FAGE 4 Jiirv still out THE 1NDI W'APOLIS STAR SUNDAY. MAY 10. 1581 Cosworths vs. stock blocks jobs art going to be about eight to 10 mph slower than the best Cosworths. BIGELOW.

IN THE Genesee Beer Wagon Peaske-Chevy V-8. had the fastest one and four lap speeds of the two rocker arm jobs in the field He had a third lap of 188.719 mph and four laps at W8 294. Johnson, in the Menard Lightning-Chevy, had a second lap at 187 735 mph and four laps at 185 874 This sires up against A Foyt's hoi lap of 198 369 mph and four laps at 196 078 in his Valvoline-Gilmore Coyote-Cosworth. Other Cosworth drivers in the front row are Johnny Rutherford in the ChaparralX'osworth at 195.387 and Bill Alsup with the Penske-Cosworth at 193 134. with a few guys like Bobby I'nser.

Mario Andretti. Rick Mears and Gordon Johncock still to have a few words about the matter This wttuld give a rather clear indication that the Cosworth. with its four overhead cams, two per bank, four valves per cyl" and the ability to turn lO.Stxi rpm or maybe, ven a little better, is a pretty tough combination to beat. Even with only 161-cubic inches of displacement and 48 inches of mercury manifold pressure for its turbocharger. the better of these little V-8s punch out about 700 horsepower.

By contrast, the normally aspirated rocker arm Chevy V-8 is permitted 355-cubic inches of displacement, but due to some other limitations about 640 horses is the maximum being pumped out by stock block Some of the limitations include the fact that you can't turn the overhead valve engine as fast as you can the overhead cam powerplants. Something on the order of 7.S0O rpm is about the top speed for the Valve tram In addition. By GEORGE MOORE TV jury is still out. but basd upon Saturday's qualifications this year's 5flrt-Mile Raoe is going tr be a tviiered affair. In one segment is going to be the fastest Cosworth-powered ears and in the setond roup will be the leaders of the Chevrolet's or the so-called stock block contingent.

There is the possibility that one individual. Mike Mosley. may put a different fare on that picture, in that Mike ran 1 24? miles an hour during practice in Dan Curney's Pepsi Challenger Eagle-Chevy But due to the unfortunate weath-rf situation at the track. Mike still has to qualify Based upom the two fhcvys which are in the field, those of Tom Bigelow and Hyp Johnson, the better rocker arm Bill Alsup is welcomed in the pits by his wife. Andrea, after he earned a storting spot in the Indianapolis 500 Saturday afternoon.

Alsup qualified with a speed of 193.154 mph. (Star Photo) Alsup unlike dual overhead cams with four valves per cylinder, two intake and two exhaust which lie at an angle opposite each other, the in-line two-valve per-cylinder valve train doesn't lend itself to breathing as well as the four valve layout. "I'D SAY YOU WILL have a two. tiered race." Bigelow said, "but maybe you're never going to get away from that. The teams who are better financed are going to have better equipment than someone running on a low budget.

"I don't know how Mosley will do. but I think we'll be right up there. And we won't have that much of a disadvantage horsepower over the run of the mill Cosworths which are here. "Sure, someone like Penske or Patrick have Cosworths developing 700 horsepower. We're down maybe 60 horsepower there.

But others are going to be down maybe only about 20." Bigelow's Chevy, which was built up by chief mechanic Galen Fox and Willie Davis who joined the team about a month ago. carries a rating of 640. Some other rocker arm equipment around the Speedway isn't doing quite that well. And is expected that there will be a number of Cosworth-powered machines in the mid-185 bracket before, the 33-car starting field is completed. Tim Richmond in the UNO-Guarantee Peaske-Cosworth was the slowest of the Cosworth qualifiers at 185.309 mph.

The durability factor of the stock block still is an unknown quotient, but Bigelow says that they ran the practice engine some 300 miles with no problems. "They last in NASCAR," Tom said, "because they know how to keep them together. We may have some problems at first, but look at when the Cosworth first came here. "The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an American speedway and I think it's where we should run American engines. So why are we running one from England?" THE ANSWER, OF COURSE, is it the best thing available, but under next year's rules which call for, stock blocks only that will change.

