The FCC approved the building of the station and also transferred the majority ownership of the station to Anacomp Inc. from the Mel Simon interests, according to Channel 59 President Christopher Duffy. The Simons will retain a sizeable minority participation in the company- IN ADDITION, the FCC has approved the call letters WPDS-TV and a change of the corporate name to USA Communications Inc. from Indianapolis Television Corp.

The new corporate title will better reflect the company's purpose of being a total communications organization involved, not only in television, but in such 21st century systems as teletext, videotex and other computer-driven technologies, Duffy said. Channel 59 has leased the former Channel 20 studios at 1440 North Meridian Street and is in process of setting up offices there. As a hot weather project, Channel 8's entire on-the-air news team is going "on the road" and moving about Central Indiana for vignettes about Indiana counties. Accompanying them are camera crews shooting live on location footage of popular events and famous landmarks which identify the areas. MIKE AHERN.

The area covered will include Monroe, Bartholomew, Clinton, Montgomery, Delaware, Jennings, Jackson, Howard and Grant counties. The reports will be aired throughout the broadcast day and will begin Monday with Monroe County. They will catch fairs, festivals, town celebrations, and bits of history throughout the Hoosier heartland.

He has made headlines recently with his efforts to get an USFL franchise for Indianapolis. Duffy and Anacomp President Ron Palamera head a group of investors who are attempting to bring the Boston Breakers team here. "We're interested in sports franchises, including baseball and other sports, much like Ted Turner," Duffy has been quoted as saying. He was referring to the owner of Atlanta's Channel 17 "superstation" which broadcasts games of the National League Atlanta Braves and NBA Atlanta Hawks nationally over cable television.

"I hate to refer to it as 'studio but what is happening boils basically down to this," the former general manager of Channel 13 has explained.
