Vasser also said he has subpoenaed cellular phone records in past cases and would never have made such a call from his cell phone. "It's ridiculous to think I'd be foolish enough to do something like that," Vasser said.

A list of potential witnesses to be called during Yasser's hearing includes the custodian of calling records at BellSouth, Cellular One and BellSouth Mobility. The complaint also said Vasser had attempted to shift blame for any hoax by suggesting his partner called the planning department. Jones told the Anniston board Tuesday, is that the state will allow changes in the budgets after they are filed. That fact allowed the board members to relax somewhat in their questions about a budget they had not had time to peruse in any depth. As approved, the budget is much like last year's. It projects some $20.7 million in revenues, up from $19.4 million in fiscal 1996. The revenues include $13 million in state funds, up from $12.6 million a year ago; $2.5 million in federal funds, little changed from last year; and $4.9 million in local money, an increase from last year's budgeted $3.85 million.

Projected expenditures are $19.45 million, about the same as last year. The budget shows an anticipated $346,000 balance at the end of the school year, but it does not yet account for some personnel that still must be hired: a coach at the high school and a clerk at the middle school. Board members speculated during the meeting that the recent resignations of some teachers with some seniority in the system may bring windfall savings if they are replaced with less experienced teachers who are lower on the pay scale. Goodwin said reorganization following the resignations has made it possible to reduce the high school faculty by one position. The board will meet again Thursday night for its regular monthly session.

County board meets Thursday on budget The Calhoun County school board will give last-minute consideration Thursday night to a budget the school system must send to the state Department of Education in Montgomery by Friday morning. A work session to consider the budget will come at the end of a regular board meeting that will begin at 6 p.m. in the board room of the school system's central office at the of only $32,218, Burnett said. The company's liabilities exceed its assets by some $370,000, officials said. "We're just beginning to open that can of worms.

We have yet to empty it out," Burnett said. Hilliard firm may not have filed return Baby From Page 9A the baby to the same number. Candidates for mayor and city council will have another way to present themselves to the public at an election debate Aug. 19 at the Oxford Civic Center.

The event, organized by Oxford resident Lynn Marian, will allow candidates four minutes for opening and closing remarks as well as a minute to answer a randomly selected question. She said she modeled it after a forum at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce during the Conference From Page 9A boy network cycle. To do that, we need to have more women involved in the process." Brenda Roberts, a professor of nursing at JSU, helped to organize this region's first training session. Ms. Roberts said she had attended a training session in Montgomery and wanted to give her local peers a chance to have the same experience.

"It teaches you the way to go about being invited (to an appointment) plus the responsibilities and general obligations," said Ms. Roberts; who plans to eventually campaign for an appointment in a health-related field. "I am really fired up. The networking is fabulous." The city's current eight-year-old water and sewage-treatment plant provides water and sewage treatment for about 20 percent of Oxford residents. Other residents use septic tanks. Smith said the new plant should reach 80 percent to 85 percent of the population, but he wasn't sure yet which homes would receive the service.
