SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1985 -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- UB The Reader's Column Introducing the hotel with no hotel rooms. By BECKY WALTER Emtesy QUESTION: I've been reading a book called Mysteries of the Unexplained. In it is a story concerning an Indianapolis company. Dowling Construction Co. was working on a job with a 5-ton wrecking ball.

When workers left at the end of the day, the ball was hanging 200 feet in the air from a crane. However, the next morning when the workers returned, they discovered the ball had disappeared. Is this story true? If so, when and where did it happen? Was the ball ever found? L.K., Cicero ANSWER: It's true, according to Loran Dowling, owner of the firm. His workers were tearing down and erecting a Boys' Club on the Indianapolis Southside during the summer of 1974. Just like your book says, the huge ball was hanging about 200 feet in the air from a crane at the end of the work day and was gone eight hours later when workers returned.

The crane didn't appear to have been tampered with, Dowling said. The ball was never recovered. MDOllS JJJLJlVldl North, QUESTION: When will the tunnel between the Statehouse and the Embassy Suites be completed? J.N., Indianapolis ANSWER: A portion of the tunnel already is open between the Statehouse and One North Capitol, explained John Labaj, deputy administrator of the Division of Economic and Housing Development. Construction is in progress in the basement of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, which is the final link between the Statehouse and the Embassy Suites. Labaj said that link will be completed "probably by early 1986." QUESTION: I've seen some bumper stickers recently and would like to know where I can get one.

They say "Caution Child Inside." As a new mother, I'd like to have one for my car. Can you find out where they're for sale? K.M., Indianapolis ANSWER: The bumper stickers are a public-service item distributed by Peoples Drug Stores to customers who register for the Peoples' "Baby Club" at the pharmacy counter. There is no charge for the bumper sticker or the club. ou get a big living rcxm, perfect for meetings or entertaining. The maker of the "Wrinkles Away" electric clothes steamer is recalling 188,000 steamers that may pose a danger of burning users, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported.

The Franzus Co. of New York initiated the recall of steamers Model WA-111 and WA222, made between July and December of 1984, after learning that boiling water may spill from the base of the steamers. The firm has received about 50 reports of incidents in which the base of the steamer suddenly separated from the heater assembly, spilling water. Some cases of burns were reported. The steamers, hand held appliances used to eliminate wrinkles in clothes, have a beige or brown plastic nozzle, brown plastic cylinder body and electric cord.

The recalled items can be identified by the model number on the plastic base cap, along with the company name. They sold nationwide at prices ranging from $22.95 to $26.95. Newer units with the model numbers WA-111SE and WA-222SE are not involved in the recall. The company is offering to replace the recalled products with a new unit with backup safety catch. Owners of the recalled steamers were advised to stop using them immediately.

To obtain the replacement package the unit, along with the consumer's name and address on a separate sheet of paper in the package, and send it to the Franzus Dept. 819, 352 Park Avenue South. New York. N.Y. 10010.

According to Dixie Carter, a tour guide for the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, the ordinance prohibited any building on the Circle from being built taller than the Soldiers and Sailors Monument 89 feet. This was done to prevent surrounding buildings from casting shadows on the monument. The ordinance 19 still on the books. Built In 1929, the Art Deco building also displays an interest in Egyptian dnslgn that flourished following the discovery of King' Tut tomb In 1922.

The "stair steps" are set back in a pyramid effect and many of the decorative screens and bronze gnilwork features feeds, Egyptian flowers, animals and the Egyptian sun god. Havft a qimtlon?