The stock block rule also permits the use of a turbocharger with rocker arm engines, with the specifications dictating 209-cubic inches of displacement and 58 inches of boost. Bigelow thinks the turbo stock block has potential for more power, but prefers a Chevy V-8 version such as that being developed by Champion Spark Plug's Dick Jones rather than the V-6 concepts which have been entered this year. "I just think you get into harmonic problems at high rpms with a V-6," Tom said. "And actually I prefer a normally aspirated 355. I get instant throttle response while in traffic the turbos have a lag.

That may work to my advantage in the race." SA Mother Nature played some definite favorites at the Spwdway during Saturday's Pole Day qualifications. If lhe rainy weather had held for the entire day and pulled today, it would have worked against some of the Crams uhose past performance last week put them at the head 67 lhe speed class, and helped those who have the potential for going faster but need more time. Prime example of this was the Bignotti-Cottcr Team whose driver. Tom Sneva. was the first qualifier in line.

Sneva. in a Phoenix-Cosworth, took three laps which ranged from the 185 to 1R8 miles an hour bracket and was called off. Chief mechanic George Bignotti has been working with the Phoenix all week in an effort to get the machine to do the things he wanted it to do. At the same time, he had a new March in the garage which arrived late that Bignotti wanted to run. But he ran out of time to really get a chance to go completely through the car.

A DELAY WOllD have helped me a lot," said Bignotti "I would have had all week to run the car ithe March). Then we would have had carburetion day for our race setup. "You can do both at the same time. I've done it before." To the man sitting in Car No. 1.

however, the Pennzoij Chaparral, the parting of the overhead black stuff was somewhat akin to the parting of the Red Sea Johnny Rutherford was ready and he wanted to go. "You always like just a little more time." Rutherford said. But the pole is part of it here and I'd just rather get it over The most important thing is 500 miles and that's what we're really shooting for." Rutherford's car owner. Jim Hall, said. "We'd have taken it either way If we hadn't had a chance to qualify this weekend, we'd practice for qualification and do our race setup at the same time.

"IF WE HAD MORE time, we would look for more speed, because our competition looks pretty ready." While Hall was just as satisfied to get qualification over, a touch more speed would have helped. Rutherford's four-lap average of 195 387 mph wasn't fast enough to put him back in the spot he occupied at the start of last year's race the pole position The team which really may be hurt by the turn in the weather is the three-car stable of the Patrick Racing Team which has Mario Andretti, Gordon Johncock and Gordon Smiley handling the driving duties. The cars have been consistently fast all last week, but a major problem lies with Andretti. who has a commitment to run in the Belgian Grand Prix next weekend "In general, it won't hurt the team as much as it would Andretti if he doesn't get qualified tomorrow (Sunday)." said team owner U.E (Pati Patrick "It will hurt us with Mario not getting a chance at the pole and the way he's been going this will be a tremendous disappointment." AND THE TEAM that was going faster than anybody in practice. Penske Racing, never had a shot at getting Rick Mears on the track.

Mears. who had been clocked by some watches at 200 mph during Friday's session, was third from the end in the qualifying lineup, ahead of only Billy Engelhart and Bob lazier. If qualifications are out today, other competitors will have all week to play catch-up. "Obviously, the more time you give your competitors the more you lose," said Geoffrey Ferris, designer of Mears' Penske PC-9B "But that's one of those things you can't always control. The more important thing is you have time for the race." GEORGE MOORE "The car really felt pretty good." he said.

"I just kept telling myself to follow the game plan. But it felt so good the first two laps." Both those laps were in the' 194 bracket the fastest that Alsup ever has run at the Speedway. He slowed down the. final two circuits to 192 267 and 191 818. I rolled back on the third lap and; the fourth," he said, "just to be sure.

Acfiial-ly. I got out of it more on the fourth" lap than I had planned." EVEN WITH THE run complete with an unassailable speed, Alsup wasn't confident. "I didn't even think about it (finally licking the Speedway) until I got into the pit lane," he said. "I thought I could still goof it up on the cool down lap." Not hardly. And now for the first time in his three years at Indianapolis.

