Uhalt dropped from .360, the leading mark of last week, to .349, but managed to get on base enough to do some good running as he stole seven bags and scored nine runs. So Uhalt is today right in the running for base theft honors with 23. Mailho leads with 26, and Anton is right behind with 25. "Cookifc" Lavagetto was the timeliest hitter of the Oaks at Portland as he drove in 11 runs.

Anton and Pool are the only teammates who have driven in more runs and they were in many more games than the youthful second sacker. Earl Sheely had a great week with the bat for the Ducks and collected 14 hits to drive in as many runs. Season batting averages for the Oaks, and the composite box score of the Oak-Duck series follows: straight victory and win their second straight Maxwell Summer League championship, 16 to 14, over the Redwood Tavern. To maintain their unbroken string of victories in league competition, the Merchants relied upon the heavy hitting of Medaglia, Ambrose and Charves, Medaglia getting four for five, and the others three hits each. For the losers, Dolan, Kulik and Bona, the latter with a home run and three bagger, were hitting stars.

With a SINCE the famous hot July day in 1776 when an old man climbed into the bell tower and rang the Liberty Bell to announce to the world that a new government that of the United States had been born, nearly half a score of other nations throughout the world have found that July was the month that marked their fate, or held their destiny.

Just 13 years later a mob on the streets of Paris stormed the Bastile and destroyed it and with it they destroyed the old government of France. July 14 is still a national holiday in France. In 1830 the fate of another French government was sealed in the famous July Revolution. The Bourbons were overthrown; Charles a few days later abdicated. This same July Revolution of 1830 started a chain of important events in Belgium's national history that culminated a year later the following July 1 in Leopold I ascending to the throne of a Belgium, free from Holland.

July has always been a popular month for declarations of independence in South America Venezuela in 1811, Peru in 1821, Argentina in 1816, Haiti's independence was declared in July, 1801, by Toussaint. The battle of Santiago, in 1898, was an important July event in Cuban independence. Canada became a Dominion on July 1, In 1867 when Lord Monck was sworn in as the first governor-general of Canada. July 1 is widely celebrated there as "Dominion Day."
