 6 Syracuse 37, Vanderbilt 10 I' Next Week's Games Ole Miss at Auburn Alabama at Florida LSU at Texas Tulane at Miss. State UCLA at Tennessee SMU at Vanderbilt hi ft STARKVILLE, Miss. Rodney Stowers capped a fourth-period defensive stand with a sack of Texas quarterback Peter Gardere, assuring Mississippi State's 13-6 defeat of the 13th-ranked Longhorns on Saturday. Texas drove 45 yards to a first down at the Mississippi State 19 with about three minutes to play. Keith Joseph and Jerome Brown combined to block a Gardere pass, another throw was batted down near the goal line, and Kevin Henry blocked another pass on third down to set the stage for Stowers' drive-ending tackle with 2:19 to play.

Mississippi State, a perennial also-ran in the Southeastern Conference, is 2-0 under Jackie Sherrill, the former Pitt and Texas coach who returned to the sidelines this season after two years away from football. Although the school has changed, Sherrill's mastery of Texis continues. His teams have now won six straight from the Longhorns. Texas, the defending Southwest Conference champion and a 9'4-point favorite, missed another opportunity earlier in the fourth quarter after Bo Robinson's 46-yard interception return to the Mississippi State 6. The Longhorns, who were limited to 211 yards total offense, were held out of the end zone and had to settle for Jason Ziegler's 22-yard field goal with 7:57 remaining.

William Robinson threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to tight end Treddis Anderson and Chris Gardner kicked field goals of 36 and 34 yards as Mississippi State spoiled Texas' season opener. Mississippi State has allowed just nine points all on field goals in the first two games. The defense constantly hurried Gardere, who threw for only 87 yards in completing 13 of 26 passes, and limited Longhorns tailback Butch Hadnot to 67 yards on 14 carries. State got its only touchdown with 17 seconds left in the first quarter when Robinson connected across the middle with Anderson, who was wide open at the 20-yard line and bulled over Texas safety Lance Gunn at the 2 to get into the end zone. Robinson, who completed eight of 19 passes for 119 yards, had earlier kept the drive alive by converting a third-and-10 situation with a 21-yard pass to Kenny Roberts to the Texas 39.

Georgia 31, LSU 10 ATHENS, Ga. Garrison Hearst scored two touchdowns and Larry Ware went 38 yards on a screen pass for another, leading Georgia to its victory over Louisiana State. The Bulldogs (2-0) shut down LSU's offense in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. It also 4 MEMPHIS, Tenn. Marvin Courtney scored a 3-yard touchdown and Brian Lee kicked a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter as Mississippi beat Memphis State 10-0 in a mistake-filled game on Saturday night.

Memphis State, which upset Southern California 24-10 on Monday, committed five turnovers and was unable to capitalize when Mississippi (2-0) lost two fumbles in its own territory in the fourth quarter. The Tigers got inside the Ole Miss 20 both times, but Joe Allison missed a field goal and reserve quarterback Joe Cole threw an interception with nine seconds left. Memphis State's starting quarterback, Keith Benton, fumbled three times in the first half, twice in his own territory. Courtney's touchdown 5:49 into the game came four plays after a poor Memphis State punt gave the Rebels possession at the Tigers' 29. Midway through the first quarter, Benton was hit by Phillip Kent and fumbled.

Kent recovered at the Memphis State 24, leading to Lee's field goal. Mississippi failed to capitalize on the Benton's other two fumbles as Lee missed field goals of 39 and 49 yards, both wide right. Lee missed a third field goal in the second half after a penalty nullified his successful 30-yard kick. Ole Miss travels to Auburn Saturday for a 6 p.m. SEC game.

Kentucky 23, Miami, Ohio 20 LEXINGTON, Ky. Brad Smith passed for two touchdowns, including a 34-yard strike to Kurt Johnson with 3 57 left in the game, to lead Kentucky to a victory over Miami of Ohio. Kentucky (1-0) took possession on the Miami 35 following a punt with 4:46 to go. After Terry Samuels carried the ball for one yard, Smith hit Johnson on the run at the 15 and he went untouched into the end zone for a 23-12 advantage. Smith, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 198 yards and had two intercepted, also connected on a 22-yard scoring pass to a diving Mark Chatmon in the end zone four seconds before the half for a 16-9 lead.

After Johnson's touchdown reception, Miami (1-1) moved the ball 69 yards on seven plays in 81 seconds, with Jim Clement's throwing an 11-yard TD pass to Jeremy Patterson. Clement then passed to Patterson for the two-point conversion. Kentucky, ending a three-game losing streak to the Redskins, ran off the remaining time on runs of 5 and 6 yards by Samuels and 8 and 3 by Dale See. was the season opener for the Tigers Auocuwd PfMt Kenny Roberts gets tripped Hearst capped a 74-yard drive after the opening kickoff with a 3-yard run and scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter. Ware, who rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries, scored on the screen from Greg Talley to give Georgia a 17-0 lead midway through the second period.

