Culpepper completed 13 of 28 passes for 299 yards, including TD passes of 72 and 49 yards to Burley on the Golden Knights' first two series of the second half. Burley, a junior-college transfer, made eight catches for 231 yards. The Knights, playing their second Division I-A season, were hurt by 17 penalties for 122 yards. MISSISSIPPI 23, SMU 15 At Oxford, freshman Duece McAllister rushed for 92 yards and kept alive a late touchdown drive with second effort for Mississippi. Ole Miss (2-0) built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Alishma Alexander's 4-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter proved important.

McAllister set the score up by converting athird-and-6 from the 10. Stewart Patridge dumped a pass to McAllister, who ran into a wall of defenders and appeared a couple of yards short of a first down. But instead of going down, McAllister continued driving his legs and pushing forward, getting the additional yards necessary for the first down. Alexander scored two plays later and gave Ole Miss a 20-7 lead with 12:27 left. SMU, which lost its debut under coach Mike Cavan, wasn't out of contention until a onside kick attempt failed after a last-minute touchdown.

First Quarter McNown tackled in end zone, 57 interception return (Hall kick), Second Quarter Associated Press BATON ROUGE. La Kevin Faulk scored three touchdowns in the first half as No. 10 LSU overcame numerous penalties and mistakes to rout Texas-El Paso 55- 3 Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Faulk, who gained 84 yards on 12 carries, left the game two minutes into the third quarter after pulling his left hamstring on a 40-yard run. It was the most points scored by LSU in a season opener since 1930.

Texas-El Paso lost its eighth straight game, going back to last year's 2-9 season. Two mistakes by Texas-El Paso and two touchdowns by Faulk put LSU up 14-0 just 8:05 into the game. Texas-El Paso fumbled on its third play and LSU defensive end Mike Sutton recovered on the Miners' 20-yard line. Faulk gained six yards on LSU's first play and then ran for a 14-yard touchdown. On UTEP's second possession, Craig Strickland was intercepted by Cedric Donaldson, who returned it 22 yards.

Five plays later, Faulk scored on a 4-yard run. Herb Tyler, who completed 14 of 1 7 for 2 1 1 yards, hit Larry Foster for a 32-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 in the first quarter. Tyler left in the third quarter and was replaced by Bryan Sparacino, who completed 3 of 6 passes for 37 yards. Foster had seven receptions for 123 yards. Faulk gave LSU a 28-0 halftime lead on a 1 -yard touchdown run with 2:22 left in the second quarter.

Strickland completed 4 of 13 for 33 yards and threw one interception. He shared time at quarterback with John Rayborn, who completed 8 of 21 for 68 yards with two interceptions, and Rocky Perez, who came on in the final five minutes and was 0-for-2. LSU was penalized 13 times for 112 yards and fumbled six times, losing three. One penalty nullified a 56- yard touchdown on a punt return by Foster in the third quarter. Riddle: Back in From Page 1C Which meant Riddle one of only five Tide players to rush for 1,000 yards refused to pout.

He says he knew two months ago he'd miss the opener, yet his preseason work ethic was widely praised by the coaching staff for its stamina and example. Simply, Alabama's best football player improved himself. Even though he knew he would miss the first game. "I like how he's handled it," said Ivy Williams, Alabama's running backs coach. "He didn't walk around on his lip.

He did his job. He got back on the first team. "That's what I expected out of him. He's done that ever since he's been here." Williams, whose no-nonsense approach has hardly waned during his three years on Alabama's staff, admits Riddle could have expected preferential treatment because of his status. It would have been natural.

In fact, Williams said, that expectation likely existed for a while. "In part, he thought he'was going to wake up the next day and everybody was going to forget about it or deal with it at the end of the year," 24 pass from Manning Irom Manning), 9:35. pass from Manning (Hall kick), Sailer 44, 0:00 Associated Press GAINESVILLE, Fla. With each of his seven touchdown passes in the first half, Doug Johnson sent a subtle message the Fun 'N' Gun offense of No. 2 Florida isn't dead yet.

A week after a dismal debut, Johnson tied a school record with seven touchdown passes in the first half and the Gators scored their most points in 84 years in an 82-6 victory over Central Michigan. It was just the kind of game Florida needed heading into its Sept. 20 showdown with No. 3 Tennessee, but coach Steve Spurrier warned the Gators not to let tt go to their heads. "It won't be that easy anymore for us, I can assure our guys that," Spurrier said.

"This kind of game can hurt you if you don't keep it in perspective. It's not that great for us just better than the one last week." Spurrier spent a week hounding his offense after a 21-6 victory over Southern Miss, the Gators' worst showing in a season opener since 1989. And even though Florida (2-0) had Central Michigan badly out-manned, he managed to find some positives. "You've got to get in the habit of going up and down the field and scoring points," he said. That wasn't a problem against the Chippewas (1-1).

