PAGE IV THURSDAY. MAY 7, 1981 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR A Brabham returns to race at Speedway and a professional racer for six years, he is already planning to run a "good, reliable race," and to be running at the finish. He doesn't think there is as much pressure here on him than there is ui Europe because second generation drivers there are rare. "Here, they are an -everyday occurrence." He's never seen the race and he may be too busy come May 24, but he knows what he's after. "I hope to have one of the best seats in the race." he grinned.

And that, of course, is as a competitor in the world's richest race. ates one of Mexico's foremost banks "indy is one of the most important and most prestigious races," said young Brabham. Formula One is my main ambition, but I always wanted to come to Indy." BOTH ROOKIES AND their car owner had high praise for the special practice period set aside for rookies last month. It was the best thing that could have happened," said Brabham. "It allowed us to do what we had to do, at our own pace.

Rookies are under a lot of pressure, anyway. It's hard to get through the rookie test" Psachie called the April practice "one of the finest things we've been exposed to. It was a good program for everybody concerned." Garza is still in awe of the famous racing plant. "This is the top of the world as far as motor racing goes. It's racing's biggest single event.

Just think, this is where Johnny Rutherford. A.J. Foyt and the L'nsers have made their big successes." The dashing Garza admitted to getting butterflies the first time he went on the track. Thinking about qualifications leaves him with the same feeling. Through the first few days of practice, the two rookies clocked speeds the low and mid -180s.

"I WILL RELAX when I know we can run consistently above 186." said Psachie. "I came here figuring I had to beat 45 cars to get into the race. In other races I figured up how many cars I had to beat to get the pole. If we make the race, I think it will be a fantastic accomplishment." Brabham, who won the Super Vee title driving for Psachie two years ago, hopes to qualify at a speed of about 190. A former Formula Three driver in Europe By KURT FREUDENT1UL Twenty years ago.

Jack Brabham made modern Speedway history, driving a rear-engine car to ninth place in the Indianapolis 500. Jack Brabham set a trend in 1961 and the rear-end contingent grew and grew until, a few years later, you hardly saw a roadster near the famous oval. Three times Brabham was world Grand Prix Formula One champion. Then he chucked it all for farming in his native Australia. The Brabham race cars are still prominent, however, and now son, Geoff, hopes to follow in his father's footsteps and qualify for his first 500 Saturday.

So does Josele Garza of Mexico City. The two are colleagues on a potentially hot new team at Indy, Psachie Garza Racing out of Anaheim, Calif. They have a lot in common. Both are foreign born. Indy rookies; and both became the fir.

a flock of newcomers to pass their drivers' tests on the first possible day last Saturday. DAVID PSACHIE, A California! who has been in racing since he was 16, is the mastermind behind this new operation, admittedly an expensive one. After running midgets for some years and then Super Vees with Garza and Brabham, he felt it was time for a change. "My main goal has been to own a car at Indy." said Psachie Wednesday while waiting for the track to dry so his chauffeurs could get in some more prac tice runs. "About a year ago, Josele and I made a decision to go with a three-year racing program.

We started out with Super Vees and this is our second year. Hopefully, in our third year we'll build our own car and bring it They decided to go first class. They acquired four Peruke-Cos worths from Roger himself. Geoff and Josele drive PC9s driven in last year's race by Rick Mears and Mario Andretti. Both led the race and Mears, who apparently had second place clinched, had to settle for fifth because of an unscheduled pit stop late in the chase.

Their third car, a PC7, was still without driver late Wednesday but that could well change today. "WE INTEND TO qualify and race three cars," said Psachie, who owns Martin Aviation in California. Jack Brabham watched his son pass his rookie test with flying colors but stayed very much in the background, "lie believes you can help someone only so much. He left it up to me to find out for myself about racing. Then, if I had any questions, I can come to him," explained Geoff.

