Welfare checks redesigned MONTGOMERY (AP) Welfare recipients won't get their customary pink checks in January.

Instead, they will get lavender slips. The state has been mailing pink checks In brown envelopes to 80,000 households, but it is switching to lavender envelopes, Pensions and Security Commissioner Gary Cooper said Monday. The cover tears off the envelope and the check is on the inside back cover of the envelope, he said. Cooper said the change in checks was made to conform to the check-writing and mailing system of the state comptroller, who now issues checks for the public welfare agency. It also was done to save time spent stuffing envelopes, he said.

Checks to 16,000 individuals receiving aid to the aged, blind and disabled usually are mailed pn the first of the month, but Cooper said they would be mailed late In January because state workers are off Jan. 1-4. Payments to 63,000 familes receiving Aid to Dependent Children should be mailed Jan. 10, he said. Hospital wants information Attorneys for Jacksonville Hospital and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Alabama have been asked to present arguments for or against having a lawsuit heard in federal district court.

The lawsuit was filed by the hospital last fall in Calhoun County Circuit Court to seek reimbursement of $262,960 in capital-related interest expenses and depreciation costs incurred prior to July 1979. Blue Cross-Blue Shield, the defendants in the suit, have filed a motion asking that the suit be heard in federal court, and the hospital has filed a motion asking (hat the suit be remanded to circuit court. U.S. District Judge James Hancock presided over a hearing Monday on the hospital's remand motion, and asked attorneys for both sides to deliver written arguments for and against the federal court jurisdiction by Jan. 6, according to James Mason, Jacksonville Hospital administrator.

Spokesmen for Blue Cross-Blue Shield had not heard the result of the hearing by late Monday. Blue Cross-Blue Shield has argued that its contract with Jacksonville Hospital does not obligate it to pay costs incurred before the hospital received its assurance of need certificate from health planning officials. The hospital received the certification in November 1979. County approves King holiday MONTGOMERY (AP) The county where Martin Luther King Jr. rose to international fame by leading the Montgomery bus boycott will observe his birthday for the first time next month. The newly integrated Montgomery County Commission voted 3-2 Monday to give its employees a holiday Jan. 15 in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

The vote came In the wake of a week-long 25th an-; niversary celebration of the bus boycott, which began Dec. 1955, four days after police arrested black seamstress Rosa Park for refusing to give her bus seat to a white man. King was the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church until the boycott pushed him into the forefront of the civil rights movement. Commissioners John Knight and Frank Bray, who last month became the first blacks to serve on the commission, joined newly elected white Commissioner Joel Barfoot in passing the holiday resolution. Veteran white Com-'.

missioners Mack McWhorter and Bill Joseph opposed it. Several times since King was gunned down in Memphis, 12 years ago, the Alabama Legislature has considered and killed resolutions making his birthday a state holiday.
