PAGE POUR. THE DAILY NEWS, HUNTINGDON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1947. HORT'S PORTS By PHIL SHORT Dally Neivs Editor We've attended quite a few City Baseball League meetings over a period of half a decade and ths discussions that transpire in the room filled with pungent cigar and cigarette smoke don't change much as the sessions roll by. are always a couple of carbon-copy Durochers and Mac- Fhails in the group wno invariably cook up a lot of rhubarb. The proposals for the 1947 season drew plenty of arguments when the loop met for the second time this year on Monday night.

WUJi tho smoke providing a of protection lor some of I debaters, tihe wonts jionrcd profusely from the iips ot the gentle gents who form tiie by-liuvs of thfe league. The playoff program was kicked all over the No. Fire Hall with the final decision! hanging' in balance. We knew lit-! tie more after the meeting than before. Thoughts on the playoffs' were divided to the extent that it'll take quite a ie.iv meetings to rea.ch a favorable decision.

Never-' theless, much was accomplished in a shorter period of time ii'lien the boys opened the meeting and viewed the schedule. It was unani- motiK when the representatives voted to start tiie loop schedule on May 19. While the schedule will run less than 3 mouths, teams' managers promised a figiit down 1o the wire regardless of What type of playoff will be, used. The discussion on the playoffs' ranged from midnight double-! headers to early morning contests augmented by the serving of breakfast food at the end of the second inning. Ail jokes aside though, the boys acted wisely in deferring their decision until the! next meeting.

The division of ideas on the playoffs hovered around a split season with the winners of each cycle meeting for the title and the Shaughnessy system. After a heated discussion on the two set-ups, the boys did what come naturally--turned out the lights and went home. STEWART REMAINS BASEBALL MENTOR AT HUNTINGDON HI Contrary to previous reportb, Jim Stewart, Jr. will continue as Huntingdon High baseball coach this year, it was announced today. It had been reported that Bob Wear would have charge of the squad. Wear has been directing the tossers for the past week in the absence of Stewart, who has been tied up with Bother duties. Stewart, known'as the Gentleman Jim of Huntingdon High baseball, will be coaching the Bearcats for the Sth straight season.

He took over in 1940 when Dick Eisenman moved to Williams port. His record during the seven previous seasons is 40 wins and 14 losses. Stewart resumed his coaching work yesterday. He told The Daily News that the Bearcats should be in shape to open the season Friday against Warriors Mark High in a Bi-County League scrap on the Franklin Township team's field. Negotiations are now under way to try to arrange the game for Thursday, but there was little likelihood that it would be switched.

Taking advantage of every opportunity to get outdoors, the Warriors Mark High nine has been drilling daily in preparation for the season lid-lifter on Friday. The Indians, under Coach Gilliland, open the campaign with a Bi-County League test against Huntingdon on the home field. Warriors Mark played an informal schedule last year, meeting Alexandria and port Matilda in a series of games. ftRBY NINE LOSES TO FT.
