That's right.

Mario Andretti was bedeviled at the Indianapolis! Motor Speed ay again. Sunday, the creature reared its head on Lap 154 when Andretti's Lola 800 made contact with Josele Garza's car coming out of Turn Four. Front end damage was sustained by Andretti's car and it finished him for the day, "Garza just pulled right in front of me," Andretti said. "He just changed lanes. I don't know if he was going to come into the pits or even if he knew where he was going or what.

It looked like he was going into the pits. I couldn't stop." Andretti was struggling at the time of the incident with a broken STAR'S SPIKD- AY STAFF exhaust pipe, but was still running. "I think it started to happen around 20 laps." he said. "When I came in for the first stop. I could hear it (the engine) going off.

All of a sudden it changed tone. I never saw the same revs again." Prior to that, though, it looked like the Lola was running lovely. "At the start of the race, the Marches were coming back to us. which was good for me," said Mario. RICK MEARS crew was as quick in the pits as the driver was on the track Sunday en route to victory in the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race The men 'w ho turn the wrenches, change the tires and add the fuel on the winning No. 6 Pennzoil machine needed just 4 minutes, 57 seconds to complete eight pit stops.

That performance was good enough to win a $20,000 prize, courtesy of Purolator Courier, for the crew whose car spent the least amount of time in the pits and finished within 10 laps of the leader. Timing for the contest is calculated from the moment the car enters the entrance to the pits until it leaves the lane. Mears' quickest stop was his fifth 28 seconds; his slowest was his first 45 seconds. The crew for Al Unser Sr. finished second at 5.12.

Third was Al Holbert (544); fourth Michael Andretti (600) and fifth A.J. Foyt (615). GEOFF BRABHAM, who many liked as a dark horse to win the race, went the opposite direction instead. He had the not so dubious distinction of being the first man out of the race when a fuel line broke going down the backstretch on the first lap. "It sprayed fuel everywhere, the engine started to misfire and apparently the fuel was burning the electrical system," said Brabham, who started the race in the middle of Row Three.

"It's just one of those things, I suppose. It's a pity to come here for 30 days and spend 30 seconds racing." FOR ALL OF those who had to wait in line Sunday, the Speedway plays no favorites. About 6:20 a.m.. many of the pit crews were hoping to get a jump on getting their pits ready for the race. Trouble is, the rules say you can't do so until 6:30 a.m.

So around 20 assorted golf carts, tractors and whatevers formed a nice little traffic jam just outside of Gasoline Alley while waiting to get in. To add some authenticity, they honked horns and cussed. Just like being on 16th Street. SALE MAY 28-THRU JUNE 2, 1984 VvVv date material on the monitors. We were able to supply information as quickly or as frequently.

"We were less frequent in supplying information to the public because we had to keep up with what we were doing." Graham did not know what went wrong with the system. "I probably won't until Monday or Tuesday," he said. "We have to be concerned with our recap-right now (the official results won't be posted until 8 a.m. today) and I won't be able to check it out until after that." This was the third race in which the Dataspeed system had been used here "and about the 20th or 25th time" USAC had used it overall, according to Graham. For the first time here, though, the system was hooked up the various scoring towers around the track.

And in that regard it was in trouble almost from the start. At one point in the first 10 laps, the scoreboards showed Kevin Co-gan. who started in the ninth row, running second. The lap count was in trouble most of the way with the main stretch scoring tower at one point showing consecutive readings of 120 laps. 129 and 137.

"We had difficulty keeping the lap count right." said Graham. "We had difficulty communicating with them Ithe scoring tower people)." DAVE OVERPECK The Speedway's computerized scoring system failed about a third of the way through Sunday's 500-Mile Race. "It ceased to produce useful results." said Art Graham, director of scoring for the United States Auto Gub. "As soon as we saw we had a problem, we went to manual scoring immediately." Actually, the scoring goes on continuously as a backstop to the computerized system. "In a sense, we continued to work on the Dataspeed (computer system! throughout the race," said Graham, "but we went with the manual for the information we were putting out." Graham, who generally is recog nized as the best in the business, said the computer failure created no problems as far as scoring the race was concerned, per se.

"In order to score, we need scoring cards on the individual cars and serial scoring." he said. "We continued to produce those." Asked if the computer break down could have had any effect on the provisional posted finish. Gra ham said. "Naw. I wouldn't say so.

The screen Ithe TV monitor at tached to the computerized system) would have said the same thing." THE PROBLEMS produced by the computer breakdown were basically physical, said Graham. Lebanon St LEBANON, IN. INDPLS. PHONE 873-5221-873-5149 See Wink Jaggen and Tom Harris "People you can Trust" Frustrated Foyt unsure about 1985 When Travelers Need Cash Away From Home They Look For The 4 Symbol ly ASSOCIATED PRESS A.J. Foyt says he doesn't know whether his record string of 27 consecutive appearances in the India napolis 500 will be extended in 1985. Foyt, 49, the only four time champion in Indianapolis history, finished sixth in this year's race after qualifying in 12th position.

The frustrated Texan, who was never in contention, was asked about 90 minutes after the race whether he would be coming back to the track next May and replied soberly: "I don't know. I ain't gonna lie about it. I really don't know. I hoped we'd have finished better this year, but I really don't know. I really don't know." Foyt said he was disappointed because his car, though it was running strongly at the end, never challenged for the lead.

"THE FIRST 150 miles or so we pushed the front end and that got me down. The last 200 miles, we ran as quickly as we could and I think we were going as fast as anybody out there. It's just a shame we had to get so far down at the beginning. "I softened the springs too much, too, because we had thought the weather was going to be hotter than it turned out. And on top of that, I had the flu.

I've had it for the past few days." Asked what his immediate racing plans were, Foyt said, "We'll probably go to LeMans next, and we may run some CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams Indy-car) races, but I'm not sure right now. I'll have to sit down with my team and decide in the morning." Foyt won the 500 in 1961, 1964, 1967 and 1977. He has 67 Indy-car victories, far more than any other driver, but in 1983, his only Indy-car race was at Indianapolis. He ran six times on the Indy-car circuit in 1982 and has run in a handful of Grand National stock car and sports car endurance races in the last two years.
