J2 The INDIANAPOLIS STAR', Sunday. May 20. 1990 After 8 years, 'Newhart' says er, 'sayonara' were sure what they would get," Papenfuss said, also crediting Bob Newhart's appeal and the show's efforts "to stay away from cheapness, not pandering to the trends of situation comedies and keeping a steady line of classically true humor." Papenfuss said Newhart had planned to make next season the final one, but a snag developed In the relationship between CBS and MTM, the studio that produces the show. "Bob was thinking that one more season (after this one) would be it. He likes to quit a winner, while It's still high quality.

The economics of doing one more season (created a battle between the two companies). Bob figured. "If it's going to be this much of a hassle, let's Just a stop It Papenfuss explained. Playing an offbeat role like Darryl was interesting, according to Papenfuss. "It is an acting exercise to see how much you can express without having lines.

Relying on lines to get emotions across can be a crutch. In our case, we were expressing things without words," Papenfuss said. Throughout the entire series, the characters and their environment have remained constant. The last episode, which turns that stability upside down, opens while the town Is assembled for a celebration and a Japanese visitor announces he wants to buy the town and turn it Into a golf course. The residents Initially are hesitant but then Jump ship when they are offered $1 million for each of their homes.

When Dick Loudon (Newhart) staunchly refuses to sell the Stratford Inn, he and his wife, Joanna (Mary Frann), are the only original townspeople left. Five years later, all of Loudon's old friends return for a reunion. By this time, the Stratford Inn, which Is stuck In the middle of the 14th fairway on the Tagadachiville Country Club, looks very different. Not only has the inn taken on a Japanese look, but so have Joanna and all of Loudon's employees. The returning townspeople also have changed.

Including the Larry (William Sanderson, right), his brother Darryl (Tony Papenfuss, center) and his other brother Darryl (John Voldstad) get suited up for the final episode of Newhart. By DIANE JOY MOCA LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS Los Angeles For eight seasons, two characters in the CBS situation comedy Newhart have never uttered a word. The show's final episode marks the first time the silent brothers finally say what is on their mind Just one of many surprises on Monday (8:30 p.m., WISH, Channel 8) that give the show's participants a chance to say goodbye. Tony Papenfuss, who never talks while in his role as the dark-haired Darryl No. 1.

had a lot to say about Newhart. which in a land of fly-by-night, one-season series has managed to produce 184 new episodes since its premiere on Oct. 25, 1982. "It was our last time on the set, and the set was different, our last entrance and the costume was different, after wearing the same costume for eight years. It was a little spooky. She runs Into trouble only during the long stretches of the miniseries when Truddi is "normal." Selling real estate or talking to her family, this Truddi is invested with a glib flipness that will remind you all too much of a certain intellectually pretentious barmaid from a sitcom.
