Rick Mears made a point of practicing in the heat of the day. Saturday, he burned up the track. The two-time Indy winner sizzled to one- and four-lap qualifying records and for the third time will start from the pole position race day. "We'd been sneaking up on speed all week," Mears said. His qualification times revealed an all-out frontal attack.

Through the first week of practice for this year's Indy 500, Mears squeaked past 210 miles per hour, then 211, and Thursday clocked the week's fastest practice time of 214.694. Barely, an hour after Penske teammate and defending Indy champ Danny Sullivan set one-and four-lap records in the 215 range, Mears cranked up his Pennzoil Z-7 MarchCosworth and scorched the short-lived marks. Mears averaged 216.828 miles an hour for the four-lap record run, nearly a mile-and-half per hour faster than Sullivan's 215.382. Mears' first lap was fastest at 217.581. followed by a 217.124.

Just as his teammate. Rick Mears, pulled away from the pits to begin his qualifying run Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sullivan moved out where Mears could see him and gave him the thumbs-up sign.

Nice touch. Only Sullivan stopped just a little short with his non-verbal communication. He should have added another gesture. Like a goodbye wave.
