One man died and 21 were injured when a race car crashed into a pit area at Stockton 99 Speedway. Driver Ben Twisselman hit a retaining wall after losing control coming out of a turn during Saturday night's race. His car skidded over a chain-link safety fence and landed in a pit area, witnesses said, but he was uninjured.

Track officials identified the victim as Modesto resident Rene Bourgois, 34, a member of driver Mike David's pit crew. It was the first fatality at Stockton 99 Speedway in 47 years. The crash will be investigated by NASCAR and law enforcement officials. NAZARETH, Pa. Nigel Mansell is an expert on making adjustments.

The 40-year-old Briton made the adjustment from Formula One, where he was the reigning champion, to the Indy car circuit, where all the cities and venues and most of the people were new to him. Next came the adjustment to oval racing, something totally foreign to a man raised on traditional road courses. Finally, there was the adjustment Sunday at Nazareth Speedway. Mansell worked with an ill-handling car until it got right, winning the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix and the 1993 PPG Cup championship. Mansell, who had tears in his eyes after climbing from the cockpit of his Ford Cos-worth-powered Lola, joined Emerson Fittipaldi of Brazil and teammate Mario Andretti as the only drivers to win both Formula One and Indy car titles.

Olympics MONTE CARLO, Monaco Anita DeFrantz, the only American member of the IOC, says she will take human rights into consideration when she votes on the host city for the 2000 Games. But DeFrantz says she will cast her vote free of the political pressure applied by the U.S. Congress and other groups opposed to Beijing's Olympic bid. China's human rights record has emerged as a major issue as the International Olympic Committee prepares to vote Thursday for the 2000 host city. There are five cities in the race, with Beijing considered one of the favorites.

"I always consider, as part of my moral compass, human rights and civil rights, DeFrantz said Sunday. "It's a principle of the Olympic movement. We are about people." MELBOURNE, Australia Beijing should not be awarded the 2000 Olympics because of China's mistreatment of animals, Australia's Royal Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said today. The society's national president Hugh Wirth cited the example of bile being collected from caged bears for use in traditional Chinese medicine. BERLIN Anti-Olympics protesters smashed windows early today at three branch offices of a bank that's one of the main sponsors of the city's bid for the Games in the year 2000, Berlin police said.

The militant activists left behind anti-Olympic flyers at the offices of the Berliner Bank, police said in a statement to news media. No one was injured. Police said they had turned over the investigation to a special squad in charge of probing terrorist actions. Last week, anti-Olympic protesters set off a series of small bombs in Berlin and Rostock. On Saturday, 15,000 opponents of holding the Games in Berlin marched through the German capital.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the site for the 2000 Summer Olympics on Thursday. SALES REP Frost remains hot Associated Press COAL VALLEY, 111. David Frost's colleagues say he has entered the upper echelon of the PGA Tour by defending his Hardee's Golf Classic championship a week after winning the Canadian Open. Frost was called "possibly the hottest player in the world" by D.A. Weibring, turned in a 14-under 266 at Oakwood Country Club on Sunday but still lost by seven strokes the widest victory margin on the tour this year.

Frost's 72-hole total of 259 was the lowest on the tour this year. "David has the whole package: driving accuracy, good iron play, nice work around the greens and great putting," Weibring said. Frost, of South Africa, shot a 6-under 64 Sunday in finishing a record 21 -under for 72 holes. The previous mark was 19-under by Blaine McCallister in 1988. Weibring, a two-time champion of this tournament, and Payne Stewart, a winner in 1982, tied for second.

Weibring closed with a 69 and Stewart, warming up for next week's Ryder Cup in England, had a 65. By winning the Canadian and the Hardee's in succession, Frost became the first player on the PGA Tour to win in consecutive weeks while repeating as a tournament winner since Johnny Miller in 1975. "I couldn't put any pressure on David," Weibring said. "What we saw today was great golf by possibly the hottest player in the world. "1 needed a recording of 'nice shot, David' because that's what I kept saying to him all day." Or take this assessment by Kenny Perry, who played with Frost on his final round in Canada.

"One of the prettiest rounds I ever saw," Perry said. "He didn't miss a single shot all day." But Perry said Frost is more than just a hot golfer. "David is one of the better putters on our tour," Perry said Saturday night, considering his chances of overtaking Frost in the final round. "He has one of the better short games out here. He has lots of ball control.

And he plays within himself." Statistics support the praise heaped on Frost. Frost ranks 4th in putting, 5th in scoring, 4th in converting birdie opportunities and 6th in breaking par among the leaders of the PGA Tour. The $180,000 Hardee's victory check lifts Frost's 1993 total earnings to $831,967 among the top 10 on the tour. Frost doesn't shrink from the accolades. "I work very hard and I'm very dedicated to what I do," Frost said.

"Golf 1s the thing 1 do best and I want to take advantage of the chance to get to the top. I wouldn't say I'm there, but I feel I can compete with anyone out there on any day." Swept into the wreck were Jeff Gordon and Rick Mast. "I mashed the gas and took off, and he (Stricklin) didn't go," said Wallace, who won his season-leading seventh NASCAR Winston Cup Series victory.

