SUNDAY, JULY 20, 1986- -THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR VE i. A years. Brooks also has portrayed the black activist martyr, Malcolm in the musical, in a performance theater critic Alan Rich called played Paul Robeson in Eric Bentley's Broadway show. Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been; performed in the New York Shakespeare Festival, and has recently completed filming for television's Showtime production of Uncle Tom's Cabin. These are but a few of his acting credits; he also has directed productions and written "theatrical happenings" and essays.

"The relief of oppression in the world those are the kinds of things I want to talk about," Brooks said about his choice of projects. "So it doesn't matter if it's Malcolm or somebody you've never heard of. "The critical thing is that we are fostering, or telling the stories, of the folk. The great battles and the little battles all of issues. Brooks wants to present "human concerns." "We need to take care of humanity," he said.

"There are a myriad of avenues we (blacks) need to address, obviously some political, some economic. But the bottom line is we are either going to take care of and be concerned about humanity or we are not "I think that every people on the earth have a responsiblity to do that for themselves as well as for the general population. "I can't think of any people In modern history who have not done that. It's critical, if you're looking to the future, for your children and your children's children, to pass on and preserve the things that you think are valuable. "And if you don't do that, not only will there be no record, but your children will not even know who they are.

"That's why I began." Continued From Page 1 administrative assistant in the AfrprAmerican studies program there far, two years. From there, he went to Rutgers University. "The idea was rhaM was going to do a year in residence (with the theater company), it turned out that I was the only one who went I was teaching in the art and mu- sic department. "I got my B.A. in one year, -and I -was in the first graduating class- to- receive an MFA from he said, his bass-baritone voice again revealing his' pride.

Since then. Brooks has regained at Rutgers, where he now is an associate professor of theaterrts. He is on leave of absertce while filming for Spen- ser: For Hire continues, but clearly academia Is an important part of his life. "The principal reason for my presence in the academic arena in thjj first place was so that I could Have the kind of freedom that I could not gain in the commercial market place the kinds of things that you could been easy. At times, it even has been disillusioning.

"Obviously, art does not have an integral place in the country, at least certain kinds of art. The disillusionment that I spoke about Is that, in my mind at least, we have to find a place for this kind of expression. Obviously, theater Is in dire straights "I think the other thing to consider and I knew this early on but it was corroborated the older I got was that being a black person in America, there are certain realities that you have to come to grips with early on no matter what your profession. "And certainly by the time that I'd come East I'd not given myself any unrealistic expectations about either being black or being involved In theater, because obviously there are very limited opportunities there." Thus, though Spenser has been an opportunity for broader popular recognition, it hardly is for Brooks what some people try in the classroom and experiment with without having to worry about the exigencies of money And though teaching Is a focal point, a source of stability in his life. Brooks quickly added, "I didn't aspire to be a teacher, but there were things I wanted to do in theater which nobody else seemed to be doing at least in the place where I was.

So I started to exchange information by default. I was doing a lot of experimental, non-traditional things." Furthermore, Brooks who readily eshewed labels and titles made It clear that he did not aspire to be an actor, either. "I'm not an actor. I'm a theater artist, if anything. never aspired to be an "actor," even though I've studied acting and I've even taught it." Nonetheless, as he said in a past interview.

"In the l360s, I began to understand that acting could be a way of celebrating my culture, of telling stories that needed to be told."
