The magic word is "Gatorade," an unlikely name for an unlikely soft-drink developed four years ago with no thought of ever ending up on a grocery shelf. Now after grabbing the attention of the national press and reaping the benefits of whispering testimonials, Stokely has something close to a marketing dream. Gatorade was developed by doctors for athletes.

The possibilities are astounding with the indorsements for cereals, toothpaste and razor blades about to look pale beside what is planned for Gatorade. New York agency Hill and Knowlton's first big pitch for the product here was unwrapped this week: "What does Jerry Orbach, star of the hit play 'Scuba have in common with the astronauts, the United States Davis Cup team, football star Jerry Kramer, decathlon champion Russ Hodge, Washington Senator slugger Frank Howard and world's champion cowboy Larry Mahan?" The answer is as simple as you suspected: "He's a convert to Gatorade, like all the others." Although sports columnist Red Smith has nicknamed it "rattle belly." Hill and Knowlton points out that Gatorade is "not an alligator stimulant." It describes it as a "non-c a a te lemon-lime-flavored beverage that has athletic trainers all over the nation driving their charges to drink." The American public by this time, may be cautious about such wild testimonials, but amazingly all the razzle dazzle about Gatorade didn't take much to "invent." The product itself, in wide use only a little more than one season, is considered somewhat of a "breakthrough" in the thirsty world of sports. Athletes traditionally have been discouraged from drinking anything, including water, during competition. Liquids aren't generally absorbed fast enough and only slosh around. So at best they got a sip.

If disciplined, only a mouthwash. Naturally thirst always has been a problem. A young kidney specialist named Dr. Robert Cade of the University of Florida Medical School began research in about 1964 to try to solve the problem, especially aggravated in such hot, dry climates as Florida. He and other researchers the drink was worked on by members of the Indiana University School of Medicine came up with a water-base solution which included glucose and salts.

The lemon-lime was thrown in for flavor. The combination, not quite simple as it sounds, was df-signed for quick body absorption, or about 12 times as fast as plain water would be absorbed by the body. Practically speaking, it's absorbed almost as fast as it is consumed. In 1965, the liquid was tried out on the freshman it-am at the University of I lorida. It worked so well that the varsity was using it in 1966 and U.

of F. competitors were itching to get some of the stuff themselves. To the traditionally non-drinking world of sports competition, it was big news that lorida back Larry Smith swilled a gallon and a half of the stuff during an Orange Uowl game. Already nick-named Gator-iide, Florida's bottled "water" got so hot that they couldn't meet the demand. As a result.

I i a a I i s-baserl Siokely-Van Camp jumped at the opportunity two yNiri ago to sell it on the athletic market. stukely's, unlike most of the other giants in the food business, has not brought out any new products in the five years after a reorganization ia 1961. It now has some 260 pro-tiuts and the outlook for Gatorade may rival the status of the famous Van Camp bean.