"I got into him as I went into third gear. Something slowed him, and then I saw all of 'em sliding across the track." Rudd said of Wallace's bump, "That was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen in my life." Countered Wallace: "That's expected out of Ricky. We're in a big boys' sport, and I'm a big boy. I didn't get upset and whine when I got barrel-rolled 16 times at Talladega." Wallace was referring to a Winston 500 last-lap crash in May that left him with a broken right wrist and concussion. Rudd also returned to the race after repairs.

On Lap 486, he was ordered off the track for trying to block Wallace. On Lap 492, Earnhardt got a stop-and-go penalty for the same thing. Wallace led 194 of the first 217 laps but lost two laps when he slowed but not enough for a pit stop and was forced to go around again. "I had a tire going down on the backstretch," said Wallace. "I couldn't get to the pit, and I thought our chances were shot for the day.

But with all the yellows, we were able to get the laps back." Wallace made up half the deficit on Lap 299 on a restart, passing Schrader. He got the other lap back on the restart after the controversial crash. The tire checks put him back in the lead. Waltrip said the yellow to check tires on Lap 476 cost him the race. "Doggone, we didn't need that," Waltrip said.

"We were pulling away. They should have let the race finish without that last one." The caution may have worked the opposite for Wallace. "Darrell was running awfully good, and our front end was really tight," he said. "I told the crew guys to drop the air pressure (from 50 pounds to about 43) in the right front tire to make it stick better." "I'm going to be relentless in the points race. Drive my guts out.

Turn the extra RPM. I'm optimistic. We've got all my great race tracks coming up." -a company you can trust Security South Mortgage Annlston. AL 208-237-7771 1-600-944-0996 PAWN 113 E. 9th St.

After angering rivals who blamed him for a controversial crash, Rusty Wallace kept coming from two laps down Sunday to win the Splitfire 500 at Dover Downs for a season-leading seventh NASCAR Winston Cup Series victory. Among those involved in the accident was Dale Earnhardt, whom Wallace is chasing for the circuit's championship.

"I don't know what Rusty was thinking," said Earnhardt, who finished 27th after extensive repairs to his heavily damaged Chevrolet. His lead in the standings dropped from 284 points to 181 over Wallace with six races left. Wallace, in a Pontiac, took the checkered flag just 0.41 seconds in front of Chevrolet's Ken Schrader before 86,000 people at the track known as "The Monster Mile. Also finishing on the lead lap were Darrell Waltrip, Chevy; Dale Jarrett, Chevy; Harry Gant, Chevy; Jimmy Spencer, Ford; Bobby Labonte, Ford; and Terry Labonte, Chevy. Morgan Shepherd and Jimmy Spencer completed the Top 10 in Fords.

The race was slowed by a track-record 16 caution periods mostly because of accidents blamed on crews lowering tire pressure for improved handling. Three cautions were for mandatory tire checks. The yellow flags covered 103 of the 500 laps and produced an average speed of 100.334 mph, the slowest at Dover Downs since the track became part of the NASCAR tour in 1969. The race took four hours 59 minutes. Among the others who crashed: Mark Martin, Ernie Irvan, Geoff Bodine, Phil Parsons, Todd Bodine, Rick Wilson, Derrike Cope, Michael Waltrip and Jimmy Horton.

Wallace wrested the lead from Darrell Waltrip on Lap 480, just after the last of the tire checks, and stayed ahead the rest of the way. The wreck that could prove pivotal in the points race occurred on Lap 381 during a restart off the 13th caution period. Wallace, still down a lap, hit the back of Hut Stricklin, who smashed into Earnhardt and Ricky extras. 880wk. M-F, 7am 8 Bruguera, No.

"This area really wants to succeed because there is a lot of questions out there about the Southeast and whether we are capable of putting these Games on." Despite worries about the city's image, the vast majority of those polled still believe it's good that Atlanta is staging the Olympics. Despite assurances from officials that the Games will be fully funded from private sources, 69 percent said they believe their taxes will go up to help pay for the Olympics. Thirty-eight percent said they were willing to pay higher taxes for such Olympics-related city improvements as parks and pedestrian malls.

The poll, conducted for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and published in Sunday editions, found that many area residents are concerned about how the city will perform on the world stage in 1996. "If we louse this up, people are going to be laughing at us," said Mary Virginia Schildmeyer, a Snellville resident who participated in the survey. 6, 13, ZQ, 1383 Player struck early in winning his first Senior PGA Tour event in two years. Player recorded his 18th senior title on Sunday when he birdied the first five holes and went on to shoot a 6-under-par 66 in the final round of the Senior Golf Classic. He finished with a 14-under 202 for the three rounds in posting a three-stroke victory at Kearney Hill Links. "What a start!" said Player, who hadn't won since taking the Royal Caribbean Classic in 1991. "I phoned my son (Wayne) last night.

He gave me a little tip and J.C. Snead did, too. Those two gave significant help in what I did." Snead, who finished seven strokes back at 209, told Player he was moving forward too much on his swing while Wayne reminded him to make a complete backswing. But it was Player's putting on the first five holes that drew attention. "He did so well at the start it kind of froze the rest of us out," said Dale Douglass, who shot a 69 on the final day and finished second at 205.
