Joe Garagiola will be starting his fourth season as a teammate tof Vln Scully today when NBC presents Its first 1986 Came of the Week. The New York Mets will meet lhe Philadelphia Phillies In the city of brotherly love and of late sisterly baseball at 1:15 p.m. WTHR (13) will carry the game here. Garagiola. the analyst, and Scully, tne play-by-play man.

have developed a most comfortable relationship. Just like a pitcher and a catcher, or a good double-play combination of shortstop and 6econd baseman." Garagiola told iis In a telephone Interview. "He knows where I'm going. I know where he's going. We have a good feel for each other.

We are good friends. We have dinner together on Friday night. We catch the same plane for the West Coast games. I felt that way with Tony, too." His latter reference was to Tony Kubek. his former partner 'when Garagiola was doing the play-by-play and Kubek the analysis.

There may have been an object lesson for Frank Glfford In Garagiola's reaction to the change In roles. Joe accepted It without any show of protest. "It's really not a case of what you like. It's fittln' Into the groove," Garagiola said. "As an analyst, you sit there and watch the game.

You can watch much more critically than the play-byplay man. Neither can be a bad Job when you have a chance to watch the best game of the week from the best seat In the house." Two men Is definitely enough population In any broadcasting booth In Garagiola's way of thinking. "If you have three men. the play-by-play man Is like Ed Sullivan. He Just smears meat on the dog's nose.

He Is a traffic cop. "We had one World Series, where we had In the booth (Dick) Enberg. (Tony) Kubek. (Bryant) Gumbel, (Ron) Luciano. (Tom) 'Seaver and Garagiola.

If we had had the DH in their day. Ted Williams and Stan Muslal might still be batting. I'm not that much of a purist, think (Commissioner Peter) Ue berroth will retain the status quo. I hope he would devote more Interest to the drug problem than the DH. The DH would not be at the top of my priority list.

But I do wish they could get both leagues to agree to use It or not to use It. But that will never happen. Let's get off the definite' maybe fence." Manadatory drug testing: wish the big cloud of the drug business would be lifted and gone. If I were still playing. I think I would want to be tested If I wasn't on any Junk.
