JULY it, 1983 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- Two Hoosier women excel in 'sombo' wrestlings V--" v-O AvO fSfff ylrV o-v Jf'rsV techniques she learned at the Sports Festival prior to the world championships. In addition to training- at Olympic West, she will continue her judo practice, lift weights and ride her bicycle. "I'm so fired up now," Carter says. "Now that I've been out there, I feel more confident and that's important if I'm going to do well ft ELDORA SPEEDWAY ROSSBURG, OHIO Carter Johnson Roethke Brinley ers and that is another big difference." Proof of that, of course, is the results. Because of their Festival performances, Roethke and Carter each earned the opportunity to compete in the Women's World Sombo Championships in October at Madrid, Spain.

PREVIOUSLY, ROETHKE and Turk, who had to withdraw from the Festival sombo because of injury, qualified to travel to next month's Pan Am Games at Caracas, Venezuela. As the nation's top ranked woman in judo and sombo, Roethke will be devoting her time exclusively to training and competition for both sports. "I'm on a schedule constantly," Roethke says. "I run, practice judo, work out nearly every day. I consider my job at UPS (United Parcel Service) as part of my training because I lift 50 pound boxes while I'm there." Carter plans to learn everything she can about sombo and perfect the "You must be aggressive as with any contact sport.

You're constantly moving." Roethke, 22, first learned of sombo in February from her coaches, Lowell Johnson and Donna Turk of Olympic West, who also took part in the Sports Festival. Johnson guided the women's sombo competitors and Turk, who participated in that competition, served as a women's judo coach. "I thought sombo sounded terrific," Roethke says. "There are less rules and it's a little more free than judo. I thought I'd have a good chance at winning." A third-degree black belt in judo.

Roethke also won a gold medal in the Festival judo competition, marking her as the nation's top-ranked woman in the 134 pound class. Carter, meanwhile, never had seen sombo prior to the Sports Festival. "This sport was totally new to me," she says. "I thought I'd just go out there and see what I could do. probably not win anything," she Although the name sombo may conjure up visions of a fast two-step 'in most people's minds, there are at least two Indiana women who can fattest that sombo requires more than fa deft turn of the ankle.

Lynn Roethke of Indianapolis and Anderson native Laura Carter in sombo in the recent National Sports Festival at Colorado Springs, and each brought I home gold medals in her respective tweight division. t' A new sport in this year's Pan i American Games and therefore addled to the Sports Festival lineup, sombo originated in Russia during i the reign of Joseph Stalin and is a of freestyle wrestling and judo. I- Stalin trained his bodyguards in hand to hand combat technique for crowd-control purposes and the name, sombo, comes from the Rus- sian language meaning self defense i without weapons. Roethke, Carter and seven others from the Olympic West Judo Kara- te School in Indianapolis were to compete at the Sports Festival because of their experience in judo. IN ADDITION to wrestling and judo techniques, sombo requires the stamina to withstand pain and certain aggressive tendencies.

"You have to be crazy to do this sport because most people don't like much pain," says Carter, 19. a visual communications major at Ball State. "And you've got to have a killer instinct to do this. Until now. I didn't think I had that much of it." Adds Wisconsin native Roethke, SAT.

In fact, Roethke defeated silver-medal-winning teammate Cyndi Brinley for the 132 pound title and Carter beat bronze-medal-winning teammate Cindy Curtis in the light heavyweight class.

Sandy Clark also copped a second place award at 165 pounds, while Joyce Berry, 154 pounds, and Kent Fortner, men's 105 pounds, took third-place honors. Diane Dysert. also at 154 pounds, finished fourth. "The girls we took generally were stronger, had more endurance and were more aggressive than others (from around the country)," Johnson says to describe his athletes' success.
