14B The Anniston Star Friday, April 7, 1989 Indictment ent outlines 9 counts against Martin By Mike Dorning Star Staff Writer TALLADEGA The head of Talladega County's narcotics unit has been selling drugs at least since December, according to a ninecount grand jury indictment unsealed Thursday. Lt. Mike "Bubbles" Martin sold marijuana, crack and other forms of cocaine while working a as a deputy in the Talladega County Sheriff's Department, the indictment charges. Martin, 34, has already been charged with selling a total of 33 grams of cocaine to an informant during two meetings federal agents taped in March. The indictment also charges Martin with distributing 11 grams of crack and with distributing an unspecified amount of marijuana.

U.S. Attorney Frank Donaldson said this morning the alleged crack sale took place in December. Donaldson would not say whether Martin sold drugs seized in police raids. Martin was one of the narcotics investigators who testified in a Shelby County trial last month that was temporarily halted when 24 grams of cocaine were discovered missing from the evidence. All of the people in the courtroom were searched for the cocaine, but Martin had already left when the drugs were discovered missing and was not searched.

The cocaine was never recovered. IN ADDITION to the four drug distribution charges, the indictment charges Martin with one count of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and four counts of using a telephone to facilitate a felony. FBI agents found cocaine in Martin's car trunk when they called him to their Birmigham office under the pretense of a meeting about an undercover drug operation, according to a sworn complaint. Martin had phoned an informant earlier in the day with an offer to sell him cocaine, the complaint alleges. Martin, currently free on a $10,000 The docket bond, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of any of the charges.

An April 13 arraignment date has been set on the charges, and a trial before U.S. District Judge James scheduled for June 5. "Defense attorney Steve 4dcock was not available this morning. Recovered pistol tied to Oxford shooting OXFORD Oxford police say they have recovered a pistol used in the shooting death of an Oxford man, police said. The weapon was recovered Tuesday night at the Oxford home of a friend of the 16-year-old who told police he shot his stepfather on a dare.

The teen-ager, whose name has not been released because he is a juvenile, told police he shot Thomas A. Daugherty, 31, after the man dared him to during an argument. The teen buried Daugherty's body in the backyard of the family's 2130 Glover St. home in the Cheaha Acres II subdivision, police said. The stepson, who was arrested on a murder charge Tuesday night, told police he had given the gun to a friend who lived nearby.