Alsup can enjoy the splendor of being an already-quallfed driver during the second week of practice, even if he doesn't hold ontohis current berth on the outside of the first row. There will be some pre-race timing to do on the No. 7 machine, but Alsup isn't looking for any of the 200-neighborhood laps that teammates Mears and Bobby Unser are running "I don't want iny more speed he said "That stuff's for Bobby and Rick It's just a matter now of setting the car up so I can run it flat to the wood without any drama. "I'm a firm believer in you've got to be around at the finish There is still the matter of the PC-7 that Alsup owns and drove here a year ago Fellow rookie Pete Halsmer is driving it He had an unfortunate meeting with the inside wall in Turn 4 earlier in the week and just got back on the track for the first time Saturday "I'll see if I can help them out i bit this week." he said But mostly he's going to spend a lot of time just walking around being "tickled I got the qualification through." Continued From Page 1 "We were unlucky," said Alsup Saturday. "We drew a real low number and when we went out the track was real green from all the rain.

You'll remember the guys going out later went faster. I knew when I came off the second turn on my first lap I was dead. I was down 200 rpm." Dead Alsup was. His 181 919 average was good only for the second alternate spot. So you can't blame the University of Colorado graduate for saying of the Speedway.

"I'm not a superstitous person, but I felt it was some kind of jinx for me." SATURDAY THE SPELL was broken. For this very moment, we're even." Earlier in the week, it didn't exactly feel that way. "For a couple days there. I was running as hard as I could and I couldn't get out of the 182-183 bracket. "It was just little things we didn't have the car in balance.

It just didn't feel good and I couldn't get across to the crew what it was. You hate to say problem because that has a bad connotation, but they weren't understanding what I was saying or I wasn't saying it right to them. "That happens when you're dealing with a new crew. You've got to learn what each other is saying Finally, teammate Rick Mears took lhe car out for a test run, found the same problems that Alsup had and was able to tell the crew what to do to correct the situation. SO WHEN THE 1979 Race winner came by to offer his congratulations, Alsup said, "I gotta thank you You're the one who gave me the confidence." Still, given how the Speedway has spent two years taking a bite out of his ego, Alsup was leary going out, going through and completing his qualifying run in what is easily the best piece of equipment he has ever driven.

NOW, ALL OF THESE alleged infractions have never been proven or even protested, but still have been the subjects of discussion among members of the immediate racing family. But, of course, few people would ever talk or write about any of these matters officially because, well, it was A.J. Foyt.

In the eyes of many people he could do whatever he wanted to do because he was sacred. There is a joke that goes, "A guy was in heaven and he saw an orange race car being driven around and he said, 'Is that A Foyt" he was told, 'that's God, he just thinks he's A J. It's funny Unfortunately, it's true The point is this Foyt will go down in history as one of the fastest and greatest race drivers. Some people dismiss Foyt's actions with the excuse that he is an intense, fierce competitor, and a winner." That may be true, and he may have everything anyone in racing could ever want- except, of course, maturity. "500" field for the first time in 1980.

"My crew, headed by Bobby Hatch, is as good or better than any of the crews on the team. Mr. Patrick has been super to me. What matters most now is that Mario and Gordon do as well or better than I did in qualifying." Smiley is not looking at himself as an also-ran in the race. "I'm going to be a factor, I'm going to be there at the end," he asserts.

"I plan to stay in touch with the leaders, to be close enough to them to see what they are doing and then move up near the finish I want to stay on the same lap as the people running up front." Smiley said he "didn't know what to expect" when he moved into the Cos-worth powered Wildcat chassis at the beginning of the week but he was quick to discover "it was easy to drive." SATURDAY'S qualifying run was termed "a real good one," by Smiley, who added. "We had some problems in the morning with the turbo but in the afternoon all I had to do was put my foot to the floor." Smiley would like to sit down in front of a computer one of these days and write about his experiences. "I don't want to author a day-by-day journal but rather some kind of an inside piece on the people and happenings."
