Rick Mears made a point of practicing in the heat of the day. Saturday, he burned up the track. The two-time Indy winner sizzled to one- and four-lap qualifying records and for the third time will start from the pole position race day. "We'd been sneaking up on speed all week," Mears said. His qualification times revealed an all-out frontal attack.

Through the first week of practice for this year's Indy 500, Mears squeaked past 210 miles per hour, then 211, and Thursday clocked the week's fastest practice time of 214.694. Barely, an hour after Penske teammate and defending Indy champ Danny Sullivan set one-and four-lap records in the 215 range, Mears cranked up his Pennzoil Z-7 MarchCosworth and scorched the short-lived marks. Mears averaged 216.828 miles an hour for the four-lap record run, nearly a mile-and-half per hour faster than Sullivan's 215.382. Mears' first lap was fastest at 217.581. followed by a 217.124.

216.852 and 215.765. Mears slowest lap. if you can call it that, was exactly one-tenth of a mile per hour faster than Sullivan's best of 215.755. Sitting in qualification line after Sullivan. Mears confessed.

Just as his teammate. Rick Mears, pulled away from the pits to begin his qualifying run Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sullivan moved out where Mears could see him and gave him the thumbs-up sign.

Nice touch. Only Sullivan stopped just a little short with his non-verbal communication. He should have added another gesture. Like a goodbye wave. Because no sooner had Sullivan become the new one and four-lap record holder at the Speedway than he was the old one and four-lap record holder at the Speedway.

Sullivan, the defending Indianapolis 500 champion, ventured onto the track Just before noon Saturday and clicked off a single-lap record of 215.755 and a four-lap standard of 215.382 In his red Miller American March Cosworth. But, in his post-qualifying round of interviews, Danny Boy played the role of prophet, not of fool. There Is no better seat in the house other than the one belonging to Mears, of course. "Rick's about the fastest oval driver I've ever seen, as far as going out there and Just flat going fast, getting the most out of the car and knowing how to run four laps around here, or even 200," Sullivan said. "Rick's the best I've ever seen and when you get to the speeds we're going now. it becomes a matter of who See SULLIVAN Page 4 about the record, I'd better wait to see if It stands," he cautioned. "In my heart.

I want to keep the pole, but Rick's awfully tough." And, on this day, too tough. And too fast. After Mears acknowledged Sullivan's greeting with a high sign, he proceeded to lay his Penske teammate low, wiping out Sullivan's track records and his brief spot on the pole. "Well. I thought all along he'd do It," said Sullivan, moments after watching Mears' rapid run from near the scoring pylon.

Perhaps, that's taking it to extremes, but when the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors gather here today In the Grand Hyatt Hotel (1 to 1:15 p.m., Channel 8) for the NBA's second annual lottery, the last people they want to see are the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Mavericks.
