SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1983 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- SD Rutherford! gets boot after Fabi gets pole The ttaDEc IF tifoe Hown iis EDOW ftlhe Tosasft off tiEne Town DAVE OVERPECK, Star Sportswriter Monterey, Calif. It was another one of those days in one of those years for the Patrick Racing Team Saturday. While Chip Ganassi was taking part in the front row interview for today's Cribari Wines 300-kilometer event at Laguna Seca Raceway, Mike Knight, CART's communications chief, broke in to announce that Ganassi's teammate had been disqualified. During the post-qualifying technical inspection, CART officials found that the popoff valve on Johnny Rutherford's Sea Ray Boats Wildcat IX had been taped over. That interfere with the valve's ability to limit turbocharger pressure to 48 inches.

As a result, all of Rutherford's qualifying laps, not only on Saturday but also on Friday, were thrown out. RUTHERFORD COULD have been added to the rear of the field under the promoter's option. It was offered, but crew chief Jim McGee declined. So J.R will be on the sidelines today. Shortly after that announcement, CART's timing and scoring folks added insult to the Patrick team's injury.

Ganassi's STP Wildcat IX wouldn't be starting in the front row after all. His 118.746 lap was third quick for the weekend, not second. Seems that the by-guess and by-golly folks missed Derek Daly's 119.048 run in the Provimi Veal March the first time they went through the day's speeds. So it will be the Irishman who'll line up beside Teo Fabi's Skoal Bandit March when they grid the 27-car field for today's 99-lap chase over Laguna's 1.9 mile, nine-turn roller coaster. Daly's effort was the closest that anybody could come to Fabi's 120.169 lap Friday.

Teo wasn't close. "Early in the session we had problems with the car," he said. "We made some changes and they weren't the right ones. We put it back the way it was but then we had problems with traffic and couldn't get a clean lap." Despite being quickest Saturday, Daly isn't looking for any winner's laurels today. have a fairly serious gearbox problem," he said.

"It jumps out of second and third gear. It jumps out on all-the third gear turns. really an oval track gearbox -we've only got four gears instead of five that most of the others have. And it's got some end-of the-season blues. WETtE JUST NOT ready to win.

We've had it too lfWg to expect to make it a road racing box at this point. On my fast lap, it came out of gear in Turn 8. En: tering it I was just hoping to stay on the course." That means that Daly isn't going to be in much position to challenge Fabi in the dash for the first turn. And that could that could be decisive on this tight, up-' and downhill course where passing is expected to be very difficult "Whomever can stay out front and hang onto the lead finishes that way," said Fabi. "Strategy doesn't play a part in this race.

I think it's going to be a sprint race. "Traffic is going to be a problem and it's going to be important to stay up front" Though he got bumped from the first row to the second, Ganassi was a happy young man after his third straight strong performance. He joined the 200 miles an hour club in qualifying at Michigan last month and ran a strong third his best finish in two seasons at Las Vegas two weeks "Good machinery makes it better," he said of the new Wildcat IX B. "We're starting to turn things around. I'm not the only thing that's come up to speed.

-The whole team has. "I'm really proud of the team here. We've come in with no testing here at all where most of the rest have. In fact the first testing this car has had was a little bit at Phoenix last week. And I've never been here before." Joining Ganassi in the second row today will be Bobby Rahal in Red Roof Inns Chevy-powered March with a lap Saturday at 118.647.

But he may need an engine change. "I THINK I MAY have hurt it right at the end," he said. "I missed a shift and over-revved it. It didn't seem quite as peppy after that" His crew has another powerplant available, but this one was supposed to be the race engine. Today's third row has John Paul Jr.

at 118.554 in the VDS Penske PC 10 and Mario Andretti at 117.866 in the Budweiser Lola. Both times were recorded Friday. The fourth row has Geoff Brabham at 117.544 in the Kraco March and Kevin Cogan at 116.847 in the Master MechanicCaesars Palace March. Both times came Saturday. Rounding out the top 10 are Al Unser who can wrap up the CART championship with a fifth-place finish today, at 116.811 in the Hertz Penske PC-10B and Michael Andretti at 116.309 in the other Kraco March.

The three drivers added to the field on the promo-tors option were all rookies Jeff Wood in the Landmark Oil Eagle, Jorge Koechlin in the Vermont American Eagle and Randy Lewis in the Sequentia-1AGFA Watson. Ironically, Koechlin, a Peruvian who is racing out of London, is in the show and his boss isn't He was the 26th quickest qualifier while Dick Simon wound up 28th. i VJm mi. tt You've never seen basketball in a black tie and tails.
