"And now, stay tuned for the greatest spectacle in racing." Soon, Collins himself became an integral part of the event he broadcast, as millions of people around the world became accustomed to experiencing the "500" through his eyes. I was one of them. For me, the ritual began when I was 13.

I'd set my alarm for early in the morning on race day, grab whatever food I could find, then arrange my automobile magazines and pictures all around me on the floor, where I could look at the cars and drivers I heard Sid Collins describing on the radio. For the next four or five hours, my room became the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and I never left my seat, except for a brief dash to the kitchen or bathroom as Sid finished the words, greatest spectacle In racing." Collins, the late Freddie Aga-bashian, Lou Palmer, and the others were in my ear when I first came to the speedway in 1963. Sure, I could see what was in front of me, but without my radio, how else would I know what was going on around the track? It's also part of the tradition of the "500" and after all, tradition is what makes this race unique. The telecast, on the other hand, is an event itself. Make no mistake; Paul Page, Bobby Unser, and Sam Posey are a great team, about as good as you can get, but no matter what insights they bring, no matter how pungent their observations, in television the medium Is the message. Intricate computer graphics and brilliant images from multiple cameras flood our consciousness and overload our senses. It's the nature of the beast.

The telecast is one incredible highlight film with commercials. I always tape it to watch after the race. Jenkins is no stranger to television. In addition to hosting ESPN's popular "Speedweek," he's also served as the lead announcer for ESPN's award-winning coverage of Indy car, NASCAR, and Formula One racing. Does Jenkins worry that the live telecast of the race has shrunk the radio audience? Apparently not.

"Those who listen to us are the millions who visit their relatives on Memorial Day weekend and who have picnics out in their backyard," Jenkins said. "They may watch the start of the race on television now. But listening to the Indy 500 on the radio is something that's very unique in America, and the proud tradition that that broadcast has established over the last 30 years is what I'm so excited about carrying on." The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network was formed in 1952 with Sid Collins as anchor. The network now includes 650 stations throughout the United States and Canada and is heard around the world via the Armed Forces Radio satellites.
