THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1996 E7 Obituaries Catherine S. East was instrumental in starting NOW Dr. Gordon R. Arbuckle taught orthodontics at Indiana University Indiana Society of Orthodontists and of the Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists.

Dr. Arbuckle was a member of several other professional organizations. Including the American Dental Association and the Great Lakes Society of Orthodontics. Dr. Arbuckle earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and later graduated from the IU School of Dentistry.

East, who was Instrumental In forming the National Organization for Women, has died of congestive heart failure at age 80. She died Saturday In Ithaca. N.Y.. where she moved last January after living in the Washington area since 1939. The Washington Post, which reported her death, said that In 1966.

she was largely responsible for persuading the writer Betty Frtedan to found NOW. Friedan has been quoted as saying that East was the "valiant, incorruptible woman who cajoled me Into the act of starting NOW" and was the "midwife to the birth of the women's movement." She held a number of jobs in the federal government, including positions with the Civil Service Commission and the Labor Department, and held senior staff positions with every presidential advisory commission on women from 1962 to 1977. Since about 1980, she had lectured and done consulting work. Survivors include two daughters and a brother. WILLIAM LEE PERKINSON, 74.

Plainfield, died Aug. 20. He was a tool and die maker at Union Carbide, Speedway, for 25 years, until 1978. Services: 10 a.m. Aug.

Schoch STAFF MEDICAL WRITER A former Olive Garden employee who contracted hepatitis A did not handle food and therefore posed little or no threat to the restaurant's customers, Marlon County Health Department officials said Friday. The employee, who worked at the Olive Garden at 5515 W. 38th came down with symptoms of the disease shortly before he left Indianapolis to return to college, health officials said.
