By HOYT HARWELL Associated Press Writer MONTEVALLO (AP) Holland Floyd is in the chips 250 tons of wood chips in a silo. The chips ground and blended to a specified size by a supplier cost $12 a ton and Floyd burns an average of three tons an hour in a new steam plant built on an old garbage dump and kudzu patch. It is a bargain, however, he said.

The steam is used to cool or heat most of the buildings at the University of Montevallo where Floyd, a 40-yfar-pld former basketball player at the University of Alabama, is the physical plant -director. Until the plant went on line Tuesday, the achool was paying the city $450,000 a year for natural gas. Floyd' said the plant, built with low-interest government loans, will lower the school's heating and cooling bill about 30 percent. "Money has been tight the last few years and this is going to' relieve us a little bit," he said. He said the school paid $10,000 for gasoline in July 1975 and paid $47,000 for a smaller amount this July.

"We looked for alternate energy," he said. "A tim-berman suggested that with ail the fuel at sawmills in the area, we ought to look at that. "We had two independent feasibility studies and both came back positive." The school gbt a $1.2 million, 40-year loan at 3 percent interest two years ago from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Planning the new steam plant took a year and building it took another. Meanwhile, Montevallo got another HUD loan, for $328,000, to install a central energy control system for all the air-conditioning and heating in the residence halls and to put other classrooms on line.

After that came a $500,000 grant from the Department of Energy to replace lines and modify the heating systems. The steam plant largely replaces a system built in 1930. 59 62 75 60 66 54 66 63 74-21 cdy cdy rn 61 Clr cdy 01 clr clr 92 71 i 75 100 73 68 II 67 IS 15 92 14, 13 95 77 77 74 II 51 47 61 55 59 56 50 62 60 69 69 55 57 clr clr clr clr clr cdy cdy cdy cdy AROUND THE STATE AROUND THE NATION -93-j 73 Huntivllle-Decatur Muscle Shoals ANNISTON Gadjden Sioux 'Fails HI La Pre Otlk 65 44 clr 17 60 .04 Cdy 62 04 clr .63 cdy "74 2.26 rn 83 dv cir cdy 5 rn eirminjiwm" Tuscaloosa 1 Montgomery Seima Dothan Mobile St Louis St P-Tampa St Ste Marie Spokane Syracuse" Topeka Tucson Tulsa Washlngtn "Wichita 76 17 61 13 64 71 95 91 15 90 12 53 12 64 70 62 7 74 14 64 cdy clr clr clr cdy clr cd clr clr clr .01 cdy cdy cdy clr .02 cdy Albany Albuque Amarlllo Anchorage Ashevllle Atlanta Atlante Cty Austin Baltimore Billings Bismarck Boise Boston Browhsvlle Buffalo Burlington Casper 66 60 LAKE LEVELS Temperatures indicate previous 16 p9 elr 91 75 .13 cdy Smith 303.03.
