THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SKC. -PAGE 3 Butler Ends Opening-Game Famine sv 1 SUNDAY, SCI'TKMRKR 15, 1974- 1 A. Bulldogs Dump Wayne Gridders By HARRY RIMER Butler's Bulldogs, under the guidance of junior quarterback Billy Lynch, ended a nine-year drought as winner of a season opening football game yesterday as the Northside gridders squeezed past tricky Wayne State of Detroit, 21-14. Buckeyes Roll Over Gophers Minneapolis lUPI) Tailback Archie Griffin set an all-time Ohio State rushing record and scored one touchdown yesterday as the No. 1 Buckeyes downed the pesky Minnesota Gophers, 34-19.

Statistics Griffin, who rushed for more than 100 yards for the 12th straight time, scored the first Buckeye touchdown on a 10-yard run over right tackle early into the fourth quarter. Ohio State marched 77 yards in the drive on rushing plays. The Gophers got on the scoreboard late In the period when Steve Goldberg booted a 52-yard field goal, a Minnesota record. The kick eclipsed Goldberg's old record of 48-yards against Michigan State two years ago. Lmi.iii.

(AP) Michigan State quarterback Charlie Baggett scored one touchdown and fired a 57-yard pass for another to highlight a 21-point second quarter yesterday and spark the Spartans to a 41-7 victory over Big Ten rival Northwestern. Baggett also hit two 44-yard passes, one to the second quarter to set up his touch Griffin, a 5-9, 182 -pound Junior, rushed for 133 yards in 26 carries to surpass the old record of 2,542 yards set by Jim Otis in 1969.

Griffin broke the school career record on a 14-dash yard run early in the fourth period. The powerful Ohio State offense amassed more than 400 yards as Greene scored two touchdowns and Griffin and fullbacks Pete Johnson and Champ Henson each added one more. Wolverines Down Iowa Sans Franklin Ann Arbor, Mich. (AP) Substitute quarterback Mark Elzinga threw a 10-yard touch-down pass to Gil Chapman nd ran one yard for another pace sixth-ranked Michigan to a 24-7 victory over Iowa "vterday in i Big Ten (College football opener. Fullback Chuck Heater scored the other Michigan touchdown.

The defending co-champion Wolverines played without star quarterback Dennis Franklin, who was suffering from a virus and didn't dress. ELZINGA WAS starter after the surprise announcement on the highly-touted senior Franklin. Elzinga guided Michigan 71 yards in nine plays with the team's first possession and Heater climaxed the drive vyith a 2-yard TD plunge. Elzinga scored on a 1-yard plunge five minutes later to conclude a 10-play march after Don Dufek intercepted a Kob Fick pass at the Iowa 45. The Ha wk 0-11 last year and making their debut under new coach Bob Cum-mings, did a pretty good job of thwarting Michigan's offense most of the rest of the game.

THE TD PASS to Chapmas came at 11:07 of the third quarter. Michigan had marched 63 yards in eight plays. The Wolverines added a 30-yard field goal by Mike Lantry in the fourth quarter. The Hawkeyes averted a shutout when Rod Wellington dove over from the 1 with 0:54 remaining to climax an 80-yard march. Iowa 0 0 0 77 Michigan 14 0 7 142 Mich Heater 1 run (Lantry kick).

Five plays later Wayne State scored as Mike Cahill smashed through the line for the last yard and Guyon tied the score, 14-14. Midway through the final period Butler got the ball on its own 15. Muta and Morelli joined Bob Grenda in advane ing the leather on the ground and Lynch threw in a couple of fine passes to flanker Dave Oliver, plus a 9-yarder to Swi hart to gain first down on the a a s' 5. Grenda got 2 yards in a pair of tries and Muta squirmed to the 1 LYNCH LOOKED over the Wayne State defense and called time.

After conversing with Coach Bill Sylvester he came back and sent Morelli driving over guard for the yard TD to clinch the victory. Ligda's PAT boot was good and Butler finally had ended its opening game victory drought. Butler's defense, which was a hit iitterv on the Tartars first TD drive, settled down and worked nobly to halt the Michigan squad. Billy Kuntz, Tim O'Banion. Lee Schluue, Bob Witman Joe Dowd and Tom Isenbarger were in on so many tackles it was hard to single out a top man.

Skowneski, the nation's leading rushing quarterback last year when he rolled up more than 1,000 yards, got rushes from 0 'B a i and Kuntz that had him frustrated. A touchdown with 2:30 left to play, engineered by some crafty signal calling on the part of Lynch, gave Butler its victory, the first in a season starter since 1965 when the Bulldogs managed a 41-6 decision over Taylor University.

In between Butler lost eight times in succession to Akron. FOR A MIllLi: it didn't look as though the Buldogs were going to break that first game hex as Wayne State took the kickoff and rolled 69 yards in 13 plays for the game's opening touchdown and a 7-0 lead before Butler ever laid hands on the ball for an offensive play. It was the versatile work of running quarterback Ed Skowneski that brought the Tartars their first score. Skowneski skirted right end on a 12-yard TD jaunt and Greg Guyon, who had a great afternoon booting the ball, kicked a perfect placement for the extra point. Enter Mr.

Lynch and the Michigan squad soon was nursing a king-sized headache. After the kickoff Lynch drove the Bulldogs 67 yards in nine plays for the equalizer. The payoff was a 28-yard aerial from Lynch to split and Dennis Leonard in the end zone for a TD and soccer-style kicker Bob Ligda clicked for the extra point in less than four minutes. Then early in the second period Butler took a Guyon punt on its own 38 and set sail on a second TD march of 62 yards. That one consumed just eight plays.

The Bulldogs drove to the 1-yard line, then got penalized 5 yards for delay of game. But that didn't bother Lynch, who calmly rifled a pass into the end zone which tight end Dave Swihart caught for the go-ahead TD. Ligda again converted and the Bulldogs had a 14-7 intermission lead. AFTER HIGH school bands from Jasper, Angola and Ron-calli joined the Butler Marching Bulldogs in a halftime show, the Butler gridders tried to get something started but fizzled. Harry Muta kicked to the Wavne State 27 but the Tartars Kansas Si.