Johnson, 17-of-34 for 231 yards last week, was 17-of-28 for 310 yards in the first half. He threw three touchdown passes to fullback Terry Jackson, two to Jamie Richardson and one each to Jacquez Green and and fullback Rod Frazier for a 56-3 lead. His seven TDs tied the record set by Terry Dean in a 70-21 victory over New Mexico State in 1994. Dean threw all of his touchdowns in the first half, too. "I don't go out trying to tie records.

I'm out there trying to win the game," Johnson said. "I got last week off my back." He took off his pads at halftime and. turned the game over to Noah Brindise and Canadian freshman Jesse Palmer. They each threw a touchdown, giving Florida a school-record nine TD passes for the game. The previous record was eight, also against New Mexico State.

The 82 points were the most scored since a 144-0 win over Florida Southern in 1913. The Gators, who had 357 yards last week to rank last among Southeastern Conference teams, had 708 yards against the Chippewas. Freshman Bo Carroll rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries, while Fred Taylor had 106 yards on nine carries. "Our offense had something to prove. They had 82 points, so I think they proved something," said cor-nerback Fred Weary.

"You can't really tell how good it is because Central Michigan hasn't played a lot of tough teams. But with two weeks of preparation, I think we'll be ready for Tennessee." MISSISSIPPI ST. 35, KENTUCKY 27 At Starkville, Kentucky sophomore quarterback Tim Couch 'tied a Southeastern Conference record with 39 completions, but Mississippi State's pressure defense recorded five sacks. Chrys Chukwuma scored his third touchdown early in the second half and linebacker Harry Wilson followed moments later with a 52-yard interception return for a TD as Arkansas opened its season with a 28-16 victory over Northeast Louisiana Saturday night.

Chukwuma's 8-yard run made it 21-3 with 1212 minutes to play in the third quarter and came three plays after Melvin Bradley recovA ered a fumble. At that point, Chukwuma had nine carries for 86 yards. Less than three minutes later, JVortheast (1-1) gambled on fourth-and-short at midfield. Bryan Smith, who had two sacks in the first half, pressured Daniel Jeremiah who flipped the ball as he was going down. Wilson grabbed it on the move to make it 28-3.

Northeast made it respectable with two touchdowns in the final eight minutes. Emil Johnson's 49-yard interception return to the 3 set up one score and the recovery of an onsides kick led to the other. It was 28-16 when the Indians recovered another onsides kick, but a fourth-down pass was incomplete at the Arkansas 25. Prior to the season, there was much ado about Arkansas' new offense, but it was the defense that was too much for the Indians. Northeast made only four first downs and 52 yards, including a net 8 rushing, in the first half.

Arkansas produced 186 yards 96 rushing and 90 passing in the first half. It Tide's lineup Williams said. "But Mike (DuBose) told him this is what we're going to do. And in the back of his mind, he thought, 'Yeah, they'd said that Now, I think he's sorry for what happened." Riddle's return for Thursday's game at Vanderbilt (1-0) certainly, will make a difference, though the Tide (1-0) did well without him against Houston. Curtis Alexander and Shaun Alexander combined for 184 yards, giving the Tide ample production at tailback-.

That Riddle will start is no issue. "He was the starter as soon as the Houston game was over," DuBose said. "He's our best running back right now, maybe the best football player on our team. Unless something happens between now and Thursday, he'H start." He'll also take a hard-learned lesson to Nashville, a lesson that may have taught him more than anything else during his standout career. "I don't know if coach was trying to make a point or what," Riddle said.

"But I think guys before they do things, now, they'll think about it. I think it'll open some eyes." With Riddle, at least, it already has. of Calhoun County 22640 in SO attempts last week against Louisville. Couch had the Wildcats on the move again with about four minutes left when he fumbled. After State's Eric Brown popped Couch on a blitz, the ball rolled about 10 yards and was recovered by Greg Favors.

James Johnson scored his second TD from 1 yard out with 1:10 left. The Wildcats converted a fourth-and-17 in the final 10 seconds, but Couch's last-ditch attempt into the end zone from midfield came up short. SOUTH CAROLINA 33, CENTRAL FLORIDA 31 At Columbia, S.C., Anthony Wright threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, helping South Carolina. Wright hit Kerry Hood with two TD passes in the first half, then found Jermale Kelly with a 6-yard scoring toss in the fourth quarter as the Gamecocks (1-0) scored 20 straight points to survive a tough opening test from Central Florida for the second straight year. The Golden Knights (0-2), who took Mississippi to overtime before falling 24-23 last week, used two long scoring passes from Dante Culpepper to Siaha Burley to take a 24-14 lead early in the second half before the Gamecocks rallied.

Wright completed 23 of 40 passes for 267 yards, while Zola Davis had 10 catches for 120 yards.