"Just knowing he is there gives me a lot of confidence. He has suggested a few things (driving techniques and adjustments to the car). I know he's in my background and that's the biggest help to me." Both rookies have aimed for Indy for a number of years. ONCE AGAIN THIS year, the Speedway is opening Gate 10 on practice days to accommodate fans trying to make a speedy entrance into the track. Unfortunately, nobody is taking advantage of the extra entrance and the annual traffic jams on 16th Street at the Gate 3 entrance are as bad as ever. Speedway officials are urging even begging fans to consider coming in 30th Street through Gate 10. Currently, next to nobody uses the north entrance and it's a breeze to como in that way. Besides having Huey Absalom (he wrenched Al's third Indy win in 1978) mothering the mechanics of the Sergio Valente Jeans Team, they've also had the vast knowledge of Patrick Head at their side the past few days. Head, who designed the Williams' chassis that captured the Formula One title last year, is in his second year of association with Hillin and Indy cars and has spent a lot of time recently helping out the U.S.

effort. This season, despite the fact Carlos Rcutemann is atop the Grand Prix standings in a Williams, has been one of total confusion in the world's premier road racing circuit There has been constant feuding between FOCA Formula One Constructors Association) and FISA (Federation International du Auto Sport) over rules. The power struggle is similar to the one here between USAC and CART. Head was asked to make a comparison of the two famous forms of open-wheeled racing and if there was any parallel to their problems. "I'd just say the bureaucrats in this country are as ignorant as the ones in Europe," he replied.

STEVE CHASSEY continues to be plagued by engine troubles in his initial try at the Speedway. The USAC frontrunner from Brownsburg was foiled again Wednesday in his attempt to complete the final phase of his rookie test. Chass only made one lap before the Chevrolet engine in his Jet Engineering Eagle gave out. It was the third engine failure this week and a new powerplant wont be ready until Friday at the earliest and he's still got 17 laps over 170 miles an hour to complete. Dave Psachie, who owns the cars driven by rookies Geoff Brabham and Josele Garza, offered Chassey one of his cars to finish the test if it was okay with either one of his boys.

THE INDIANAPOLIS Speedrome's regional USAC midget series opens tonight and promoter John Stiles has landed Fleenor Auto Stores to sponsor the 16-race circuit. Under the special rules, each competitor is required to run the same right rear tire and the ranking drivers will always start at the rear of the field. There will be a 25-lap feature arid a 50-lap A main each evening in the 170,000 series. Former champs Mel Kenyon and Sleepy Tripp will be competing, in addi- mm 60 'Carter Price w'i rebate MOST S. CARS LENGTH 5 16th Street. BOB HARKEY SAYS he may be the first driver in Speedway history whose turn speeds are higher than his straightaway speeds. It's not quite that bad with the No. 86 Roman WheelsCargo Master Antares-Offy, but pretty close. "They clocked me at 176 miles an hour down the straight with the radar gun," laughed the 51-year-old veteran of six 500-Mile Races, "and I had a 176 average for the lap." Needless to say, Harkey was not on the track Wednesday while his crew did some extensive clean-up work on the engine.

VETERAN DRIVER Tom Sneva teamed up with the American Legion Wednesday in an effort to raise money during the "500" for a national monument to veterans of the Vietnam War. Sneva and Legion officials announced the veterans' group will seek pledges before and during the race tied to the number of laps the Spokane (Wash.) driver completes. "I felt it was important to do something to help," Sneva told a news conference in a Speedway garage. "We hope to be around all 200 laps so we hope to raise a lot of money," Sneva said. Legion officials said anyone wishing to contribute to a Vietnam Veterans monument at Washington should send a pledge to the American Legions' national head-quaters in Indianapolis.

They said once Sneva's car has qualified, they will announce a national toll-free number to which pledges may be called. umiMi 111 mm 19.95 WAMANTY HIP 5- SOLIDMHVLSIDJNG i ca Qf- fl3EDB rrii -Has, -r tt si ci Let CARTER Light Up Your Home with DIAMOND F.
