His record streak was snapped in 1985, but he led 76 laps en route to a third-place finish in 1986. Also in 1984, Tom Sneva became the fifth driver to lead the race in five straight years, but that streak, too, was broken in 1985. Bob Jenkins was 8 years old hen he first heard the Indiana-alls 500 on the radio. "It was 355, the year Bill Vukovich as killed, and I vividly remem-sr his crash." His interest in racing devel-sed early on. A grade school al's uncle raced at the speed-ay in Richmond, Indiana, here Jenkins was born. The ays watched, him race every riday night. In 1960, Jenkins's father rought him to the Brickyard for le first time.

It was an experience for the 13-sar-old. That particular race, larked by a thrilling duel be-ween Jim Rathmann and odger Ward, still ranks as his ll-time favorite "500." Ironically, via the faint sig-als of an Armed Forces Radio ansmission from Germany, enkins's broadcasting partner day motor racing historian onald Davidson was strain- 1960, Davidson was even more obsessed with the "500." He began writing to Sid Collins In 1962, scrimped to save money for two more years, and in 1 964, at the age of 21, came to Indy. Davidson moved here in 1 965 and has been a valuable part of the broadcast team ever since. He has worked with Collins and both his successors Paul Page, who took over as anchor after Sid gave up in his battle with Lou Gehrig's disease and took his life, and Lou Palmer, who succeeded Page in 1988.

"Sid Collins had a lot of dignity and a real star quality," Davidson said. "His distinctive voice was part of the nostalgia of the He publicly stated that he didn't know a lot about racing, but would surround himself with people who did and call on them often. And what of his new partner? "I think his approach will be more like Sid's than any of the others." Davidson said. "Bob's an orchestrator who seems to work well with others, as he does on the NASCAR races. My guess is that he'll go to the people around the track more.

"Bob's also extremely know-ledgable and not Just about what's current, but about the history of the sport, more than he'll probably ever reveal on the air. I think it'll be a lot of fun to work with him." Jenkins, for his part, is ready to go. "I always wanted this position, and although I can't say I ever believed it really would happen, it was always something I hoped would happen.