At the time of Ware's touchdown, LSU had netted only 24 yards on five possessions and had no first downs. The victory snapped a three-game winning streak the series by LSU and cut the Tigers' series advantage to 12-7-1. LSU got its initial first down two plays after Ware's screen-pass touchdown when Todd Kinchen went up in heavy traffic to grab a 35-yard pass from Jesse Daigle on the Georgia 46. The Tigers put together a 51-yard drive later in the second quarter and cut the lead to 17-3 on a 32-yard field goal by Pedro Suarez 1 24 before half time. Florida 59, San Jose St.

21 GAINESVILLE, Fla. Shane Matthews threw five touchdown passes and Florida's "Fun and Gun" offense produced 506 yards, carrying the sixth-ranked Gators to a season-opening rout of San Jose State. Taking up where he left of in 1990 when he passed for 2,952 yards and 23 TDs, Matthews connected with Harrison Houston on a 22-yard scoring play on Florida's first offensive snap. Houston, a sophomore who caught only four passes last season, also scored on receptions of 37 and 14 yards. Matthews, who completed 17 of 22 passes for 272 yards, finished the first half with four TDs after throwing 24 yards to Willie Jackson late in the second quarter.

Florida, 9-2 a year ago but denied its first Southeastern Conference title because of NCAA probation, pulled away from the defending Big West champions with four touchdowns in the last eight minutes of the opening half. Syracuse 37, Vanderbilt 10 SYRACUSE, Y. Tight end Chris Gedney caught a 35-yard touchdown pass and defensive back Tony Montemorra returned a fumble for a score as No. 24 Syracuse broke open a close game with a six-minute scoring burst to win its season-opener over Vanderbilt. The Orangemen, who gave new coach Paul Pas-qualoni his first victory, scored 34 straight points after falling behind 10-3 late in the second quarter.

He does know, however, what position he'll be playing this time around, and that's enough at this point. Gray spent his first two seasons at Auburn roaming back and forth from tight end to offensive tackle, unsure of what position he would play each week. He began at tight end as a redshirt freshman in 1989, but when injuries depleted the tackle position toward the end of the year, he was moved over to offer help. The play of Anniston's Victor Hall at tight end enabled the move to be made.

Last season, he played two games at tight end, making two catches, then was moved back to tackle where he started three games. Again, injuries called for his help and the play of Hall and Fred Baxter allowed him to make the move without causing a depth problem at tight end. He missed the Peach Bowl because of an appendectomy but was greeted with good news as the Tigers prepared to begin spring practice: He was going to be at tackle and he would stay there all year. Honest. So far, so good.

Gray took the news with enthusiasm and longer stays at the dinner table. As a tight end, the 6-foot-4 junior, from Birmingham weighed 220 pounds. Now that he needs a little more size to deal with opposing defensive linemen, he weighs in at 275, making it even less likely he'll return to tight end. "I'm pretty sure I won't be moved this year," Gray said. "I'm probably too heavy to go back to tight end now anyway.

"It's better being a starting tackle than a part time tight end." Although he has moved into the starting position, Gray said he still has some things to learn, lessons he must pick up quickly because many Billy Williams Lenn Costner, General Manager, of Sunny King Used Cars is proud to announce that Billy Williams has joined the used car professional sales staff. Billy has many years of automotive experience and Invites you to come by and let him show you one of the fine pre-owned cars, trucks, or vans in stock now. For a great deal it's Billy Williams and QL.ce of his teammates along the offensive line are young. In the Tigers' season-opening 32-17 win against Georgia Southern, redshirt freshmen Chris Holland and Juan Crum started at the guard spots. Gray was joined by sophomore Anthony Redmon at tackle.

Yet when Auburn established its offensive game in the second half, it did so with a lineup of senior Eddie Blake and junior Tim Tillman at guards, junior Gray and sophomore Wayne Gandy at tackles. The key for the Tigers' offensive line this season is depth. Apparently, Auburn will be depending on lots of players along the line this year. And depth is a subject Gray knows something about. "We've had a lot of freshmen come on and help," Gray said.

"In practice, they've been doing pretty good and they've shown a lot of improvement." Improvement is Gray's goal, too. "I've had more time to concen trate on just one position, so that's helped me," Gray said. "I feel better about things than I did last year. I know what to expect and what is expected of me." Gray said he feels better about "something missing" in the group's attitude. As far as the offensive line is concerned, the expectations aren't as high as they were a year ago when Blake, Ed King and Rob? Selby were expected to anchor what many predicted would be the best offensive line in the country.

It didn't work out that way. "I think it helps us out that there aren't as many expectations this year," Gray said. "It has made it easier to get ready for the season. Because I'm a junior, one of the older players, I know that people are going to be looking to me to be a leader. We've all me and Eddie and Bob Meeks and Tim Tillman got to be the leaders." That will be an easier task for Gray now that he knows what position he'll be playing each week.
